The Church will be closed at 10:00am. OPENING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR St. Denis - St. Columba School opens September 4th. WELCOME BACK! Some of you may have heard the sad news of Sr. Laurie Marie s recent transfer from St. Denis - St. Columba. For the upcoming school year, Sister will be teaching in a school in upstate New York. We thank Sister Laurie for her service to us and wish her God s many blessings in her new school. We warmly welcome Erin Pontez, a graduate of St. Denis - St. Columba, who will be teaching Second Grade, Jane Fazi, who will be teaching Gym, Margarita Strong, who will be teaching Spanish, and Alycia Scarpelli, who will be the Teacher aide in Grades 2-3. We are happy that they will be joining our faculty and staff and wish them God s many graces and blessings in their ministry here with us! Our maintenance staff has worked very hard this summer to prepare for the new school year. As always, they have done a phenomenal job and continue to work to ensure that everything is in tip - top shape! In the midst of all the summer preparations, they also Assisted with the renovation of the faculty room, a Girl Scout Medal project. We are so blessed to have such dedicated and hardworking staff! All are welcome to attend the annual Opening School Mass of the Holy Spirit on Friday, September 5th at 10:00am. From Father Michael: With the school year right around the corner, I would like to share with you my thoughts about the care and governance of our parish. In the Archdiocese of New York, each parish is a Corporation with Cardinal Dolan as the Chair, the Vicar General Bishop Walsh as the Vice - Chair, the Pastor/Administrator as Secretary and the two Parish Trustees. I look forward to working with David Legare and James O Connor. Each parish must have a Financial Council. The two trustees are ex - officio members and other members are appointed by the Pastor/Administrator. I am delighted to learn that St. Columba already has a fine Financial Council and I look forward to working with them. I plan to have monthly Monday Staff Meetings with the Priests, Deacons, Sister Kathleen, Sister Marie and Gary Bartilucci. I plan to have a Yearly Day of Reflection with the entire staff, including secretaries and custodians. This will likely be at Mt. Alvernia immediately at the end of the school year. This will enable us to discuss the previous year and set goals for the coming year. I also plan to convene a Parish Council. In the past, the Council was comprised of the heads of parish organizations twice a year, in September and March. I propose that the new Parish Council be comprised of men and women, including two teens, chosen by lot to serve a 3 year term (teens 1 year), as well as ex - officio members such as the trustees, priests, deacons, Sister Marie, Sister Kathleen and Gary Bartilucci. Parishioners who are registered, who actively attend Mass and who received all their Sacraments will be invited to submit their names for consideration, or their names may be submitted by fellow parishioners. Meetings would be held on one Monday each month in October, November, December, February, April, May & June. More on this later. But as you see, I want to work together with you to ensure that St. Columba will continue to be a faithful, active and vibrant parish. On a personal note, I thank you most sincerely for your kind and warm welcome. Each day I am feeling more at home. I am delighted to be with you, and I look forward to serving you in the months and, if it please God, years ahead! CONGRATULATIONS! Sincerely, Linda Hunt - SVDP THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The reception of Sacraments for Catholics, i.e. Holy Communion and/or Confirmation, as well as inquiring about the Catholic Faith for those who are not Catholic, can be accomplished through a process called The RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA). It has its roots in the early Church and is a faith process that will prepare adults for full reception into the Catholic Church while answering their questions and supporting them on their personal journey to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a process of prayer, discussion, study and celebration for: Adults who are not baptized and have a general curiosity about the Catholic Church. Adults who are baptized Catholics, but are in need of Sacramental preparation for Eucharist or Confirmation. Adults who are not Catholic and are married to Catholics and attend Mass and other services/activities regularly, and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith. Adults who have children who are preparing to celebrate Sacraments and wish to celebrate them as well. The desire to learn about the Catholic faith is a sign of the Holy Spirit at work. The RCIA process recognizes that conversion begins by the Holy Spirit and is an ongoing process. It respects each individual s response to this journey of faith and therefore is conducted in four periods so that participants may freely choose to enter into deeper study and faith sharing along the way.
