Both meetings are conducted in the Christ Our Redeemer Parish Hall at 7:00 PM. Fourth Degree members of Council and Council 7667 comprise Assembly The Fourth Degree Assembly convenes on the third Thursday of each month, alternating meeting locations between Christ our Redeemer Parish (even months) and Holy Name of Jesus Parish (odd months). Our History In June 2004, the Knights of Columbus conferred the Charter establishing Council at Christ Our Redeemer Parish. On July 1, 2004, our first Grand Knight, Len Casey, convened the Council s inaugural meeting and fraternal year. The Council earned the Star Award that year and Double Star Awards each of the next five years. In , under the leadership of Past Grand Knight, Jack Starr, earned the Best Florida Council (Division II) distinction. In 2009, Sir Knight Dave Halupowski was honored as the State of Florida Knight of the Year. 1

2 From the Grand Knight s Desk My Brothers, we re entering the final stretch of the Fraternal Year, and in Council fashion we are gaining momentum! Throughout the year we have focused on the imminent milestone that is our Council s Tenth Anniversary A Decade of Service. For those who were here at the outset, thank you for laying the foundation of our current success. For those who joined the mission along the way, thank you for the gifts of time, talent, and energy that propelled us to high achievement. And for those who only recently joined our ranks, thank you for bringing new energy and ideas to this Council s ministry of service. This is not our finish line; rather, our jumping-off point. The best of Council still lies ahead of us! In a few days, Suzie and I and Chris and Vince Warsheski will join our District Deputy, Joe Purka, and his wife, Dee, and all the other delegates from Northwest Florida at the Florida State Convention in Orlando. We will proudly represent our Council and District there, knowing that we bring with us the vitality and good works of you all. During our Council s relatively short history, we ve distinguished ourselves through service within an international organization filled with faithful and dedicated servants. We carry this knowledge not as a banner of pride but as message of hope and encouragement to our Brothers throughout Florida. We serve with them as they do with us, and together we help to make this State, our Country, and the world a better place for all. Vivat Jesu! Rod Culkin General Assembly Meeting Minutes May 1, 2014 Meeting opened with a prayer led by our Worthy Grand Knight. Roll Call: All officers present or excused. Excused officers included: Chaplain, Inside Guard, Trustee 3rd year. Visiting Officer: Fraternal Insurance Agent, Timothy Pugh The Grand Knight recited the Opening Ode of the Knights of Columbus. 1. Minutes: Minutes for April were approved as amended. 2. Applications for Membership: Admissions committee: One new member application. Warren Kerrigan. 3. Grand Knight s Report: - Happy Easter! - Council 7667 at Holy Name of Jesus hosting 2nd and 3rd degree not yet rescheduled. - Deep Sea Fishing from Destin harbor this Saturday - Next weekend, Habitat For Humanity, Pasta Dinner, and Mother's Day - Membership drive the following weekend - Florida State Convention in Orlando on Memorial Day weekend - On Sunday, June 1, Tenth Anniversary Gala at Rocky Bayou Country Club on agenda - Nomination of officers for next Fraternal Year later during this meeting under New Business 2

Bob s appreciation for making the Divine Mercy Sunday a celebration and for supporting the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This past Sunday also marked the canonization of Saints John Paul II and John XXIII. 5. Treasurer's Report: John Wohleber reported that we have $15, in our accounts - General Fund: $10, Scholarship Fund: $4, Financial Secretary s Report: Lenny Smales reported that we made payments for RSVP, State Convention stipend, and Financial Secretary compensation budgeted items. 7. Service Program Directors' Reports: - Membership: None - Council: Director Charles Tobia: - Saturday Fishing trip weather looks great at 7:00 to 7:30 am for 8 hours cost $ year anniversary date Sunday June 1st at Rocky Bayou Country Club at 6:00 PM. Sirloin Steak, Chicken Scaloppini, grilled grouper. Tickets cost $27.00 each. Music to be provided. - Community: Director Andy Balding - Habitat for Humanity in Crestview. Anticipate framing of windows and doors, on May 10th at same house 8:45 a.m. for help 9:00AM to 1:00 PM. - Vocations: No report. - Family: Directorship is vacant. No report. - Youth: Director Kevin Kenebl - Scholarships: Have received 12 applications. Will have a report next month on who received the 4 scholarships. - Church: Director Ron Rabiansky excused: Mark Adams reported. - Ron thanks everyone for the best Corporate Communion turnout to date on Divine Mercy Sunday. - Thanks also for support of Lenten Soup night and all the contributions during Holy Week including parking directors. - Next Corporate Communion on June 8 currently scheduled for the 7:30 AM Mass. - Culture of Life: Director Dave Halupowski Days for Life campaign was successful. - Dave distributed pro-life lapel pins to all who participated. - Publicity: Director excused. No report. 8. Fourth Degree: 3 New honorary life time members including Council Brothers, Ed Ehring, and Deacon Jack Trevino 9. Trustees: No Report 10. Correspondence: Saint Vincent de Paul's society sent a Thank You note for the $ donation for replenishing meat. 11. Unfinished Business: - None 3

