The Church Chimes Dear friends, This month s article includes a visual, for I wanted to provide a simple illustration and a sampling of the persons and organizations that benefit from our Annual Rummage Sales. The chart below does not list all the beneficiaries; I was unable to compile a complete list by the publication deadline. Nonetheless, it provides some idea of where our discards go and the organizations they support. For example, leftover furniture was utilized by Habitat for Humanity to furnish homes; and the Cancer Federation, Amvets, and the Salvation Army utilized the housewares, linens, and books. Congregation Hakafa found a need for the Adult personal items. In other words, very little of the items left at our sale went to waste. My point is this, the Rummage Sale is much more than an avenue to raise funds for our general budget, the Rummage Sale is a mission project! Non-profit agencies can further their mission and ministries through the utilization of those items that remain after the conclusion of the sale. The Rummage sale provides an exercise in church-community-building, as volunteers gather to work and share in food and fellowship. The sale provides an opportunity to reach out to our community and neighbors and provides those who live on limited incomes with chances to purchase items they could not otherwise afford. Finally, the sale is an example of good stewardship as items are repurposed and kept from landfills. Thank you to all of our members and friends who participated in this worthwhile mission, it feels good when you can help others! Blessings, Pastor Glenna Rummage Sale Missions NSUMC Ministries Cancer Federation Amvets Habitat for Humanity Hakafa & Others 1 P age

2016 Graduates honored Each year, the North Shore United Methodist Church is proud to honor the young people who have finished some course of study. Among this year s graduates is Andrew Ruszczyk son of Brad and Rachel Langenbach and grandson of long-time members Carolyn and David Langenbach. Andrew has chosen to attend Western Illinois University to pursue studies in fire science. Captain Edward S Burczak. former member of the Evanston Fire Department, was the father of Rev. Dr. Barbara Javore and Mary Figueredo. Some years ago, Mr. Burczak received an honorary pin from the Evanston Fire Department for the many years of dedicated work and service given to the Evanston community. Ms. Figueredo and Reverend Javore wanted to pass on this honor by bestowing it to Andrew, who will join the ranks of public servant upon completion of his studies. Church Website upgrade currently in progress The Communications Committee, along with Brian Brandt and Valerie LaBounty, has been diligently working on an upgrade of the church s website for the past several months. A more robust webpage will soon be available for all the North Shore United Methodist Church congregation to enjoy. Hopefully, this enhanced site will be running and available for use by July 31, Stay tuned to new developments! Adult Forum - Sundays, July 10 & 17 July 10: David Rubens, Director of the North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble, presents a series of readings of his personal literary works. The first reading reflects on growing up in Glencoe. The second reading highlights some of David s sonnets and short stories. July 17: Tomoko Shibuya has been church organist at NSUMC for several years now. She will present photos from her recent vacation to Japan. Be sure not to miss this informative, and without a doubt, most interesting presentation. The adult forums are a part of the education programs the North Shore United Methodist Church offers. Participation as a presenter are open to all members and friends who wish to enlighten the congregation on any topic. If you wish to present a subject, kindly contact coordinator MARY FIGUEREDO at mfigueredo@gbop.org, or call her at to arrange an open Sunday. 2 P age

Sunday, May 29 was the final Sunday for David Rubens temporary assignment as choir director. At that service, Mr. Rubens spoke about his experience with the choir. Below you can read his short address, which he requested to have reprinted in the chimes: W e all have a joy in common that we share here every Sunday morning as we hear the music offered to us. And, it has been my special honor along with our brilliant organist Tomoko Shibuya, to explore with our congregant vocal artists, music that is not intended to entertain, but to inspire. We, all of us together, have come to the realization that our important responsibility is to carry that inspired energy into the service so that we hear and understand more fully what is being said, and then, to carry those understandings into our lives with that inspiration. We have to thank these few people for continuing the 100-year vocal tradition at North Shore United Methodist Church - Sopranos: Beverly Fetzer, Lisa Goodale, Leslie Muir, and Helen Moy; Mezzo-Sopranos: Nancy Haynor, and Judi Stiles; Tenors: Ed Goodale, and Carlos Figueredo; Basses: James Simmons, Brian Brandt and David Langenbach. So now, I would ask you all to stand and, with your applause, thank them for the inspiration they have brought into all our lives. David L. Rubens May 29, 2016 Prayers for Jim Simmons. Prayers for Stuart Phillips. Prayers for Judi Stiles for healing and recovery. Prayers for Phyllis Jones, the mother of Jim Simmons. Prayers for all those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Prayers for Carolina Ibarra. Ed Kemp and family. Linda Fetzer. Tull Monsees, who is at The Mather in Evanston. For all those in need of healing. For those who are unemployed and searching for meaningful work. For an end to gun violence in our cities. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 3 P age

