1 T h e S p i r e Aug. / Sept Hospitality- Integral to God Again, this summer, we had two successful mission trips here in Evansville. A kitchen floor was replaced. Wheel chair ramp rebuilt. Exterior home painted. Home landscaped, ceiling and bathroom repaired. Plus, several yards that had become overgrown were cleaned up. Thank you Centenary UMC for making these projects possible. Yes, even though we as a church did not do the work, Centenary made all these jobs possible and homeowners happy. Both mission teams, from Alexandria KY and Pennsylvania, raved about our church s hospitality. They greatly enjoyed the meals, the fellowship (they wanted the cooks to eat with them), the facilities, and the people of our church. Hospitality is an often overlooked, but completely vital aspect to the Christian life and God s kingdom. In Mark 6:7-13, Jesus sends the disciples out two by two and tells them, take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. Plus, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. Thus, the disciples mission was predicated on the necessity of hospitality. As they traveled the disciples would need shelter, food, warmth, and provisions. They were dependent upon hospitality. Plus, in this passage for those receiving the good news and healing, the precursor to this ministry was their hospitality and openness to these strange disciples. Thus, undergirding everything is hospitality and an open spirit. Another favorite example of the power of hospitality in God is Mark 10: This is the famous rich, young ruler passage. This rich man turned down following Jesus because he had many possessions. Next to the shocked disciples, Jesus states, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Finally Jesus, tells the disciples, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sister, mothers and children, and fields How is such a thing possible? It s called hospitality in God. The rich man could not give up his own stuff. Thus, he did not live a life created by hospitality. However, the disciples who left everything discovered the hundredfold of brothers and sisters in the family of God and a hundredfold of homes and fields because of the hospitable nature of God s kingdom. Simply put, hospitality is integral to the Christian faith. Our hospitality to God in our lives and hearts, hospitality offered and received from Christian to Christian (church to church), and the hospitality of God s kingdom entering into a world like ours, all are needed for God s kingdom to flourish. So thank you for your hospitality to these two mission teams, homeowners, and the community of Evansville. Without us being open and willing to offer and receive hospitality, God s work does not get done. Again, thank you. Continue to open your life and spirit up in God s hospitality. 2 Lifetouch We are in the process of preparing a new pictorial directory. It is important to have an up-to-date directory as new families come into the church. It s a way of being connected to one another, which is a necessity if we are to have a sense of community. Do you know the names of the people sitting around you? We are building a tool that will put names with faces. Therefore, we are asking everyone to participate! Even if you don t wish to buy any pictures, we need you to show up and be added! Each family will receive a complimentary 8x10 photograph of their directory image, as well as a complimentary printed and/or mobile directory. You will see a table in the narthex where people are helping register others for their photo sessions. This signup service will be available for the next few Sundays. You may also sign up online for a photo session through our website, although that option is not available on Sundays. Be aware that this directory will be different! This new directory will be a convenient book size, and there will also be a mobile directory that you can get an app for! Photos will be taken on September 20, 21, and 22. Sign up! Thanks to all of you who helped take care of our visiting mission teams. The following letter shows how much your hospitality was appreciated, Centenary! Dear Centenary, On behalf of our Mission team and committee, I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for another amazing week in Evansville! As Evelyn mentioned, we felt right at home from the moment we walked in the door. The meals, as always, were wonderful! It was a special gift to come back after a day of work and have a delicious meal prepared for us. Such great food, such welcoming people, and such warm fellowship! I don t think we re supposed to come back from our mission trip weighing more than when we left, but for some reason we always do! You have a very special group of folks there at Centenary! Please extend our thanks to everyone who fed us such delicious food and made us feel so welcome. The projects seemed a good fit for our team, and we appreciated the opportunity to work with Colette and Arden. Special thanks to Brian and you for finding projects where we could use our skills, for your moral support and for keeping us on track all week. Your willingness to provide communion for us was the perfect addition to a week of spiritual growth in service for our group. Thanks again for this mission opportunity and for your congregation s dedication to serving your community. 5 I realize that as we reluctantly hand our kids over to new teachers, dorms, coaches, and even their own apartments, we can simultaneously hand them over to the complete, unchanging, infinite, protection of God! He can and will be there to pick up the slack for us weary, anxious parents. We can trust Him to always be there when we cannot. Whether our kids are coloring at the firstgrade art table or 500 miles away from us on a college campus, we can trust that Almighty God is watching over them and He will never leave them nor forsake them (see Hebrews 13:5). Members of Georgia s Girls and the We Care Committee are in the process of making mats for the homeless out of used plastic bags. These thick woven mats serve as a barrier between the user and the ground. They are also lightweight and transportable. Finally, this is a great use of recyclable plastic! Can you help us by donating your used plastic bags? There is a box in the FLC in the hall near the kitchen marked Plastic Bags. Please place your donations there! Thank you! What Is The Purpose of Sunday School? ~ Sunday Schools were first started in the 1780s in England to provide education to working children. Children and young people worked six days a week. Sundays were their only day off. Clergymen supported the founding of Sunday schools which taught not only the Bible, but also reading, writing and cyphering. These Sunday schools were the only educational resource for many of the children of this time. Now all children have schooling available to them to teach them reading, writing, etc. However, the teaching of the Bible cannot be neglected. Passing on the teachings and practices of Christ is the work of the church. While parents are the first teachers, Sunday Schools purposely provide a setting where Christian truths, morals, and principles of faith are taught. Sunday Schools are very important. Teachers sometimes work hard to teach things that kids find unimportant. To be able to continue on with their efforts, teachers have to have a sense of the importance of what they are doing. We are looking for people who not only understand the value of Sunday School, but are also willing to help carry on this ministry. The lawyer asked the senior if he d like to play a little game. The older man was tired, and he told the lawyer he only wanted to sleep. But the lawyer insisted the game was a lot of fun. Here s how it works, he said. I ll ask you a question. If you can t come up with the answer, you have to give me a dollar. Then it s your turn to ask me one. But if I can t answer it, I have to give you $20. The senior figured if he just got this over with, maybe he could get some sleep. So he agreed to play. The first question from the lawyer was How far apart are the earth and the moon? The senior stayed completely silent, reached for a dollar, and gave it to the lawyer. Then he said, My turn. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward? The lawyer was stumped. He thought and thought. He tried to remember all the riddles he knew. He searched every corner of his brain. He even cheated and asked the flight attendants and other passengers. Finally he gave up. He woke up the older man and gave him a twenty. The senior stuffed the twenty in his coat and went immediately back to sleep. The lawyer couldn t stand it. He woke up the older man and said, I have to know. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward? The senior got out his wallet, gave the lawyer a dollar, and went back to sleep.
