1 1. Conversation Starter 2 minutes Lead into the lesson by discussing this week s fruit of the Spirit: joy. JOY 2. Intro Activity 5 minutes Have fun spreading joy through the group as the kids try to resist smiling. 3. Weekly Video 12 minutes The video includes host, God Story, Life Story, and Key Verse segments. God Story: Rejoice! Galatians 5:22-23; Psalm 100 Big Idea: Joy comes from a thankful heart. Key Verses: The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) Leader Tips: Read this lesson plan and note which activities require preparation before the kids arrive. Remember to pray for your group! 4. Small Group Activity 12 minutes * Review today s video teaching and then give the kids options for ways to show thankfulness to God or other people. 5. Key Verse Activity 8 minutes Create posters to help the kids remember Galatians 5: Dismissal Connect with parents. 3 2. INTRO ACTIVITY 1. CONVERSATION STARTER None Leader Tips: Help the kids understand that joy is more than just being happy. It is a deep, full happiness. Use the Conversation Starter to set the tone for your group s time together. None a. Direct everyone to spread out in your group s space. b. Choose someone to be the joy spreader. c. Instruct this person to attempt to make the rest of the kids smile. They cannot touch anyone! d. Everyone else should remain standing, keep their eyes open, and try not to smile. e. If someone smiles, they should team up with the joy spreader. f. Keep playing until everyone has smiled. a. As the kids arrive, welcome them and gather everyone together in a group. b. Discuss: How is joy different than happiness? What makes you feel joy? Who or what brings you joy? c. Depending on the size of your group, have the kids share their answers with the people sitting closest to them or with everyone. d. Introduce this week s Big Idea: Joy comes from a thankful heart. 3. WEEKLY VIDEO Video file Leader Tip: Sit with the kids and encourage them to focus on the video as necessary. a. Play the video. It contains: Host segment God Story (Rejoice! 4 5. KEY VERSE ACTIVITY 4. SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY Thankful activity pages Pens Markers a. Gather your small group together. b. Discuss: What was the God Story about in today s video? What was the Life Story about? What is a psalm? Have you ever written a poem or a song? If so, what was it about? c. Give each person an activity page. d. Place the other supplies where everyone can reach them. e. Direct the kids to choose one of the following options: Make a list of the people in your life whom you re thankful for and explain why. Write a song or a poem of thanks to God. Draw an artistic representation of joy and giving thanks to God. Write a letter to someone you re really thankful for and actually give that person your letter later! f. Follow up to be sure that everyone chooses one of these options and help them get started, g. After several minutes, invite the kids to share what they have done so far. Don t force anyone to share with the group if they don t want to! h. To wrap up, pray together and give thanks for what God has done in your lives.
