3 PARISH NEWS: Natural Family Planning Awareness Week July 19th July 26th Each year the USCCB dedicates a week July as National Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week. The dates of NFP Awareness Week (July 19th July 26th) highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae. The encyclical beautifully articulates respect for God s design for authentic love through the gift of human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feasts of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. Married Couples who use NFP report many benefits including: better communication between spouses, increased emotional maturity, deeper understanding of each other s bodies and growth and respect for Gods gift of fertility. Register anyway and if needed, we will work on transferring the student to a different day. However, late registration means that it may not be possible to accommodate your request because classes on a particular day may be booked to capacity. You help us help you by getting your registration completed early. This means registering online at AND making a tuition payment by mail or by stopping in the Religious Education office Monday - Thursday between 9am and 3pm. (When we receive payment, even a modest partial payment, we process the online registration.) NOTE: The office is closed on Fridays Our annual Ministry Fair will be held October 3-4. This is a heads up to all Organizations and Programs to put the date on your calendar and make plans now to participate. Our Ministry Fair is an excellent opportunity for our parishioners to find out about our Parish and Tri - Parish (with St. Denis & St. Kateri) Programs and Activities. SAVE THE DATE! 4 Our Youth Ministry Board is holding our first Midnight Run on Wednesday, July 22. ( We leave St. Columba at 8pm and return by 3am). Midnight Run is a non - profit organization in Dobbs Ferry that reaches out to the homeless in NYC. Midnight Run schedules and assigns groups to stop where homeless men and women can receive assistance such as food and clothing. More importantly, it is an opportunity to meet the homeless and treat them as we would treat Christ. Our Midnight Run is open to the teens ( 8th grade graduates and up) of our parish. Adult drivers are needed as well as assistance with clothing sorting. Adults should call the rectory to sign up. Teens sign up at Clothing Sort Mondays. NOTE: Financial Donations needed to help us purchase supplies for the Run. Can you help? Place your donation in an envelope marked Midnight Run and drop it in the collection. Thank You! CLOTHING DONATIONS NEEDED Drop Off - Weekend during Mass - July 18/19 at School Cafeteria Used clothing must be in good condition and washed! Durable Men s Pants - blue jeans preferred - sizes 32 and above, please mark size on each (e.g. 36X30) using masking tape. Men s Short Sleeve Shirts - medium to extra large - please mark size ( md, lg, 1x etc.) using masking tape. Men s Shorts with pockets preferred. Sneakers - put together with masking tape - sizes Sweat Shirts - dark colors preferred especially hoody s - medium to extra large. New Men s Tube Socks, New Men s Underwear - jockey style size 32-42, New Tee Shirts ( medium to extra large), Baseball caps, backpacks & belts. Women s Clothing - we see limited number of women. Some women s clothing is needed as above. Please - NO DRESS CLOTHES. NO CHILDREN S CLOTHING! Clothing Sorting Days - Monday, July 20 at 7:00pm in the cafeteria. Volunteers needed. Teens who wish to go on the Run must attend at least one clothing sort! Toiletry Items Needed: All Travel Sized ONLY: toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, deodorant, shampoo, razor, shaving cream, soap. Drop off your items during the clothing donation days. Do not put into kits - we will take care of that. Vacation Time Summer time gives your priests and opportunity for vacation. Father Chris will be away until July 29. Father Michael will be away July 29 - August 16. This includes leading the Parish Pilgrimage to Italy. SUMMER CHOIR Come join us for the summer! Ever think of MAYBE singing or playing in church? Summer schedules are usually light ( no homework!) so now is a good time to try it! Join us at: THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The reception of Sacraments for Catholics, i.e. Holy Communion and/ or Confirmation, as well as inquiring about the Catholic Faith for those who are not Catholic, can be accomplished through a process called The RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA). It has its roots in the early Church and is a faith process that will prepare adults for full reception into the Catholic Church while answering their questions and supporting them on their personal journey to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a process of prayer, discussion, study and celebration for: Adults who are not baptized as Catholics or in another Christian faith and have a general curiosity about the Catholic Church. Adults who are baptized Catholics, but are in need of Sacramental preparation for Eucharist or Confirmation. Adults who are not Catholic and are married to Catholics and attend Mass and other services/activities regularly, and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith. Adults who have children who are preparing to celebrate Sacraments and wish to celebrate them as well. The desire to learn about the Catholic faith is a sign of the Holy Spirit at work. The RCIA process recognizes that conversion begins by the Holy Spirit and is an ongoing process. It respects each individual s response to this journey of faith and therefore is conducted in four periods so that participants may freely choose to enter into deeper study and faith sharing along the way. Persecution of Christians The plight of Christians around the world, especially in the Middle East, has become a major catastrophe. Massive numbers of Christians are being subjected to violence, displacement, and even death, explicitly because of their faith. Yet there is little attention being paid in the West, and few governments are saying anything in response. However far way, we are still impacted by the sufferings of our fellow Christians; we are all one human family. Catholic social teaching calls us to stand in solidarity. The Middle East is the birthplace of Christianity; it is the land of Jesus life, death and resurrection. It s time to take action!
