1 Pastor paragraphs Dear Friends, Welcome Back! The September Issue of the Church Chimes signals the start of our regular church activities as we say goodbye to the leisure of summer. Choir rehearsals have resumed, the children s Christian education program has been planned and another adult Bible study will begin mid-month. We will also welcome Valerie Hummel LaBounty, our newly married Field Education Student as she begins her second academic year of seminary at Garrett. I hope you have been enriched this summer as you engaged in the activities you enjoy. Travel, concerts, reconnecting with old friends and having opportunities to visit new places allows us to engage with the familiar as well as experience new understanding and learning. As I was thinking about revisiting the familiar and experiencing new learning, I have been reflecting on the summer lectionary and sermon series that evolved from the Hebrew texts of 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and the Song of Solomon. For the past 12 weeks, we have been revisiting the story of David and Solomon. Stories that may have been familiar to us as we recalled the first time we heard them while children in Sunday school or participants in a vacation bible school. These stories included the prophet Samuel and his anointing of David as the leader of Israel, the stories of David the young shepherd boy and his battle with the giant Goliath, the stories of an adult King David and Bathsheba and ending with King Solomon, the son of David who would build the temple to house the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem. Revisiting these stories while familiar, also led us to new understanding. As we examined in greater detail events in the life and times of David and Solomon, which were NOT told to us in our younger years. The stories that dealt with life situations and poor choices, stories that revealed the consequences of our actions that affect many. Yet- we also encountered the Good News stories that show God working and keeping God s promises and the grace of God to continue in relationship with us throughout our faults and failings. These summer weeks allowed us the time to dig deep into the ancient stories of the Bible in a leisurely manner, and my hope is that we have grown in our understanding of scripture in surprising new ways as we revisited the old and discovered the new. 4 "Reacquaint yourself with " By Ellen Paseltiner Leonia Burton is one of our oldest active members of the church. She is 93 years old. Leonia and her husband moved to Glencoe from Evanston in At that time, there was a welcome committee in the village who visited new residents. They asked the Burtons to fill out a card with information, including what religious denomination they were. They had been attending the Methodist Church in Evanston and filled in "Methodist". Dr. Irving, the Minister from North Shore Methodist (it was not "United" at that time), came to visit them. He invited them to attend a service and see if they liked the church. He also said that they were hoping to integrate the church. The Burtons attended and decided to join, becoming the first black family to do so. Over the years, Leonia has provided a lot of service to the church through various positions. Her first position was as secretary of the Sunday school. One of her primary jobs was to collect the money that the children in the Sunday school donated each Sunday. The children had their own envelopes and the teachers would leave them outside each classroom in a basket on the door. Leonia would collect the envelopes and enter the amount in the ledger and then leave it for the Trustees. She also taught Sunday school, was Communion Chairman, Altar Flowers Chairman, Memorial Service Chairman, and was in charge of decorating the church at Christmas and Easter. Her children attended the Sunday school and were part of the Youth Group while they were growing up. Leonia was very active in the Rummage Sales where she was Housewares chairman for many years. Alice Peterson would come from Indiana to help out in the department until she took over running it. Then Leonia ran the shoes and purses department. She said that the Women's Society was very active and would have a big luncheon before Thanksgiving every year. She would help prepare the food for that luncheon. The Morning Circle made gifts for the trays at the Methodist Home. She also assisted in preparing food for the soup kitchens that the church served in the city. Leonia has been a vital part of NSUMC for fifty-three years! Thank you, Dr. Sam and Mary Kormoi! We were recently delighted to have Dr. Sam and Mary sing a beautiful Kende hymn and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with us this past July. Their remarkable dedication and faithfulness are a real inspiration to all. As founders of Pan-African Rural Health and Social Services, they are committed to continuing the work of reducing life s burdens in rural Africa by providing clear drinking water, decent toilet facilities, school supplies for Community Educational Empowerment, medical supplies, community farming initiatives, new and used clothing, youth vocational training to stem urban migration, orphanage support with clothing and toys, Methodist Church ministries (To read further information about the work being carried out in Sierra Leone, please consult the E-chimes issue sent out to the congregation on Wednesday, July 29, 2015). 5 With many thanks Choir rehearsals begin September 3. Nancy would like to begin practices as early as possible, in order to be fully ready to do a "bang-up job" on the first service, September 13. For NSUMC, the summer break has come to an end. Together, we successfully carried the music portion of Sunday morning worship services. Thanks to those enthusiastic singers who responded to the call and overand-over said "yes" to singing solos, duets, or ensembles. Dedication and commitment to a well-balanced worship experience is one of the many reasons that makes North Shore United Methodist Church a very special place of worship in the North Shore. As always, rehearsals are in the Upper Room, Thursday nights at 7:30 PM. Hope we will see you there! 6 Woman Charged Following Discovery of Dog-Hoarding in Glencoe. This was the headline one of the newspapers in the North Shore community of Glencoe carried on May 18, Many people in this small town were shocked and appalled that such a thing would happen in their city. Although a few of the animals died, many were rescued and adopted by concerned citizens. Some animals are still awaiting adoption. Read the story below, taken from the Glencoe Anchor, to see the destiny of one of the rescued animals; Page 6
