2 2 PASTOR AND CHURCH COUNCIL A Message from Pastor Rick: One of the very best ministries in the ELCA is AFFIRM, our synod s annual event for youth who have completed grades 6-12 and for those in their first year or two of college. Not only does AFFIRM teach youth in areas like worship planning, leadership, outreach, and discipleship; it has also helped raise leaders in our synod and ELCA. Many of the youth who later go on to serve as staff members have become pastors or associates in ministry. I can think of at least a dozen pastors I know who would claim AFFIRM as an important part of their journey. Countless lay people will also tell you how this event has strengthened their faith. Several leaders from other synods have visited our event and tried to take back with them exactly what we are doing. For some reason, they can t seem to duplicate what we ve been doing for what is now about 50 years. In some ways, I guess I am an AFFIRM junkie. Since 1983, I have either attended this event (or one of its predecessors) or served on staff 28 times. When Jody & I were first married, she even served on staff as one of our nurses; I think in part to see why I was excited to be away from home for a week. I usually tell the folks in charge that I am willing to serve, but will give up my spot if they need someone else to be a staff member. This year, however, I really want to be there. AFFIRM is a bit of a family affair for me. Both of my parents were on staff in the 1960 s. Now, a third generation will be going. Drew & Noah will be part of what I think we will be a record crowd from St. Paul as attendees. 11 of our members (8 youth & 3 college students) will join me and 300 or so of our closest teenage friends for a week of learning and growing. I hope that all of us will have our relationship with God deepened by this great week of learning. Please pray for all of all of us and all who will be present at AFFIRM. Be sure to ask our young people about their experience. Peace, Pastor Rick The St. Paul Church Council meets monthly on the 3rd Monday at 7:30pm. 3 3 PASTOR AND CHURCH COUNCIL A Message From Jan Hanes Council President Dear Friends of St. Paul We at St. Paul have so much for which to be thankful. We all have the opportunity to celebrate God s work in so many ways. We should be grateful that a member of our church, Rachel Kaufman Patterson has received felt called by God to begin the process toward ordained ministry and attend Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Her husband, Ethan, will also be attending Trinity to work on a Master of Theological Studies in hope to then earn a PhD. and teach. I hope that all of you are like me in thinking that we need to support her in any way we can. I say again, what a blessing for all of us and our church. There are so many people in our church that do many things. I cannot mention all of those, but I will thank a couple: Marsha Wynn for her support of our choir and the bell choir, and Leigh Caldwell for her great job in the kitchen especially in preparing meals for Faith & Family. We are getting into summer vacation, so all have a safe time no matter where you are going. Do not forget Vacation Bible School for all; is June 5-9, at 6pm. See all of you there. I leave with a little message: The happiest people don t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything. Do your best; let GOD do the rest.
