3 Message from Pastor Cyndi: My Friends, The news of late has been overwhelming. Like many of you I so want to turn away and not look anymore. It s hard to believe that who we are and what we are can make a difference, can have an impact. Margaret Mead reminds us that we ought, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Scripture reminds that a light shining in the dark is not consumed or eaten up by the dark, but continues to shine, continues to give light and hope to those who see it. We are in the middle of a sermon series on Christ and Culture, examining what the Church, as a community of faithful Jesus followers, has to say to the common culture. Much of our culture was shaped and formed by Christians, but there are still some places where the Church speaks a counter-cultural word and this word is important. It is significant. It does change things. We, as those who are committed to following Christ, change things, just by being faithful, just by being who and what we are. In a culture that tells us busy is better and that a full schedule keeps us out of trouble, we are called to a Sabbath practice, an intentional disconnecting from all things that would distract us from the love of God, from the love of family, friends, and neighbor. We are called to remember that the world will not stop turning if we cease our endless striving, that God has all things in hand, and that we can rest in God s assurances. In a culture that tells us we must be powerful and protect ourselves, we must be ready to defend ourselves against attack at all times, our faith asks us to be peacemakers. We are blessed with a different way of being, one that promotes peace and unity, not division and enmity. If our scripture tells us to treat those who will not reconcile with us as gentiles and tax collectors (Matthew 18:17) then we would do well to remember how Jesus treated gentiles and tax collectors. Perhaps we ought to invite them to dinner, share a meal, hear each others stories. In a culture that celebrates those that beat out their competition, who are striving to be the best IN the world, we are called to be the best FOR the world, to raise up those around us, to seek to empower, inspire, and nurture those around us. In a culture that tells us happiness is dying with the most toys, we are called to the full, abundant path of living with meaning and purpose. We are not called to live contracted in fear that we will not have enough, but to live from the freedom of faith in God s providence. There is enough. You are enough. Our world can feel turbulent and chaotic. It can feel like we are not big enough or strong enough, to have an impact, but each and every day we do. In every outstretched hand, in every kind word, in every charitable act, in so many small and large ways, we make a difference. Every act of kindness, of love, of hope makes a difference. There is so much that is truly, deeply wonderful about our church and the light that together we share with the world. It makes a difference. You make a difference. Peace, Cyndi Wunder The darkness seems overwhelming. We are a people of faith who trust the promise that there is a light no amount of darkness can extinguish. Look for the light. Be the light some one else is looking for. Rev. Steven Koski 3

5 Sunday School Sunday School time has begun! All students K-12 are welcome to join us after fellowship until 11:15 each Sunday morning. We will gather for a brief welcome and prayer before separating into our K-5 and 6-12 grade classrooms with dedicated, weekly curricula. Sunday School will be held each Sunday until late May, with exceptions for scheduled intergenerational activities. If you have an interest in teaching or participating as an adult discussion leader, please see the schedule below and speak with a member of the Christian Education committee. You can also use the sign-up forms in Fellowship Hall. In order to provide consistency for the little ones, we are asking the teacher volunteers to commit to a 12-week session for the K-5 classroom. The 6-12 grade teacher assignments will be week-byweek, as in the past. See below for the current schedule of teachers and planned intergenerational activities. Answer these few questions below: Where do you buy your gas and coffee at? Where do you buy your food at (groceries and essentials between visits---like milk, bread, fruit, etc)? Where do you go out to eat or shop for gifts (Christmas, birthday, anniversaries, etc)? How much do you spend on each of these areas in ONE week? How do you pay for these regular expenses? Cash/Debit Card/Credit Card/ Gift Card (Circle One) Why do you pay this way? If you use a credit card, is there enough money in the bank WHEN you spend it to cover the costs of it? With the use of the SCRIP PROGRAM, you can spend these exact expenses AND the church will be able to get the rebates to use for GOD'S WORK. You only need to change how you pay for the items. Buy the gift cards through the church and watch the money grow. It is like getting paid cash to do what you already do. This means stretching your money to go even further than you could possibly go...because God is the person putting it into action. God has provided this income to you to help supply your needs. He is a great God who knows what you need... even before you know it! Do not keep this money for yourself! Give it to God so he can see your obedience to him and bless you for it! He does not need the funds but he needs to see that you love him and are willing to give back to him. Use him and his church as your channel to reach others. But as Malachi says "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed me! But you say, "In what way have we robbed You?" In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now on this," says the Lord of hosts, "If I will not 5 open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it." Sign up for the Scrip program today. There is more information out online at shopwithscrip.com and more than 700 vendors who are willing to give rebates from 1-20%. You can start out with only doing one week at a time, if it helps get you used to the change. With the holiday shopping season coming up soon, it should be an easier transition for using the gift cards...but do not only use it for special occasions--use it for everyday expenses too! For those who are a little more high tech, there are easy ways to have the info right on your smart phone for a shorter wait time AND the ability to pay right from your checking account (with a pin/code). Call me any time about the program. My cell phone is Like Romans 14:12 says "So then EACH of us shall give account of himself to God." What will God say about how you have handled what he has given you? -Martha Ammann Sat., Oct. 7th Reach Out Lodi is currently in the planning a walk to be held the Saturday October (7th) at 9 a.m., rain or shine. We will have a 1 mile and a 2 mile route, with fun stops along the way, as well as games and refreshments after the walk at the Reach Out Lodi Center. We are reaching out to each of the local churches that have helped out in the past with the various Crop Walks, hoping that you will be on board with helping us with this walk. continued on page 7

6 Reach Out Lodi will be presenting its first "Be a Super Hero Walk" on Saturday October 7th at 9 am, rain or shine! 1 or 2 mile walk, beginning and ending at the Reach Out Lodi Community Center Super hero costumes or t-shirts are encouraged but not necessary Games and refreshments provided at the Reach Out Lodi Community Center following the walk For more information contact ROL at or visit our Facebook page, or web page Walk packets can be picked up at the Reach Out Lodi facility, First Weber Office, at Associated Bank or can be downloaded from our facebook or website page All donations will be used for the ROL Community Store to benefit our friends and families in need 6

7 continued from page 5 Our walk is titled "Be A Super Hero" with the intent of getting families, churches, organizations, businesses, and individuals acquainted with, and involved in our mission of helping out our friends and neighbors in need. We are promoting costumes for the walk, and will have some activities that will help participants understand the importance of helping to sustain what we have accomplished so far at ROL. All proceeds will go to the Reach Out Lodi Community Store. As in the past with the crop walk, we are hoping that the various churches will support this walk by promoting it within your congregation as well as having some opportunity for the members interested to sign up through their church. Maybe you would even like to participate as a church team? We are asking individuals/teams to gather donations for their participation in the walk, and in lieu of a registration fee, we will be asking each team to bring two items to help stock our store, off a list that we will provide, of items we are most in need of. We are very excited about this walk and have lots of great ideas to make this a fun event for all. Thank you, Victoria Lane Reach Out Lodi, Managing Director reachoutlodi@yahoo.com Islam and Christianity Class Have you ever wished you knew more about Islam and the Muslim faith? This will be an informal discussion class. There is a study book involved if you wish to have one, or just come and join in on the conversation. Pray about how you can step-up. Please join us on October 8th for Stewardship Sunday where we will pledge our support for our church and then celebrate with a Pot Luck Dinner.
