Bob Johnson Guy Jordan 1028 White Point Road Niceville, Florida Our History Unless otherwise posted, the Council s General Assembly convenes on the first Thursday of each month and the Executive Committee meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. Both meetings are conducted in the Christ Our Redeemer Parish Hall at 7:00 PM. Fourth Degree members of Council and Council 7667 comprise Assembly The Fourth Degree Assembly convenes on the third Thursday of each month, alternating meeting locations between Christ our Redeemer Parish (even months) and Holy Name of Jesus Parish (odd months). In June 2004, the Knights of Columbus conferred the Charter establishing Council at Christ Our Redeemer Parish. On July 1, 2004, our first Grand Knight, Len Casey, convened the Council s inaugural meeting and fraternal year. The Council earned the Star Award that year and Double Star Awards each of the next five years. In , under the leadership of Past Grand Knight, Jack Starr, earned the Best Florida Council (Division II) distinction. In 2009, Sir Knight Dave Halupowski was honored as the State of Florida Knight of the Year. 1

2 From the Grand Knight s Desk My Brothers, we ve entered the final month of the Fraternal Year and by every measure we enjoyed a rewarding and successful season of service in fellowship with one another. We finish this year with a Council that is larger and stronger and focused on the future, and those attributes portend an even better year ahead. Praise the Lord! As we prepare to take a short break from the dynamic calendar of activities we participated in this past year, your new Executive Committee will begin planning for the season our Tenth Anniversary Year as a Council. A Decade of Service is a significant milestone and we intend to celebrate this hallmark year in many special ways. I am confident that we will all come together, from Charter members to our newest First Degree Knights, to make the most of this unique and fleeting moment in the history of Council If you have ideas for events or you are simply interested in involving yourself in the various activities, please contact any member of the Executive Committee to share your thoughts on how to make this year our best ever. This is your Council; it belongs to each and every one of you, and we want everyone to enjoy the blessings of the year ahead. 3 General Assembly Meeting Minutes June 6, 2012 Meeting opened with a prayer led by our Worthy Grand Knight. Roll Call: All officers present or excused. Excused officers included: Advocate, Recording Secretary, Outside Guard, 1 st and 2 nd year Trustee. 1. May Minutes approved without changes. 2. Applications for Membership: Andrew Johnson went through his 1 st Degree ceremony before the General Meeting. A second degree ceremony will be held Sunday, 9 June in Crestview at 2 PM. 3. Grand Knight Report: The Grand Knight stated that as the full year passes the State of the Council is strong!! We grew by 10% and the pastor our pastor, Father Bob, became our friar. And our council collectively has achieved great benefits for our community, parish and brother knights. This past month we had 3 knights make their 1 st and 2 nd degrees Additionally we had one Knight make his 3 rd degree. This weekend we need knights to support the End of School Pancake Breakfast and membership drive. Knight of the month for June is Adrian Banegas Family of the month for June is Andy and Brenda Balding 4. Chaplain s Report: None 5. Treasurer s Report: $10, General fund: $5, Scholarship: $4, Financial Secretary Report: Transactions: o Bills: We paid the State Bill of $1, Service Programs: Membership Andrew Johnson made First Degree Ceremony tonight. This meets our required membership goal for Star Council. Council Charles Tobia o None Community Guy Jordan o There were many Knights at the Habitat for Humanity work site on 18 May, at the Patriot House, 106 Methodist Avenue in Ft Walton Beach. o Next HH work will be conducted in Walton County. More info to follow. 3

4 o Andy Balding will be taking Community chairperson for the new year. Trustees John Rafferty o Reminder the next audit is due in August. Vocations John Rafferty o None Family Joseph Allard o Knight of the Month: Andreas Banegas o Knight Family of the Month: Andy and Brenda Balding. Youth Greg Muntzner o We have awarded four scholarship winners to: Trevor Sears, Courtney Testa, Kayleigh Catnaw and Erika Richard o Our WGK attended the NHS Award Ceremony and was very impressed by the number of scholarships awarded with an overall dollar total of $3.5M. Our recipients received multiple awards a sign of their hard work and studies. Church Ron Rabiansky o Corporate Communion Will be held on 9 June at 7:30 AM Mass, preceded by the Rosary at 7 AM. Ron encouraged all to wear Knights polo shirts and attend rosary. o Server Certificates from State Convention will be provided to servers. Culture of Life Dave Halupowski o Dave mentioned the recent story of the young girl denied a lung transplant because of her age. But now has been approved to receive as an adult. o State Governor, Scott, has signed a bill for State support of medical care to babies that survive an abortion. o Looks like no abortions are being conducted in Pensacola. Fourth Degree John Rafferty o Great American Patriot Contest is complete and awards were presented prior to the May Assembly meeting. o VA clinic support continues on the first Monday of each month. o Honor Guard supported two events: 15 May Confirmation at Christ Our Redeemer and the Memorial Day Ceremony at Doolittle Park. o WFN Moe Power for Assembly 3236 was a State Family of the Year. Publicity o None 8. Unfinished Business: None. 9. New Business: Paid bills. Adrian Banegas will be leaving our area in August. He has run our council s Keep Christ in Christmas campaign and Christmas card sales. We need someone to volunteer to run this year s campaign. Jack Brennan announced that our seminarian, Thomas Kennell, will be in Ft Walton Beach at St Mary s this August to support for a few months. Keep him in your prayers. James Watson requested $150 for the youth group from COR going to Summer camp. Voted and approved. The new Council officer slate was voted on and approved. Request was made to add Youth funds in our next budget. Vince Warsheski requested that someone take responsibility for the KOC grill. Tom Churan offered his trailer for carting the grill to activities and Adam offered his work shop for keeping the grill. 4

