Enjoy This week we have a great chance to pray with some of our friends/saints in glory and hopefully read up on them. Monday (11) is St. Benedict and St. Oliver Plunkett day, two wonderful saints to support our call for religious and spiritual freedom. Tuesday (12) is our first celebration of Ss Louis and Zélie Martin (parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux)--I was blessed to pray at their beautiful shrine in Lisieux just last month. Wednesday (13) is the first year anniversary of my father's death, even though not officially known as a saint yet, why not pray for the intentions of all parents of priests and seminarians. Thursday (14) brings us the Lily of the Mohawks, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, who said, "I am not my own, I have given myself to Jesus. He must be my only love." Friday (15) is the faithful follower of St. Francis, St. Bonaventure, who only wanted to love: "That heart is free which is held by no love other than the love of God." Saturday (16) is an awesome day to lift up Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the actual birthday of a dear friend, St. Clare (born Chiara Offreduccio in 1194), who has helped lead me in my priesthood and brought me direction after my father's death when I went to Assisi. Please prayerfully consider it. If you or your family would like to pray with the Crucifix for vocations to the priesthood, religious life, married or single life, please call the rectory. We will place your name on the list so the Crucifix can be presented to you during Mass on a given weekend or picked up at another convenient time in the sacristy or parish office. Brenda and Dennis Murphy received the Vocation Crucifix this weekend. Due to Independence Day, we will have the collection for in next week s bulletin. Jesus what must I do to inherit eternal life? You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself This weekend our congregation is once again recipients of the annual Anointing of the Sick Mass. People of infirmity come to the Saturday Mass, register and receive a blessing from the priests to acknowledge the suffering in their lives. This awesome Sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus to confer inward grace. Every year when this is announced, there is a personal period of discomfort. Does a person have to be dying to receive the Sacrament? Catechism answers as resounding, NO. You may know people who could use the anointing, but don t feel deserving, or defer to be called out in front of the community. The special graces unites the sick person to the passion of Christ for his good and that that of the whole church. We convince ourselves that struggles which could be true sickness may not qualify in this blessing. Heartaches which break our everyday life, which weigh us down, so much that it makes it almost impossible to lift our head up, much less our eyes toward the heavens. The impediment of such a struggle keeps us from the love that God has in store for us and keeps us at arms length from those closest to us who long to embrace us and ease our secret burdens. If anyone carries a secret burden of this description, look around in the pews, in the store, neighborhood, on our jobs, and think of how many of us need the mercy of Jesus and the Samaritan whose compassion lifted the traveler s life spiritually, emotionally, and physically. We are to love the neighbor as ourselves. We are THE Neighbor. Ask for God s spiritual healing, his bountiful love and mercy so we can help others; Go and Do likewise. The opportunity of the Sacrament of Anointing of the sick is to receive the important comfort of the Church. Anointing does not mean healing. Healing is subject to God s will ( James 4:14-15). It does not mean that disease or infirmity reflects lack of faith ( 1 Tim 5:23). The apostle s advice to his fellow s suffering from physical (stomach) ailment is not to pray harder, but also to consider managing through medical means. This weekend, continuing in this Blessed Year of Mercy, we incorporate the Corporal ( physical), spiritual and works ( action) to fulfill God s grace, to lead to the restoration of health if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul. ( CCC 1532) Maybe this year is not your individual calling to receive the anointment of the sick, but pray for all those who request it, for those who need it, and contemplate the value of it in the future, because everyone is crippled in some way. Wouldn t it be great if the gift of health, be it physical, spiritual or emotional be granted to each of us? God be with us Each week during this Year of Mercy, look for a new message from our Social Action Commission on ways that we can bring this Year of Mercy closer to our hearts. Remember, there is always a great need for blood. Please take the time to give this special gift of life Helping the Homeless Collection bins will be in the Narthex for toilet paper donations on the weekend of July for Springtime of Hope. Springtime of Hope is an organization that seeks out the homeless in our community and works to meet their needs and improve their situation. Mark your calendar Kickball July 17 Remember playing kickball in school? Now you can relive those days Kickball evenings are scheduled for next Sunday, July 17 th and Sunday, August 7 th at 6:30p.m. on the St. Francis baseball field. Bring the whole family: children, parents, and even the grandparents. Anyone 5 and under always gets on base Come welcome new parishioners and meet new families.
