2 All that s going on around St Andrew s FROM THE SENIOR MINISTER R E V J O H N D I C K S O N Today I have important news that will affect our ministry for the coming years. After receiving numerous applications for the role of Senior Associate, the interview panel last Saturday interviewed four candidates and unanimously recommended that I offer the position to one outstanding candidate. The position, as many of you know, is a key part of the senior leadership team (or executive) and has particular responsibility for overseeing pastoral care across all four congregations, making sure the needs of our community are met by the members of our community. It is a core portfolio of a healthy church. The eight-member interview panel reviewed CVs and asked probing questions of each of the four ministers shortlisted for the position. Each candidate was asked to prepare a personal response to our 2020 Vision and give an account of how they, given their gifting and experience, would go about fulfilling the role outlined in the job description. Questions about personal life and philosophy of ministry were also asked. At the end of a long Saturday of interviews, the panel unanimously and enthusiastically urged me to invite Rev Matthew Stedman to take up the role of Senior Associate for a term of four years from I am thrilled to report that Matt and Emily have accepted the offer with excitement. It is fair to say that Matt shone in the interview, not just in confidence and clarity but in the way he owned the 2020 Vision and showed a driving passion to see St Andrew s thrive as a community of care. He conveyed both a pastoral heart and, just as importantly for this role, a considered plan to ensure that pastoral care and community building will take place across the entire church. Santino and I have found Matt exceptionally easy to 1 St Andrew s News

3 work with. He is personable and teachable, as well as being insightful. He is also extremely efficient. Admittedly, this is not the outcome I would have predicted six months ago, but I have no doubt that the Lord has been working his purposes as Matt has borne an increased workload with ease and shown himself to be far more than an assistant minister. He is a trusted colleague and confidant to me and a skilled minister of Christ. It is also reassuring how many others across the congregations and within the staff team have spoken to me of Matt s suitability for the role. Please join me in thanking God for this development and in congratulating Matt and Emily on the appointment. There are other staffing decisions to be made in the coming months, not least because of the reshaping of Matt s role. He is in Sydney for a series of lectures but has accepted our invitation to bring his wisdom to bear on this important part of Scripture. He will speak live at 10am - with a video replay at 5pm & 7pm. John is also speaking at Robert Menzies College (Nth Ryde) on how Genesis and Deuteronomy shaped the West: public lectures Fridays 19 July and 2 August at 7pm. See brochure on rear display cabinet. 5 short-term mission trip to Hong Kong between Tue 3rd Sep and Mon 9th Sep. The trip will involve ministry with Crossroads, Hope of The City (a ministry of Island ECC), hearing John Lennox and Ravi Zacharias speak at the Oxford in Asia conference and to hear John Dickson speak at Island ECC. For those who are interested, an information session is being held in the Kelman Room on Sun 21st July at 4:00pm. Contact Malcolm Wood from our 5pm congregation: PLEASE PRAY Churchwide Prayer Please pray for the next Belonging course which begins this Tuesday night. Pray that those attending would feel welcomed, informed and connected to St Andrew s and that more would take the opportunity to join this group or future groups. Pray that members of St Andrew s would be inviting friends to the upcoming preaching series by Ian Powell in August and that these services would help them in engaging with the Christian faith and in their personal understanding of who Jesus is. 10am Prayer Please pray for Tony and Bambi Stavley grieving after the death of Tony s father. Praise God for the salvation he knew in Christ and pray for God s comfort and peace to sustain the family. Thank God that Susie James is safe and home from hospital after a serious pneumonia. Pray that God would grant her healing and ongoing recovery and that she and Al and also the Vernon and James families would know God s sovereign care and be reassured. Pray also for Julie Sellars whose brother has died in England last week. May God comfort her in her deep sadness and in the distance from family. 5pm Prayer Please pray for Rose L a m o n t who is in Northside Hospital pray that God s grace would sustain her in spirit and give her strength and wisdom for the daily challenges she faces. Praise God for the safe arrival of a son, Noah, to J a m e s and D a n i e l l e M a c D o n a l d and pray for the family as they settle in to a new home and church in Terrigal. Continue to pray for P e t e r a n d J e n n y M a c k a y and their family after the sad death of P e t e r s father. 7pm Prayer Please pray for T i m and P e n n y S w a v l e y from the 7pm service as they volunteer in East Timor for the next month. Although Tim will be assisting with engineering and Penny with nursing, they will both be involved in a wide variety of activities within the community. St Andrew s Ministries Pray for our Small Groups as they meet either weekly or fortnightly may they be a rich time of sharing and learning together. Also uplift the group leaders to be prayerful and caring for each member of their group. 6 All that our missionaries do in and around their communities MISSION & AID T H E G R O O M B R I D G E S Ljublijana, Slovenia Mark and Rochelle Groombridge with their children Matej, Philippa and Calvin are serving as CMS Missionaries in Slovenia at the Reformed Evangelical Church in Ljublijana. Mark recently time at the European Leadership Forum which he found very beneficial, although at times he was disappointed that Jesus Christ was not proclaimed clearly. Pray for the REC as it fluctuates in numbers over the long summer break as people take holidays and make the most of the warm weather outdoors. Pray that people will have an opportunity for a good relaxing break, but that they will also consider the importance of still being committed to coming to meet with other Christians regularly. Pray for those who will be preaching, teaching Sunday School and leading Bible studies over the summer. Please pray for wisdom as to how they can disciple some who over summer meet with them on Sundays, but are not meeting with Christians at other times of the year. Praise God for Peter and Lidja Novak and the wonderful way they have served God at REC this year. Peter does a great job teaching God s word and pastoring the congregation and Lidja has never-ending energy and ideas for coordinating Sunday School and kids ministry. Pray that they will have a good time away as a family during the mid-year break, and that they will come back refreshed and ready to keep on serving God. Praise God for the opportunity the Groombridges have again in August to get away for a few days as a church family. This year the church camp will be held over five days at a Christian campsite down on the Croatian border. Pray for those preparing talks and the kids program and especially that those who are new to the church this year (Andraz, Miljia and Miha) will feel comfortable and be able to attend. Pray for patience for Mark and Rochelle with the kids as they are at home for two months over summer. Pray for good family time together. 5 St Andrew s News
