1 North Shore United Methodist Church June 2016 Dear Friends, Pastor Paragraphs As we enter into the summer months of June, July, and August, it s apparent there is a change with our local church calendar. Summer months translate into vacation months. The choir takes a well-deserved rest from the weekly rehearsals and Sunday anthems. Bible studies go on hiatus until the pastor and student intern choose a new topic in the fall, rummage sales are over, church meetings spread out, there is a general slowing down felt throughout the days and weeks. This vacation or rest time got me to thinking about other breaks persons engage in. One of those is the concept of taking a vacation from church. Allow me to share a common story: A couple had been attending church fairly regularly. One Sunday, a member of the family informed the pastor that they were taking a break from church during the summer months. The reason given was they needed more time for family, to catch up on things, to spend more time on the boat, golf course, etc. But don t worry" - this person said, "come September we will be back attending faithfully, and, you can imagine what happened. This couple was never seen in church again. September came and went, so did October, six months later, and years later. devotional time or from faithful giving and tithing? Why is it that when we take these breaks initially, it becomes more difficult to return? Regular church attendance and the engagement with the practice of spiritual disciplines feed our souls. These practices help us to remain connected to our faith community, and provide our lives with an inner peace and joy. So then; why would anyone want to take a break from that? Church is meant to fill us, not to be seen as a burden or obligation. Yes, we all need a literal vacation break, but my point is don t make it a spiritual break. Stay faithful to the gifts God has given you. Rest, change your pace, change your scenery, but don t change your longing for God and your faith community. We are all so much more fulfilled when we remain in relationship with God, our church family, and with one another. Peace in All Things, Pastor Glenna The question that is raised is what happens when we take a vacation from church. Are we also taking a rest from reading scripture, 1

3 The decision to divide the rummage sale into smaller mini sales was tried this year. On April 30 and May 14 North Shore United Methodist Church afforded the public the opportunity to purchase house where items, as well as books and furniture. In spite of a rainy and cold day on April 30 and somewhat similar weather on May 14, the combined total of the smaller sale days was approximately $4000. Thanks is given to all of those who assisted in any way with the execution of this event. Help us make each Sunday morning service into a special time of sharing and worshiping. Readers, Hospitality, and altar flowers are needed throughout the year most Sundays. If you would like to volunteer to provide any of these services, please write your name on the sign-up sheets in the narthex. You may also contact Judy Stiles at or, if easier, send her an at: jhstiles@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your help! Readers - Hospitality - Flowers Summer schedule begins this month, which means the choir will be on recess until September. As is customary, the music program of the church continues in the summer through the assistance of many talented members of the congregation. If you wish to prepare and perform a solo, duet, or any other combination of vocal pieces or if your talents lie in playing an instrument, please contact Pastor Glenna who will make the necessary arrangements for your talents to be displayed on a particular Sunday morning. Her telephone number is O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 3

5 Through Baptism we are initiated into Christ s Holy Church, incorporated into God s mighty acts of salvation, and given new birth through water and the Spirit. UMH pp.33 With those words, Methodists begin a service of baptism. Baptism is sacred to Methodists as to all Christians. Methodists believe baptism is a gift from God. We have two words to describe it. One word is ordinance, meaning it was ordered in Christ s teaching and example. (Matthew 3:13-17; Matthew 28:19-20) We also call it a sacrament, from the Latin sacramentum, meaning sacred. We believe that God s grace is bestowed in the partaking of the act. There are scriptures that demonstrate this. The Bible teaches we are changed by God s grace through the act of baptism. Thus, baptism demonstrates God s actions, not only ours. According to our Church s official document on baptism: Grace brings us to an awareness of our sinful predicament and of our inability to save ourselves; grace motivates us to repentance and gives us the capacity to respond to divine love. In the words of the baptismal ritual: All this is God s gift, offered to us without price. From by Water and the Spirit A United Methodist Document on Baptism What is Baptism s Purpose Baptism is the rite of admission into the covenant community Baptism is a rite demonstrating the washing away of the guilt of Original Sin Baptism is the rite by which God s Spirit begins a new life for a person Doesn t the Bible Teach Total Immersion We believe the Bible does not insist on only one correct mode. Several instances in the Bible [exist] referring to baptism which do not describe total immersion: Mark 7:4, Hebrews 9:10, Exodus 30: Corinthians 10:2, Mark 10:38, John 13:26 [and] incidentally, there was a Greek word that meant submerge - Kataklysmos. The word was never used to describe baptism in the Bible. Why Baptize Infants The Bible does not specifically command that infants should be baptized. However, in no place does the Bible exclude infants and children from baptism. There are Scriptural [passages which can be interpreted as the reason] for Infant Baptism: John 3:16 and Matthew 28:19 - Infants are a part of the world which is loved by God and are included in all nations. There are references entire household being baptized Acts 11:14, Acts 16: 15, 33, 1 Corinthians 1:16. ARTICLE ADAPTED FROM UMC.ORG. 6 Father s Day June 19th The liturgical calendar identifies the third Sunday in June as the 13 th Sunday in Ordinary Time; a day that holds no particular distinction in the church calendar. However, for a number of people, this June Sunday is of relative high importance on this day, we honor and celebrate that allimportant individual, DAD. Similar to Mother's Day, the celebration of Father's Day has beginnings in Methodism in the United States. Mother's Day was established by Anna Jarvis, a member of the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton West Virginia during the first decade of the 20th century. Grace Golden Clayton was a member of the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in the first decade of the 20th century. She suggested to her pastor that a service be given to honor the memory of the more than 300 men who died in the mining disaster in the town of Monongah, West Virginia on December 6, 1907; an explosion that represents the worst disaster of such kind in the history of the USA up to this point. However, the credit for the modern celebrations of Father's Day is often given to Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd. Born in 1882 in a small town in Arkansas. As a small child she moved west to the state of Washington with her parents and six siblings. Her mother died there in 1898, leaving her husband William Jackson Smart to raise all the children alone. By 1909, Mother's Day was well-established and had come to Spokane Washington where Sonora now a young wife and mother lived. One Sunday morning, the story tells us, Sonora heard her pastor give praises to the newly instituted Mother's Day celebrations from the pulpit of the Central Methodist Episcopal Church where she attended as a member. She felt that every one of the pastor's statements also applied to her father, who had brought her up, along with all of his children, by himself. The sermon gave her the idea that they should set a day aside to honor men like her father. The first celebration of Father's Day happened on June 19, 1910, at the Spokane YMCA. History tells us that Pres. Woodrow Wilson spoke at the celebrations this day in Spokane, but did not make the day official at that time due to the heavy resistance in Congress. In 1924, Pres. Calvin Coolidge recommended that June 19 be observed by the nation to honor all fathers, but again stopped short of making a declaration. Father's Day was "all but dismissed" for the next two decades. It was not until 1957 when Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (Maine) wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for more than 40 years, as Mother's Day had become a reality since the beginning of the 20th century. It was President Lyndon B. Johnson who wrote the first presidential declaration in Six years later the day became a permanent holiday when Pres. Richard Nixon signed it into law in Since then, Father's Day is celebrated each year on the third Sunday of June, in a manner much the same way as Mother's Day. The day celebrates fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of all males through the many variations of the American family of the 21st century. 6

