Haere mai te whanau We warmly welcome you in Term 3 and especially welcome the newest members of our school family. We hope that you all enjoyed the break time and kept warm during those several days of extreme winter temperatures. The children have returned from the break settled and ready for another term of learning. On Wednesday afternoon last week we learned of the passing of our dear young friend Sue- Yuen. Sue Yuen started her school days with us in May She became seriously ill in April At that time Sue-Yuen was a year 4 student in Mrs Rutherford's class and she has remained on our school roll throughout her illness. Sue-Yuen and her family have faced challenges that we could not imagine. Their ongoing hope and strength over the past three years and three months has been inspirational. A number of families in our community have been quietly supporting the family and deserve our prayerful gratitude. It remains for us now to give prayerful thanks for the life of Sue-Yuen. Those of us who knew her will remember a bright vivacious child, gentle and caring in nature, with an enormous capacity to brighten up the lives of those around her. I will never forget my last conversation with Sue-Yuen the day before she became ill. She asked me to play four square with her and thankfully I said yes. This beautiful child who will always remain a part of us has been set free into eternal life. May she rest in peace. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we are holding a BRIGHT COLOURS MUFTI DAY in loving memory of Sue-Yuen. 2 Reporting on Student Progress A reminder that this coming week we are reporting on student progress. The portfolios with examples of the children s work were sent home last Friday 24th July and our second round of interviews is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th July. Special Character Review Late last term Mr Paul Ferris visited the school and carried out a review of all aspects of our Special Character. The feedback from Paul reflects very positively on the school. I would like to congratulate my colleagues, staff, Board members, Parents and Friends, families, parishioners and everyone who contributes to make our school the vibrant faith community that it is. Thank you from our Parents and Friends Mid Winter Pyjama Social / AGM with Guest Speaker A good number of families joined us near the end of last term for a wonderful end of term celebration. We all appreciated Sam s presentation on Restorative Practices. ATTACHED IS AN INORMATION POWERPOINT AND A SURVEY RELATING TO RESTORATIVE PRACTICES PRESENTATION. WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIETE IT IF YOU COULD COMPLETE THE SURVEY WHICH WILL ASSIST WITH OUR ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. Ice Skating Evening. Friday 21 st August. Mark your calendars now for the PFA s annual Ice Skating evening (Refer to the PFA Poster) Many of you will be very familiar with, and have committed to memory either voluntarily or involuntarily, our Epic Cheese Roll Song. The release of this song follows an amazing Ruma Toroa and community effort lead by Mr Tili. Thanks once again for your support for this mammoth cheese roll making effort which has raised $3,000 in funds. DO continue to spread the word so that we can reach our target of 1000 viewings. When I checked in the weekend it was up to 804!!!

3 Dominican News Feast Day Celebrations Friday 7 th August Mass Holy Name Church Visit to St Mary s School Kaikorai We are preparing to celebrate this event and will join with other Dominican Charism schools at Holy Name Church for Mass at 10:30am on Friday 7 th August. St Mary s School Kaikorai has invited us to visit with them after the Mass in response to their visit with us last year. We will be joining them for lunch and some fun activities and will return to school at 2:30pm. Spea Sunday Family Masses Term 3 Sunday 23 rd August 10:00am Holy Name Church Sunday 20 th September 9:30am Sacred Heart Church Could the children please arrive for music practice half an half an hour before Mass starts dressed in school uniform. Come and celebrate with our Parish/Pastoral Area community Mufti Mania Day Catholic Children Helping Catholic Children in the Pacific Thank you!! we raised $70 WHAT: Mufti Mania is an annual fundraising event for Catholic primary schools. WHY: Every Catholic primary school is invited to be involved in this fundraiser as a gesture of service to and solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Pacific. WHEN: It is set down each year for the last Friday of Term 2. Funds raised by schools on this day are forwarded to the Treasurer of NZCPPA who passes the funds on to Caritas. Last year our schools nationally raised $17,187 to support a rebuilding project at St Joseph s College in Tonga. Sports Update Netball players of the day: From last term: Pippa and Nuala, Adam and Jordy. Last week: Iris and Danniell

4 REGULAR SCHOOL EVENTS Earlybirds Pre-school Programme Fortnightly on Mondays at 1:30pm in the Library and Adjoining Room The children do a variety of activities including Arts and Crafts, Music, Alphabet and Number work, in a relaxed fun setting. They also spend time with Ruma Kiwi. The first session for Term 3 was held today. Remaining dates are: 10 th August, 24 th August, 7 th September and 21 st September. Invite your friends along for a warm welcome. Dance Tuition Wednesdays After School Xzenia and her team from Otago Dancers will run their regular and popular dance lessons after school on Fridays this term (plese note the change of day). New children are welcome. Inquire at the office for more information. Weekly Mãori Hui This is a time when we gather to celebrate our bi-cultural identity in a Mãori context through Waiata (song) and Te Reo Mãori language with some aspects of Pasifika culture and language. We are grateful to Mr Tili for leading this initiative for us. Whaea Emere Leitch-Munro is working with us again this year as we prepare for the Maori and Pacific Island Festival in September. Members of the parish and school community are welcome to join us between 12:10pm and 12:40pm on Fridays in Ruma Toroa. After School Care For those busy working families who may require after school care, an OSCAR approved after school care programme, Play Ball Dunedin, has been established at DNI directly across the road from our school. Please check their website for more information and enrolment instructions.