Our insurance continues to be one of the top Insurance Contenders and is now 4 th overall. Gave out copies of the Declaration of Independence to Knights. 11. Worthy District Deputy Update - Joe Purka: Upcoming Degree Schedule: o First Degree: 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 6th STAR Council Status: o Supreme records show 12 new members have been recruited, leaving one more to reach our goal. We have surpassed our new insurance members goal. o All reports (185, 365 and Survey of Fraternal activities) and two audits have been filed. Upcoming Reports: o Upcoming Council Elections: o Elections took place at this scheduled business meeting. o Form 185 (Officers chosen for the term) should be completed online for both the state and Supreme websites as soon as possible after elections, but no later than June 30 th. o Installation of new officers should be scheduled in July. o Form 365 is due 1 August. o Semi-Annual Audit is due 15 August. Youth Supplies: o Soccer Challenge is August 15 th. o Substance abuse Awareness Poster Contest is Sept 1 st. o Essay Contest is Sept 1 st. 5

7 Habitat for Humanity On Saturday, 18 May, the gentlemen Knights of Council and their family members participated in the construction of the Patriot House, a Habitat for Humanity project in Fort Walton Beach. Our team worked side-by-side with the prospective home owner, a service veteran living in our community. Special thanks to Brother Andy Balding for organizing and managing this worthy Community Service activity, and to all those who volunteered their Saturday morning to assist a neighbor in need! Knight of the Month June Congratulations to our Brother Sir Knight Adrian Banegas, June 2013 Knight of the Month! Adrian is an involved and visible member of Council who faithfully served as our Treasurer throughout the Fraternal Year. He is a devoted and dependable member of the First Degree Exemplification team, serving as Warden for the ceremonial entrees of our newest members. Adrian has been the Council s point man for the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign for the past three years, and his leadership in that effort is integral to the success we ve enjoyed in this worthy activity. A true Catholic gentleman whose quiet but impactful service are familiar to all our Brothers, Adrian is a treasured member of our Council and our Parish family. Our special thanks to him for his devoted service and our congratulations on this well-deserved honor! 7

8 Family of the Month June Congratulations to our Brother Knight Andrew Balding, and his wife, Brenda, June 2013 Family of the Month! Andy s and Brenda s presence and impact on our Council and Parish are evident each week and all year long! Andy is the captain of the Council s Habitat for Humanity team, responsible for scheduling, organizing, leading, and reporting on all projects conducted throughout the year. He is quick to volunteer for multiple activities and he s generous with time as noted by his early arrival and assistance setting-up for the Council s business meetings. He and Brenda are a visible part of the Doughnut Brigade, too, serving coffee, juice, and sweets to our Parish family after the 10:30 am mass each Sunday. An active, devout, and caring family, Andy and Brenda are a blessing to our Council. Our special thanks to them for their devoted service and our congratulations on this well-deserved honor! Saint of the Month July 2013 St. Martha Feastday: July 29 Patron of servants and cooks "Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus." This unique statement in John's gospel tells us of the special relationship Jesus had with Martha, her sister, and her brother. Apparently Jesus was a frequent guest at Martha's home in Bethany, a small village two miles from Jerusalem. We read of three visits in Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-53, and John 12:1-9. Many of us find it easy to identify with Martha in the story Luke tells. Martha welcomes Jesus and his disciples into her home and immediately goes to work to serve them. Hospitality is paramount in the Middle East and Martha believed in its importance. Imagine her frustration when her sister Mary ignores the rule of hospitality and Martha's work in order to sit and listen to Jesus. Instead of speaking to her sister, she asks Jesus to intervene. Jesus' response is not unkind, which gives us an idea of his affection for her. He observes that Martha is worried about many things that distract her from really being present to him. He reminds her that there is only one thing that is truly important -- listening to him. And that is what Mary has done. In Martha we see ourselves -- worried and distracted by all we have to do in the world and forgetting to spend time with Jesus. It is, however, comforting to note that Jesus loved her just the same. The next visit shows how well Martha learned this lesson. She is grieving the death of her brother with a house full of mourners when she hears that Jesus has just come to the area. She gets up immediately and leaves the guests, leaves her mourning, and goes to meet him. 8

9 Her conversation with Jesus shows her faith and courage. In this dialogue she states clearly without doubt that she believes in Jesus' power, in the resurrection, and most of all that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus tells her that he is the resurrection and the life and then goes on to raise her brother from the dead. Our final picture of Martha in Scripture is the one that sums up who she was. Jesus has returned to Bethany some time later to share a meal with his good friends. In this home were three extraordinary people. We hear how brother Lazarus caused a stir when was brought back to life. We hear how Mary causes a commotion at dinner by annointing Jesus with expensive perfume. But all we hear about Martha is the simple statement: "Martha served." She isn't in the spotlight, she doesn't do showy things, she doesn't receive spectacular miracles. She simply serves Jesus. We know nothing more about Martha and what happened to her later. According to a totally untrustworthy legend Martha accompanied Mary to evangelize France after Pentecost. But wouldn't it be wonderful if the most important thing that could be said about us is "They served"? Pancake Breakfast & Bake Sale On Sunday, 9 June, our Knights and their Ladies presented the semi-annual Pancake Breakfast & Bake Sale from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm in the COR Parish Hall. More than 30 Knights and Ladies participated in the familyfriendly event. The theme for this breakfast was School is Out! and the event featured a Patriotic Coloring Corner for the children. Another corner of the hall displayed Council s many awards and served as the focal point for our latest Membership Drive. Special thanks to Brother Win Fletcher for gathering supplies and organizing our manpower for the breakfast and to Suzie Culkin for coordinating support for the bake sale. The net proceeds of this event, approximately $800, will be donated to Knights of Columbus relief efforts for tornado victims in Oklahoma. 9
