THE CHURCH CHIMES North Shore United Methodist Church January 2016 Pastor Paragraphs Dear Friends, Happy New Year! I trust you have all begun to rest and recharge from the many church community celebrations held during the Christmas and New Year Season. Celebrations and being in community together helps to define a church. By this I mean as we gather together for worship, as we work together on a service project or when we simply take the time to have fun and celebrate we become a witness to the God- within that is alive and unites us with one another. During my time of rest and recharging, I have been reading meditations by Henry Nouwen. His writings often focus on discovering Christ within the community, as we live out our baptismal call to love one another. Below is one such devotion I wish to share with you: Like a Large Mosaic Community is like a large mosaic. Each little piece seems so insignificant. One piece is bright red, another cold blue or dull green, another warm purple, another sharp yellow, another shining gold. Some look precious, others ordinary. Some look valuable, others worthless. Some look gaudy, others delicate. As individual stones, we can do little with them except to compare them and judge their beauty and value. When, however, all these little stones are brought together in one big mosaic portraying the face of Christ, who would ever question the importance of any one of them? If one of them, even the least spectacular one, is missing, the face is incomplete. Together in the one mosaic, each little stone is indispensable and makes a unique contribution to the glory of God. That s community, a fellowship of little people who together make God visible in the world. ~ Can You Drink the Cup? ~ May North Shore UMC continue to be a large mosaic reflecting a community of people who will make God visible as we enter into the New Year in ministry. Grace and Peace, Pastor Glenna

Thus, Advent Sunday is designated to prepare the Achurch buildings for such special birth, as well as for the many events preceding it such as concerts of 2

the North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble, the pageant, the congregation-wide Christmas luncheon and that most special of services, Christmas Eve. The Hanging of the Greens on Advent Sunday is a welcome tradition for all - young and old alike. Following are a few pictures of the 2015 beloved event. 3

A Baroque Christmas in Venice, Leipzig and London The North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble holds its performances in the sanctuary of North Shore United Methodist Church. The ensemble s concert season began this past November 29 Advent Sunday. As in the past, the orchestra s season began with a free family concert, Cookies, Cocoa, and Carols. They released a new album "Birds Say" this fall. For more information, please speak to Ellen Paseltiner. Paper copies of The Church Chimes may soon be discontinued The Church Chimes is the monthly newsletter of the North Shore United Methodist Church. This publication has been in existence for more than six decades. Currently, each church family receives a copy of the newsletter. For several years, in addition to the paper copy, an electronic copy of the newsletter appears on the church s website in tandem. On January 16, 2016, the Church Council will meet to discuss, among other subjects, whether or not paper copies of the newsletter should continue being mailed indiscriminately to all members. The cost of printing, producing, and mailing has increased over time manifold. The electronic copy (identical to the paper copy) renders the need for a mass number of paper Chimes null. The cost of the electronic document is minimal, and easily accessible to everyone - anywhere. A limited number of paper copies will continue to be available for those individuals without computers, as well as for the ministers to use as gifts of information to possible new members. As a member of the church, you are welcome and invited to join the meeting of the Church Council the morning of Saturday, January 16, 2016, and listen to the discussion. January communion change Regular monthly communion will not be held on the first Sunday, instead, we will celebrate the Eucharist on January 10. DINNER/MOVIE NIGHT This month's dinner/movie night is tentatively scheduled on January 15. As the time approaches the featured movie will be announced 5

