2 Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ C. S. Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, that delightful series of children s books which describe about the Christian faith, and which have been cherished by adults as well. Lewis ends the series with a book, The Last Battle, which focuses on the meaning of death. Aslan, the Lion, is the Christ figure in the series. In the final scene of the book, Aslan says softly, There was a railway accident. Your father and mother and all of you are - as you used to call it in the Shadow Lands - dead. The school term is over, the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning.... The things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them... For us this is the end of all stories... But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning in Chapter One of the Great Story, which no one has ever read; which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before. I just attended the service of Pastor Solomone Ofa Ulu ave this morning. There were so many people who came to say goodbye to their good friend and colleague in a special way. As C. S. Lewis said, death is an ending of our story, but there will be a great new beginning in the Kingdom of God with saints including Pastor Ofa in heaven. There is little that we are told about life after death. Paul put it this way, Now we know only in part we see baffling reflections in a dark mirror... Behold, I tell you a mystery! As children of God, we trust that God has prepared a place for us and will welcome us when our earthly life is over. What a promise and what confidence we have in Christ Jesus! Yes, we know who holds our tomorrow! Rev. 3 MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER Greetings. Brothers and Sisters in Christ! I hope you have jumped into 2019 with renewed Joy in Faith and Hope in Jesus Christ! There is much in store for us this year. As I mentioned in the previous issue of KaLeo, I attended a Cal-Pac Conference Laity Council Retreat on January 5, along with lay leaders from the East, North, South and West Districts. I m so grateful that Judy Olson of First United Methodist Church, Honolulu, took a detour away from time with her family who lives in Las Vegas, to attend the Retreat. The group decided to work toward setting achievable goals and objectives within an initial January to April 2019 timeline. The overall objective for District and Local Church Lay Leaders is: A shared partnership between Laity and Clergy in developing leadership for the benefit of the congregation. To accomplish this: District Lay Leaders will contact regularly by phone or , the District Superintendent and the local lay leaders of the churches. District Lay Leaders shall assist with or attend trainings i.e. How-to s, Lay Servant classes, etc. District Lay Leaders shall utilize Mission Areas (in Hawaii, we use the term Hui ) to provide gathering/ training sessions to the local lay leaders and laity. Local Church Lay Leaders should be introduced to the congregation by the Pastor. Local Church Lay Leaders shall personally be in contact with their congregations. Local Church Lay Leaders shall provide mentorship opportunities to aspiring leaders in their congregations. I m sure you would agree that these are logical and common-sense goals. Our challenge MY challenge--is to put ideas and what s written, into ACTION. Please help me to help you! Thank you for providing Lay Leader contact information at Charges Conferences. The How-to s in March will provide good opportunities for laity to learn and grow. I encourage ALL Local Church Lay Leaders who have not yet taken Basic Lay Servant classes, to enroll and be enlightened by this great introductory study of lay servanthood. Finally, Friends, continue to pray for us United Methodists and A Way Forward. May we all follow God s Calling for us as Christian disciples to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, our one and only Savior. Would you like to experience being part of a decision-making body of our UMC? The process to select several Youth (grades 7-12) and Young Adults (18 post high school - 30 years of age) to be Hawaii District delegates to the California-Pacific Annual Conference has begun. The California-Pacific Annual Conference is June 12-15, 2019 in Redlands, California. The application forms for youth and for young adults will be posted on the district website, under RESOURCES. Click here. The deadline for both the youth application and the young adult application is Thursday, February 28th.

5 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ of the Hawaii District, It is with grateful hearts for God s love that surrounds us always and everywhere that we send you greetings from Saipan and many thanks for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from all of you. Your letters, cards, gifts, and messages on social media lifted our hearts and gave us hope when so many in our community are dealing with loss of property, destroyed homes and businesses, loss of employment, homelessness, and delayed access to education because of Typhoon Yutu which struck the island October 24 th. At this writing, although power was restored to the church and my apartment after 10 ½ weeks, there are places on the island that still do not have power. Your outpouring of funds have already helped to provide emergency supplies, food, water, and to begin to rebuild homes and repair the church. We are proud and thankful to belong to a connectional Church that reaches out with such generosity to our church family when they are going through enormously difficult times. It means so very much to know that you care and that even when long distances separate us, we are cared for, remembered, supported, and loved. Though small, our church has already been able to help several families in the community. As we recover, with your help, we become stronger and better able to help the community to know the love of our amazing God. Thank you for the blessings of your prayers and donations. Pastor Solomone Ofa Ulu ave of Trinity UMC finished his course in faith on January 15, 2019 and is now with the Lord. Please lift up prayers for his wife, Luseane, his family, & friends as they continue to grieve of his passing. Celebration of Life Services were held on January 27 at First UMC and January 28 at Trinity UMC. Please continue to pray for retired pastor, Rev. Bob Nakata who has suffered from another stroke. Please pray for Rev. Roby Correa s daughter, Michelle, for healing and recovery. She had brain surgery on Jan 2nd. Please pray for the delegates who be attending the upcoming Special General Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
