2 Pastor s Thoughts June 2015 Keeping the Faith While gathering some info for the stained glass windows for our First Friday art walk participation (please see Evangelism news), one of our members came across the following July 24, 1867, entry in the historical notebook from : But not all was serious to the eyes of children or grown-ups who still recall the struggle of two laymen to place the Sunday School bookcase where each thought it should be. When the superintendent entered and found it proudly occupying the front of the room, he straightway carried it forward, whereupon its creator carried it forward, and again it was returned to the rear, until at last, on its forward way, the two men meeting in the aisle, came to the tug of war. Back and forth swayed the cupboard, until finally the superintendent s strength prevailed, and it remained in the back of the church. Ah, yes. Conflict in the church. in In the back of my head, a Billy Joel song from my childhood surfaced: The good ole days weren t always good, and tomorrow ain t as bad as it seems. Ain t that the truth? Some days, all I can hear about is how great the church used to be how full the Sunday school was, how many people were in worship, how much better everybody got along. And yet, here s evidence that maybe it wasn t all sunshine. The Session is reading a book by Ken McFayden, a professor at Union Theological Seminary, called, Strategic Leadership for Change: Facing Our Losses, Finding Our Future. In it are the reminders that being the people of God does not mean trying to grow a church in some attempt to bring back the good ol days it means faithfully seeking to share Christ s love, deepening our faith and more fully serving others. If this is what the congregation seeks as a church, maybe people will want to come along and join in. It involves fully recognizing our losses and actively seeking to change in ways that helps us be a relevant and loving congregation that loves God and loves others. May God guide us and help us to be a faithful witness. In Christ, Jess 2

After perfect attendance to each monthly meeting, a service project, monthly homework assignments, meeting and praying with confirmation partners, six worship reports, and a weekend retreat, these students have now accepted the promises made at their baptisms for their own and professed their faith in Jesus Christ. A big thanks to our Confirmation Partners: Marcia Brown, Herb DamSteegt, Sandy DeSelle, Dudley Mehltretter, Kris Morgan, Pam Odorizzi, DeAnn Richards, Beth Sokol, and Jean Spataro. 6 (continued from page 4) is a Christian housing ministry which provides homes to people who have had little hope of owning their own homes. The note is on the bulletin board in the sanctuary. Please consider being a one-on-one prayer partner with a member of the team. Please consider being a one-onone prayer partner with one member of the team. Speak with Marcia Brown ( ) or Pastor Jessica and they will give you your prayer partner assignment. The crews have been hard at work and much has been accomplished. Dry wall is up and cleaning needs to be done before painting can happen. If you want to stop by and help out, bring some supplies. A broom, dust pan, rags and a shop vac if you have one would be appreciated. The plans as this is being written is for clean up to be scheduled for May and if the community center part is cleaned, painting could start after Memorial Day. Check with Jim Schmiedlin for details. Remember to put August 30 as the Open House for the facility - 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Food, music, tours, cookies, games for the kids. Everyone is invited. The plan to provide Wednesday lunches for the workers did not work out as we had hoped. The crews work was never definite enough to plan ahead for the cooks. Sometimes they couldn't work on Wednesday and sometimes there was not a need for a large crew. Thanks to those who volunteered. Become a PRESBYWHEELIAN Do you love cycling? Or even just tooling along on your bicycle? You too could be a Presbywheelian! This is a group of Madison-area Presbyterians who take part in the July 18 Bike for Boys and Girls Club. This group has grown over the last few years to 75 riders (it s a ride, not a race), raising over $15,000. You can ride 8, 25, or 50 miles. You can learn more online at or by looking up the Presbywheelians on Facebook or contacting Pastor Jess. Lost and Found A Fitbit was found in the women s restroom after the garage sale.