Get Reacquainted With by Ellen Paseltiner Peggy Bucklin, office manager, came to North Shore United Methodist Church (NSUMC) nine years ago, in June Peggy worked for Von Maur in The Glen as a stock person in the women s shoe department when she decided to seek a job that was not as hard on her back. She saw an advertisement for the office job at NSUMC and sent in her resume. She was interviewed and received an offer to work at the church. Peggy was born near Milwaukee and moved to Mt. Prospect with her family when she was nine years old. She attended Prospect High School. Her father worked in the insurance business, and her mother was a bookkeeper at an electrical engineering firm. Peggy is the youngest of three sisters who were born five years apart. When Peggy was growing up in Mt. Prospect, she attended St. Raymond s Catholic Church and was confirmed there in the eighth grade. Her mother and father divorced when Peggy was in middle school, and her mother later remarried. Her mother moved with her new husband to Lake Barrington Shores in Barrington. After high school, Peggy jumped right into the work world. Her mother helped Peggy get a job doing secretarial work at the same electrical engineering firm where she was a bookkeeper. Peggy spent the first year after school living with her mother and stepfather at Lake Barrington Shores. Peggy needed a Lake Barrington Shores sticker on her car to get in and out of the community. This sticker would play a crucial role in the way Peggy met her future husband, Steve Bucklin. After a year, Peggy moved to Northbrook off Sanders Road near All State Insurance. Her future husband worked for the security company that helped direct traffic in the afternoons in the very busy parking lot. For six months, when Peggy was driving in the parking lot, they would see each other and wave to one another. Steve recognized the Lake Barrington Shores sticker on Peggy s car because Steve s father owned the security company that he worked for and Lake Barrington Shores was a client. At some point, Steve decided that he would like to ask Peggy out. Through the security company, he was able to look up her license plate and leave a note on her car one morning to see if she wanted to meet for a drink. Peggy was unsure, but her mother encouraged her to go on the date - that it would be an adventure. However, Peggy was only 20 years old at the time and could not go to a bar. Instead, she went to meet Steve but sat outside the bar. He came up to her and asked if she was there to meet someone who left a note on her car window. She said yes and instead of the drink, they went to a James Bond movie and dinner that evening. They dated for three more years and got married in They have three daughters, Bridget, who is now 28, Shannon, 25, and Tara, 22. When the girls were growing up, the family attended the Glenview Community Church where Peggy and Steve were married. When asked what Peggy likes about being at North Shore United Methodist Church, she says that she is happy to have worked here for nine years and the time has passed quickly. She emphasizes that the people are very friendly and nice. She has a sense of accomplishment by doing the things that she does and feels that she can help out in many ways. Peggy s regular duties in the office include putting together the church bulletin each week, sending out the weekly echimes on Wednesdays, and keeping the church calendar up to date to avoid conflicts. She straightens the pews each week and makes sure that the offering envelopes and attendance sheets are stocked. She also provides the sign-up sheets for the table in the rear of the Narthex. Other behind the scenes tasks that she does are filling up the water fountain in the Memorial Garden when Bev Fetzer is out of town, ordering some of the paper and coffee supplies for the kitchen and bringing in the garbage bins from the street each week. All the while, she also handles s and telephone calls coming into the office. We have been lucky to have Peggy, a calm and steady presence in our office, for almost a decade. She is the face and voice of NSUMC for many people who come to visit or who call. She always has a kind word of welcome. We thank her for all she does to keep our church in order and running smoothly. 5 P age