4 12. New Business: - Brother Deacon Schaal noted that we include the birthdays of deceased Knights in the newsletter. Grand Knight acknowledged the mistake and promised to provide the newsletter editor with a current membership list. - Holy Name of Jesus desires a perpetual vigil each Friday and Saturday night. Council 7667 is seeking interest and support to add Thursday night and asking Council to observe the midnight to 4:00 AM shift. - Belk Lindsey s semi-annual charity day coming up soon. See Deputy Grand Knight for tickets to buy and sell. - Alford-Washburn center in Pensacola (a Society of St. Vincent de Paul charity) food storage shed flooded during the recent storm. SVdP representative requests $ for repairs. A motion to amend the gift to $ passed. - Pensacola Blue Wahoos baseball team tickets available for next Thursday, May 8, at 6:00 PM. Contact Mary Esther Council for tickets. Cost is $9.00 each. - Destin Council member with autistic son wants to form or reform South Walton's Special Olympics Committee for activities. A field day at Emerald Coast middle school next Friday, May 9, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Insurance Agent: Tim Pugh - Handed out Rosary cards. - Offered pamphlet on Catholic faith basics. - Insurance tip for month: Long-term insurance changing July 1, Take advantage of favorable terms while they remain in effect. - Knights of Columbus insurance named one of the World s Most Ethical Companies. 14. Worthy District Deputy Update: District Deputy Joseph Purka, excused.: 15. Good of the Order: Guy Jordan talked about some of the newer saints. 16. Brothers/Persons in Distress: Wolfgang Geiberger and his wife, Frank Liberatori, Ed Simpson, Ed Ehring, Jeannette Schaal, repose of the soul of Robert F. Milligan, and prayers for his widow, Rita and four children and extended family members, Regina Joyce, those affected by weather in Mid-west and Southeast this past week; and brother Knights and family members in distress. 5 Habitat for Humanity On Saturday, 10 May, Knights from Council contributed to the construction of a new Habitat for Humanity home in Crestview, Florida. Eleven Brothers from Christ Our Redeemer teamed-up with volunteers from the U.S. Army 7 th Special Forces Group to install doors and windows, enclose roofline eaves, and run interior wiring. The combined team completed all planned activities for the day one hour ahead of schedule and by day s end the Habitat Site Manager was able to secure the building with locking windows and doors. Well done, Knights! Slate of Officers for Fraternal Year During the May General Assembly Meeting, the Council nominated Officers for the next Fraternal Year. All vacancies on the slate were filled by the close of nominations. We thank these gentlemen for their willingness to serve the best interests of our Council! 6 Council Deep Sea Fishing Trip On Saturday, 3 May, Knights, family members, and friends set sail for a day of deep sea fishing from Destin Harbor, the world s luckiest fishing village. Organized by Brother Sir Knight Charles Tobia, Christ Our Redeemer s twelve fisherman (!) enjoyed calm seas, perfect weather, and an abundance of good luck. The day-long outing was a family-friendly time for fellowship and laughter. Everyone had a great time together, hauling in Snapper, Mingo, and Amberdeen. Our special thanks to Charles for planning this great event! 6

7 Knight of the Month April Congratulations to our Brother Knight, Kevin Knebl, April 2014 Knight of the Month! The old saying goes, If you need a job done, ask a busy person. Kevin certainly fills that bill! Council Advocate and Youth Committee Director, member of the Parish Finance Council, and active supporter of the Boy Scouts, Kevin serves our Council, Parish, and community with tireless devotion. We offer our deep and abiding thanks to him for his service and we extend our congratulations to him on this well-deserved honor! Family of the Month April Congratulations to our Brother Knight, Adam Dieterich, and his wife, Sarah, April 2014 Family of the Month! Adam and Sarah are a model family at Christ Our Redeemer Parish. Active in Knights activities throughout the year, Adam also serves as the Chairman of the Parish Finance Council. Sarah shares her musical gifts with all parishioners, playing the piano and singing hymns as an integral member of our Music Ministry. At the same time, they re raising three small children in the tenets of our Catholic faith -- remarkable! This couple s contributions to our Council s mission and to the richness of our Church community are blessings we all enjoy. Our special thanks to them for their devoted service and our congratulations on this well-deserved honor! 7

If you re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve. When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. 9 Saint of the Month June 2014 St. Barnabas, (Born on Cyprus around the beginning of Christianity, Died c. AD 61) Feast Days: June 11 th Patron Saint of: Cyprus, Antioch, against hailstorms, invoked as peacemaker. Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, comes as close as anyone outside the Twelve to being a full-fledged apostle. He was closely associated with St. Paul (he introduced Paul to Peter and the other apostles) and served as a kind of mediator between the former persecutor and the still suspicious Jewish Christians. When a Christian community developed at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the official representative of the Church of Jerusalem to incorporate them into the fold. He and Paul instructed in Antioch for a year, after which they took relief contributions to Jerusalem. Later, Paul and Barnabas, now clearly seen as charismatic leaders, were sent by Antioch officials to preach to the Gentiles. Enormous success crowned their efforts. After a miracle at Lystra, the people wanted to offer a sacrifice to them as gods, (Barnabas being Zeus and Paul as Hermes), but the two said, We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God (see Acts 14:8-18). But all was not peaceful. They were expelled from one town, they had to go to Jerusalem to clear up the ever-recurring controversy about circumcision and even the best of friends can have differences. When Paul wanted to revisit the places they had evangelized, Barnabas wanted to take along John Mark, his cousin, author of the Gospel, but Paul insisted that, since Mark had deserted them once, he was not fit to take along now. The disagreement that followed was so sharp that Barnabas and Paul separated, Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus, Paul taking Silas to Syria. Later, they were all reconciled: (Paul, Barnabas and Mark). When Paul stood up to Peter for not eating with Gentiles for fear of his Jewish friends, we learn that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy (see Galatians 2:1-13). Barnabas is mentioned by name as one of the generous members of the idyllic and extremely poor Church in Jerusalem: "The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. "Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas, (which is translated son of encouragement ), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles" (Acts 4:32, 34-37). Barnabas is spoken of simply as one who dedicated his life to the Lord. He was a man "filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. Thereby large numbers were added to the Lord." Even when he and Paul were expelled from Antioch in Pisidia, (modern-day Turkey), they were "filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." 9