7 Reacquaint Yourself With By Ellen Paseltiner J udi Stiles has been attending North Shore United Methodist Church since she moved with her family to Glencoe in 1961 at the age of 8, making her one of our long-time members. Judi's parents, Jim and Helen Stiles, were both Methodist and were married in a Methodist Church. Jim grew up in Lake Bluff and Helen grew up in Waukegan. Helen had a good voice, and her voice teacher had her travel to various churches on Sunday mornings to sing solos. One Sunday, Helen sang at Jim's church in Lake Bluff and the rest, as they say, is history. Both Jim and Helen sang in the choir at North Shore United Methodist for years - Jim was a low bass and Helen was a high soprano. Jim had a number of different businesses related to processing clean water. They moved to Glencoe to live between his two business locations in Maywood and Zion. Eventually, Jim closed the Maywood location and just commuted to Zion. Jim and Helen had a large family - Judi has five brothers and two sisters. Judi grew-up in the Glencoe Schools and attended New Trier High School. She went on to Western Illinois University and studied Home Economics. When Judi graduated, many schools were discontinuing Home Economics departments. Judi worked at North Shore United Methodist Church for two years after college as a secretary, education director and youth group coordinator. Reverend David Tracy was the minister at the time. She then worked in the banking field for a number of years since she was a math minor in college. She worked at the Glencoe National Bank, the First National Bank of Skokie and the First National Bank of Mt. Prospect in the loans and mortgages area. Eventually, Judi left banking and returned to school to get her Master in Special Education. She was hired at the Abbott Middle School in Waukegan, where she worked for 23 years, retiring in June 2015.As a child growing up at North Shore United Methodist Church, Judi remembers lots of children at Sunday School. Her father was involved in the fundraising for the building of the second story of the education wing, kitchen and Barbee Hall. She said that he was able to get the industrial refrigerator for the kitchen, which is the same one still in use! All the classrooms were used for Sunday School and the present day chapel was divided with a partition to make two classrooms. There were also classrooms in the basement. Each grade had a Sunday School class. She remembers very dedicated teachers. Wade and Bev Fetzer led the MYF which was lots of fun. Judi was treasurer and they raised a lot of money through car washes and other events. Mildred Kemp led the Junior Choir and Mr. Kemp led the High School and Senior Choir. Judi did a lot with Sandy Catlin. She remembers going over to her house after school and learning knitting from Betty Catlin. Judi says that she was baptized in Waukegan, but confirmed at North Shore when she was eleven. She particularly remembers her confirmation because it was around that time that she discovered that she had Type 1 diabetes. She had to be in the hospital for a month, but was allowed to come to church on Easter for her confirmation. Judi has sung in the choir since 1961, taught Sunday School, served on almost every committee in the church and worked at the Rummage Sale in the Women's Department. She particularly likes the church because she knows all the people. She enjoys greeting new people and feels that she's an open and friendly person, who can answer their questions about the church because she's been part of it for so long. She loves to hug people and loves to smile. She also likes living nearby the church in Glencoe so she can drop in during the week as well as come on Sundays. Our congregation is lucky to have such a long-standing and dedicated member, who brightens our Sundays with music, and has served the church in many ways. 7
