Our History In June 2004, the Knights of Columbus conferred the Charter establishing Council at Christ Our Redeemer Parish. On July 1, 2004, our first Grand Knight, Len Casey, convened the Council s inaugural meeting and fraternal year. The Council earned the Star Award that year and Double Star Awards each of the next five years. In , under the leadership of Past Grand Knight, Jack Starr, earned the Best Florida Council (Division II) distinction. In 2009, Sir Knight Dave Halupowski was honored as the State of Florida Knight of the Year.

2 From the Grand Knight s Desk Brothers, As you may know, I m on an extended trip and am enjoying the opportunity to visit different churches for Mass on Sunday. One Sunday, I attended The Church of St John s in Stroudsburg, PA. The celebrant, Fr. Gregory, has been a priest for 10 years and he addressed the recent abuse scandal in a very personal way. Two of the priests on the offenders list had been mentors to him in the seminary and afterward. Now he learned the dark side of people he formally held in high esteem. He further expressed sorrow and anger that Bishops covered up the offenses and allowed so many individuals to continue their sinful ways. He then related this incident to the Gospel of that day in which many disciples left Jesus when he said you must eat my flesh and drink my blood, because that teaching was too hard. When Jesus asked his Apostles if they too would leave, Peter said, where should we go, you have the words of eternal life. Fr. Gregory then said he hoped people wouldn t leave the Church over these current troubles because where can we go- and expressed that his faith in God s Word and Jesus presence in the Eucharist is not shaken. I couldn t help relating his words to us in the Knights of Columbus. Our hallmark is support for our clergy and it is disconcerting that many Bishops were so misguided in carrying out their duties to the Church. However, that doesn t prevent us from doing the right thing by continuing our charitable and faith works and supporting our pastor. The Diocese and the KofC have strict Safe Environment procedures which have been in effect many years and are very effective in protecting our children. The Church has seen trying times often in its history. Back in the 13th century, Christ told St. Francis to repair my Church. Our Supreme Knight addressed the current issue in a letter to Chaplains in which he makes some suggestions on how to proceed and announces KofC initiatives like a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ. Here s a link to his letter: I encourage all our brothers to support our council activities and continue to put our Faith in Action. Vivat Jesus! Bob Gualtieri 2

Sal Pignato celebrate the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy (entire service is sung, Eucharist in both species) that morning. iv) Make sure you're using the new Faith in Action program guide. Columbian Award application is being rewritten to reflect changes. New required projects in order to meet goals. This new program was created to appeal to younger members and refocus the knights to work closer with the parish, something most councils have been struggling with. v) Now is a great time to recruit. Military members moving into area all the time. Please schedule at least two recruiting drives by end of December. State goal is for every council to recruit one member this year. vi) Youth activities: need to plan dates for soccer challenge prior to District and Regional. September preferable for council level competition. vii) Did you know that the Diocese of Orlando is also responsible for the Moon, since the space craft that Neil Armstrong got to it from launched from Cape Canaveral? viii) There was a Daily News article about a group of priests saying the Latin Mass in Destin on Wednesday nights. FYI: The group of priests is not sanctioned by the Vatican, according to the State Chaplain. ix) Thanks! 6 Knight of the Month Joey Cartenuto. We are pleased to designate Brother Joey Cartenuto as Knight of the Month for Aug Brother (SK) Joe is a 4th Degree Knight and has been a member for 25 years. We can always count on Brother Joe to attend our meetings and offer suggestions and work to keep our council up with the current times. He is a chef and volunteers his talent for special council events. He prepared dinner for 30 members and guests for dinner after the Installation of new officers for the 2018/19 Fraternal Year. Not only is his cuisine delicious, but also holding the meal in the parish hall makes it much more convenient for the members and enables more members to attend. For his dedication to the council and Knights of Columbus, Brother Joe certainly deserves the award of Knight of the Month. Family of the Month Deacon Tom Dwyer and Bernadette. We are pleased to recognize the significant contributions of Deacon Tom and Bernadette Dwyer as Family of the Month for August Deacon Tom and Bernadette have only been in our council a year but have made quite an impact in that short time. Although members of Christ our Redeemer Parish, Deacon Tom is assigned to Holy Name of Jesus for Deacon duties and Bernadette supports him in that critical vocation. In addition to weekend liturgies at Holy Name, he assists with the other deacons in conducting Tuesday Communion Services and an hour of Adoration afterwards. He also conducts Baptism sacramental prep for new parents. Additionally, at the request of the Pastor, Fr. Steve, he is developing a parish marriage mentoring program for engaged couples, which is in the beginning stages. Despite the busy schedule as Deacon, Tom and Bernadette find the time to contribute to our council s activities. Tom participated in a Habitat For Humanity build as well as a couple of parish pancake breakfasts and they also help out with weekly Bingo which is an important fundraiser and popular community activity. Bernadette further supports our parish as a Eucharistic Minister. Tom and Bernadette often attend Daily Mass together at Christ Our Redeemer. For their contributions to the council, the Church and for serving as a model for Catholic family values, Deacon Tom and Bernadette certainly deserve the award of Family of the Month! 6

9 Saint of the Month September 2018 St. Teresa of Calcutta, ( ). Feast Day: September 5 th Patron Saint: World Youth Day. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the tiny woman recognized throughout the world for her work among the poorest of the poor, was beatified October 19, Among those present were hundreds of Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in 1950, as a diocesan religious community. Today the congregation also includes contemplative sisters and brothers and an order of priests. Born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia, Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived. For a time, the family lived comfortably, and her father s construction business thrived. But life changed overnight following his unexpected death. During her years in public school, Agnes participated in a Catholic sodality and showed a strong interest in the foreign missions. At age 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. It was 1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final time and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. There she chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was assigned to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her the poverty, the suffering, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people. In 1946, while riding a train to Darjeeling to make a retreat, Sister Teresa heard what she later explained as a call within a call. The message was clear. I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. She also heard a call to give up her life with the Sisters of Loreto and instead, to follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor. After receiving permission to leave Loreto, establish a new religious community, and undertake her new work, Sister Teresa took a nursing course for several months. She returned to Calcutta, where she lived in the slums and opened a school for poor children. Dressed in a white sari and sandals the ordinary dress of an Indian woman she soon began getting to know her neighbors especially the poor and sick and getting to know their needs through visits. The work was exhausting, but she was not alone for long. Volunteers who came to join her in the work, some of them former students, became the core of the Missionaries of Charity. Others helped by donating food, clothing, supplies, and the use of buildings. In 1952, the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former hostel, which became a home for the dying and the destitute. As the order expanded, services were also offered to orphans, abandoned children, alcoholics, the aging, and street people. For the next four decades, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor. Her love knew no bounds. Nor did her energy, as she crisscrossed the globe pleading for support and inviting others to see the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 5, 1997, God called her home. Blessed Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4,

10 Reflection Mother Teresa s beatification, just over six years after her death, was part of an expedited process put into effect by Pope John Paul II. Like so many others around the world, he found her love for the Eucharist, for prayer, and for the poor a model for all to emulate.