Get Reacquainted With... By Ellen Paseltiner Walter Calhoun has been a member of North Shore United Methodist Church for over fifteen years. He started coming when his children Samantha and Daniel were in high school, and his daughter Samantha's group of friends including Christina Cohen, Ashley Brandt and Donna Stelmokas were going to church here. He met Pastor Carol Brown and decided to join. Walter grew up in Kenilworth where his family was the first African American family to live there. Walter says the impetus for moving to Kenilworth was that his parents could not afford to send all four of their children to the University of Chicago Lab School where his brother and sister were going. His mother did not appreciate segregation as a principle and decided to move away from the south side. It was 1963, and the Civil Rights Movement was underway. They found a woman who would sell to them privately in Kenilworth, thus not involving real estate agents and invoking the restrictive covenants against blacks living in the small village. Walter said that some the people in Kenilworth were welcoming and while some were fearful about their house investment if an African American family moved there. For the most part, when the family experienced racist behavior, there was great push back from the Kenilworth community and support for his family. He said many people were happy that his family had "broken the color line." Walter's mother was the first black woman in the "Chicago Sun-Times" city room. She also founded the "Chicago Reporter" with John McDermott that covered black and white racial issues from a statistical viewpoint. She and Walter's father met in college at Ohio State. They moved to West Virginia and then the south side of Chicago at 4800 S. Kimbark before their move to Kenilworth. Walter had a great time growing up in Kenilworth. His mother was Episcopal and grew up in Savannah, Georgia. His father was not religious but a spiritual man who would drive Walter to church and supported his mother's desire to attend. They went to the Church of the Holy Comforter, the Episcopal Church in Kenilworth, where Walter attended Sunday school, served as an altar boy and was confirmed. His sister married there. In high school, he fell away from going to church very much as he was very involved in sports at New Trier including four years of baseball, two years of football and two years of basketball. Walter says that he has always found great comfort in the church both when he was growing up as well as now. He finds it is a place for quiet reflection. He loves the hospitality at our church and the personal interactions that he has with fellow members. He is "overwhelmed by the friendliness" of everyone. He has had tremendous joy during his time of attending the church. He enjoys the opportunities to engage in outreach and mission such as teaching English as a Second Language and being involved with Habitat for Humanity through the Glencoe Interfaith Builders. Walter is also very active as an usher at church services. Having Walter as a member enriches all of our lives. Christmas Luncheon 6

Click insert One of the most delightful celebrations of the Advent season is the Congregation-wide Christmas Dinner, an occasion in which the members of the North Shore United Methodist Church come together to share a holiday meal in observance of the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. On Sunday, December 13, the Congregation was treated to a delicious meal one which for a long time had been sponsored by our friends Janet and Tim Fleming. A few years ago, Barbara Lepman, owner of the Glencoe restaurant An Apple a Day and close friend of the Flemings, decided to continue the tradition in honor of her departed friend Janet, by co-sponsoring the dinner with Tim. To this generosity, we owe what is certainly a most anticipated event during the year. Thank you, Barbara and Tim, for allowing us this glorious moment of spiritual unity in Christ as a church family. Above are a few pictures that show the festive atmosphere of the event many more can be seen by visiting the church's Facebook page. 7

The UMW Cookies and Ornament Exchange Party is another long-standing tradition, which adds to the festive a Advent season at North Shore United Methodist Church. The party is always held the Monday immediately following the pageant and the Congregational dinner in 2015, December 14. Bev Fetzer has hosted this party at her home for a number of years now. Thank you for your generosity, Bev. 9

God's Dream for Our World Each Sunday following Advent Sunday receives the name of the candle that is lit in the Advent wreath for that particular day. The wreath holds five candles three purple, one rose color, and one white which is positioned in the center. Each candle represents a different aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord on Christmas Day. The rose-colored candle is lit on the third Sunday of the Advent season and it represents shepherds. It is called the JOY candle. On December 13, the children and youth of the North Shore United Methodist Church presented their version of the century-old story of the birth of Christ. This year's pageant was entitled "God's Dreams for Our World". As it has been for many years now, Rev. Dr. Barbara Javore, youth and children ministries director, wrote and guided the extravaganza to success. Many thanks should also be given to Ellen Bryant, who year after year surprises us with beautiful, up-to-date costumes her imagination and seamstress talents make decade- old costumes look new for each pageant. Musical director Tomoko Shibuya gives her talent freely, rounding up what is always a very successful event for the education department of the church. ************** 10

T he North Shore Chamber Arts Ensemble presented its annual free family concert Cookies, Cocoa & Carols on Advent Sunday, November 29, The well-attended concert was both a musical and social success. The music represented not only the Christian and Jewish traditions, but also some secular carols. As the name of the concert indicates, cookies abounded and the delicious aroma of cocoa filled the air. Following are some photos of the location a number of other pictures may be seen by accident scene the churches Facebook page. 11