The United Methodist Church: Open Doors or Not? By Lisa Goodale The General Conference of the United Methodist Church met in Portland, Oregon to set policy and direction for the church worldwide. Many UMC members and delegates entered the assembly optimistic that positive change would take place on full inclusion of LGBTQI persons as UMC members and clergy. When it became clear that change was not to be, conference delegates approved by a very close margin a proposal from the Council of Bishops designed to keep the church from splintering over the issue. Passage of that proposal means that a diverse commission of UMC members will be formed to research and revise the Book of Discipline s language about LGBTQI people and to call for a special session of General Conference (in 2018 or 2019) to address the Commission s work and recommendations. Some Conference delegates and observers left with a belief that this action moved the church in a positive direction, while others felt deep discouragement. NSUMC representatives Leslie Muir, Ed and Lisa Goodale, and Pastor Glenna attended an After GC 2016 Northern Illinois Conference meeting on June 12 at First UMC in Park Ridge. Attending were representatives of most of the Conference s 50 Reconciling churches, campus ministries, and communities. Among many others, we greeted our former Pastor Jenny Weber and former District Superintendent James Preston. Labeled as an opportunity to honor, lament, reflect, converse, and begin to think how to move forward, the meeting provided some outlet. Many people did lament. A few expressed the possibility that the strong alliance between the more conservative U.S. UMC members and representatives of African United Methodists will now make it impossible for the church to approve of openly gay or lesbian clergy. The African representatives embody a large percentage of UMC members worldwide. Thoughts for any UMC clergy to officiate at same-sex marriage ceremonies may also be in the future through the alliance. Conference Bishop Sally Dyck part of the Council of Bishops was open in discussing the political considerations in the decisionmaking. There was much talk of the very real possibility that there may be a division of the church over this issue. What does this mean for NSUMC? As a Reconciling Congregation and a part of the Northern Illinois Conference which has historically supported full inclusion of LGBTQI persons in all aspects of the church, we have pledged to keep our doors open to all and to minister fully to all, without discriminating because of sexual orientation. Although it is much too early to tell if the Bishops Commission will lead to a split in the church, we may have decisions to make in the future. We also look forward to continued opportunities to share information, dialogue, and consider actions needed from this point on. If you are interested in becoming a part of the NSUMC Reconciling Ministries Task Force, please contact either switch to Outlook task force chair Ellen Paseltiner (pasels@aol.com) or Pastor Glenna (revglenna@gmail.com). 6 P age

July 4 Friendly Volunteers Needed! NSUMC members and friends of all ages are needed in Glencoe on Monday, July 4 to continue our tradition of distributing bottled water to the community as a sign of hospitality and visibility for our congregation. This year, we will distribute water during the morning as part of the Village s Independence Day celebration in the center of the Village. Contact Lisa Goodale (LCGoodale@sbcglobal.net or ) if you can give an hour to help in greeting our friends and neighbors. Often, the weekly bulletin is full of uplifting information and not simply the order of the service for the day. Such was the case on June 19 Father s Day. The following Litany for Our Fathers is not only a beautiful piece of writing, but uplifting and all-inclusive of men: LET US PRAISE THOSE FATHERS WHO HAVE STRIVEN TO BALANCE THE DEMANDS OF WORK, MARRIAGE, AND CHILDREN WITH AN HONEST AWARENESS OF BOTH JOY AND SACRIFICE. LET US PRAISE THOSE FATHERS WHO, LACKING A GOOD MODEL FOR A FATHER, HAVE WORKED TO BECOME A GOOD FATHER. LET US PRAISE THOSE FATHERS WHO BY THEIR OWN ACCOUNT WERE NOT ALWAYS THERE FOR THEIR CHILDREN, BUT WHO CONTINUE TO OFFER THOSE CHILDREN, NOW GROWN, THEIR LOVE AND SUPPORT. LET US PRAY FOR THOSE FATHERS WHO HAVE BEEN WOUNDED BY THE NEGLECT AND HOSTILITY OF THEIR CHILDREN. LET US PRAISE THOSE MEN WHO HAVE NO CHILDREN, BUT CHERISH THE NEXT GENERATION AS IF THEY WERE THEIR OWN. LET US PRAISE THOSE MEN WHO HAVE FATHERED US IN THEIR ROLE AS MENTORS AND GUIDES. LET US PRAISE THOSE MEN WHO ARE ABOUT TO BECOME FATHERS; MAY THEY OPENLY DELIGHT IN THEIR CHILDREN. AND LET US PRAISE THOSE FATHERS WHO HAVE DIED, BUT LIVE ON OUR MEMORY AND WHOSE LOVE CONTINUES TO NURTURE US. AMEN. KIRK LOADMAN 7 P age
