Dear Friends, Pastor s Paragraphs Summer has arrived! And after the long snowy winter and cool spring we celebrate its arrival. School is out, summer camps and summer jobs have begun. One notices an increase of pedestrian and bicycle traffic moving through town and along Park Ave. toward the beach. One cannot miss the change in activity as persons enjoy these few months of warmth and sunshine. engagement with mission projects and fundraising efforts help maintain a sense of community. So- enjoy the summer months of fun and relaxation, and continue to include North Shore UMC in your summer planning. For the relationships we form as a church-community provide a means of support that will not change no matter what season we are presently in. Blessings, Pastor Glenna Note: June 30 to July 6 Rev. Brian Smith, Senior Pastor of Trinity UMC- Wilmette, is available for emergencies while NSUMC Clergy is away from the office. Please call (Church Office) With this change of activity comes a change in our church routines. There are fewer meetings, the Choir goes on hiatus, and the church building becomes quieter as weekday activities are suspended for the summer. Yet not activities at North Shore UMC cease. Worship services continue with special music provided each week by talented members and friends; gathering and sorting work for our successful Rummage Sale is ongoing, The Fellowship Committee s outing to Ravinia will be held July 18 th, we will once again serve the Soup Kitchen July 30 th, and we will be scheduling our Annual Pet Blessing for a Sunday in August. My point is, while summer may bring a change in routine; it doesn t signal a time to suspend church participation. Regular worship attendance is essential for continued spiritual growth and health. Gathering together for a time of fellowship, Page 1
June 8 th Confirmation Sunday 2014 Welcoming new members into the Body of Christ is always a happy time. Con hi David firmation Sunday is by far the most exhilarating expression of membership. Seeing young individuals take the official step into a life of involvement in the Church is thrilling and positive. On June 8 th, NSUMC welcomed four youth as full participants. A welcome-dinner is normally held the day before Confirmation Sunday. Below, are some photos of the happy event with the confirmands, theirs sponsors and parents. A few other pictures can also be found by visiting the church s Facebook page. Page 2
JULY 4 TH WATER OUTREACH NEWS Once again, the time has come to join in the outreach efforts to hand out the water to thirsty passersby as they on their way to the July 4 th firework display at the Glencoe beach. Kindly, contact John Martin or Marjorie Kemp, if you wish to join the group of volunteers, who year-after-year help make the church s presence in the community more evident. Fellowship COMMITTEE SUMMER Outing Friday night, July 18 th NSUMC A group of members and friends from NSUMC will gather in front of the restaurant on the north side of the park (by Martin Theater) at 6.00 p.m. on Friday night July 18 th for dinner and to attend the concert of one of America's greatest musical/movie. The CSO will play the magnificent score. Everyone looks forward to this summer outing! FALL-2014 ORGAN RECITAL Tomoko Shibuya, current organist at North Shore United Methodist Church, plans to play a solo organ recital at NSUMC s sanctuary late September or early October. The recital features music entirely from the High Baroque repertory (J.S. Bach and his contemporaries) to highlight the beautiful Baroque-style organ at NSUMC. Kindly, keep this FREE musical event in mind when planning your fall calendar. More specific information is forthcoming as the occasion nears. Page 3

Handel s Messiah Part I Mar. 22, 2015: The Music of Sibelius, Greig, Larrson, and Wiren May 17, 2015: Mahler s 4 th Symphony for 14 Instruments All concerts are performed in the sanctuary of North Shore UMC. Each concert beginning at 4:00 p.m. A reception is included in the price of the ticket. For more information visit the ensemble s website: Adult Forum News Nicky Kacena, sophomore at New Trier High School, shared his experience and the fine points of debating and being on the Debate team at the June 8th Forum. Nicky explained that there are several types of Debate styles - his favorite being the Lincoln/Douglas, a nationally recognized form of one-on-one debate; a style containing a complex set of rules and time limits. The debate topics are chosen by one organization, then distributed nationwide to participating high schools. Nicky shared that the content of the arguments, as well as the speed at which these arguments are presented, is part of the formula that is considered in the competition. Nicky demonstrated his fast speaking style, which is a talent developed in the coaching process. The speed lets the competitor maximize the amount of information given to support his/her argument in the few minutes of allotted time. Nicky debated at the nationals, placing 4 th in his division. The Forum was very well attended, and there were lots of questions from the audience, which Nicky answered thoughtfully with great clarity. We hope we can have the opportunity to observe a debate competition when the season begins again. Page 4
Graduates Recognition Sunday June 8 th, 2014 Each year, North Shore UMC recognizes those in the congregation who achieve a milestone in their educational life. David Figueredo (pictured above) was this year s single high school graduate. As is the custom of the church to provide an opportunity to high school graduates to reflect on the question what role has this church played in your life thus far, David shared from the pulpit his thoughts, and expressed his appreciation to this church for its support to him throughout the years. Several prayers were offered for all young graduates. Among these prayers, one stands out and is cited below: Dear God, we thank you for these graduates. We thank you not only for them, but also for their families, who have helped them on their way. Help them to open their hearts and minds to your leadership, so you Can guide them to the most wonderful life possible for them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Attention all musicians! As you know, the choir stops performing during the summer months, but the music program continues to run with special offerings from the many talented people in the congregation through the end of August. Therefore, to be considered to perform during the choir s time off, contact music director, Ed Kemp. Whether you sing or play an instrument, Mr. Kemp will try to include you wherever possible. Page 5

What is an Annual Conference? (As reported on the official website of the United Methodist Church - UMC.org) When one hears the term "annual conference," it could be to any one of three things. The annual conference is a (1) regional body, (2) an organizational unit AND (3) a yearly meeting. Many of these yearly meetings happen in the U.S. in May and June. [The Northern Illinois Annual Conference meets in June each year, with normal pastoral appointments beginning a month later on the first of July]. (1) Regional body The annual (also known as 'regional') conference is described by the church's Book of Discipline, as the "basic unit" of the church. In the United States, an annual conference may cover an entire state, only part of the state, parts of two or more states. There are also three missionary conferences in the United States, which rely upon the denomination as a whole for funding. The United States has 57 annual conferences, supervised by 46 bishops. There are 76 annual conferences in Africa, Europe, and the Philippines, which are supervised by 20 bishops. United Methodists in Africa, Europe and the Philippines call their comparable geographical division a central conference. (2 US EU is the annual conferences central office and fresh) Organizational body In the U.S., the annual conference has a central office and professional staff that coordinate and conduct ministry and the business of the conference. Likely there is a director of connectional ministries, a treasurer, a directors of program areas (such as camping), a communications director, and other staff as deemed appropriate for the annual conference, and as required by the Book of Discipline. Clergy and laypersons may also serve on conference boards, commissions and committees. (3) Annual Conference sessions Each year, all clergy members (and an equal number of lay members selected from the local churches) attend their Annual Conference s session meet together to worship, fellowship, and conduct the business of the conference. The meat may last 3-5 days. During these sessions, members of the conference hear reports of past and ongoing work; adopt future goals, programs and budgets; ordain clergy members as deacons and elders; and elect delegates to Jurisdictional and General Conferences (every 4 years). The conference bishop presides over these meetings. Page 7
