Their parents and Godparents speak on their behalf, promising to raise them in the church. This form of baptism illustrates especially well that baptism is effective through God s action, not through our own. It helps us remember that we do not earn our status as baptized Children of God, nor do we prove that our faith is strong enough. Instead, God chooses us in baptism and claims us as children. Baptism blesses us by God s grace alone. There are other methods of baptism that illustrate other aspects of the Christian teachings such as being washed in the blood of the lamb or having died to sin and been raised to a new life in Christ. In all of these, God reaches out in love to claim more members of the family of faith. We hope to have a baptism at St. Timothy s in October Saylor Kramer. Saylor will not answer the questions asked in the baptism liturgy, but that is not the end of baptism. Anointed with the Holy Spirit, she will grow in faith as she is brought to worship, taught the Bible, and nurtured in the church. When she is older and understands the grace in which she has grown, she will be invited to affirm her baptism, that is, to speak for herself before the congregation and say that she believes God s promises and chooses to continue in the Christian faith. The rite of Affirmation of Baptism is more commonly known as Confirmation. On Reformation Sunday, October 28 th, Jolena Wallace and Bradley Walsh will affirm their baptism. They have been studying for Confirmation with Frank Bernhardt, and now meet with Pastor Linda on Sunday mornings to prepare for questions before the congregation. Please plan to join in this celebration, reserving the date now, to show support for these two young people and to hear their witness. And may God bless you whenever you renew your baptismal vows! God keep you in peace, Pastor Linda Anderson

Saint Timothy s Lutheran Church 1301 Mill Street, Camden, SC Phone: (803) office@sttimslutheran.com Pastor: The Rev. Linda Anderson Parish Secretary: Christy Escalante Director of Music Ministries: Anne Compton Assistant Director: Nancy Kramer Sunday School Superintendent Kelly Horn President of Council: Frank Bernhardt Vice President of Council: Robin McAlpine *The deadline for the POST is the Second Friday of each month. DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST COMMUNION? On September 16 th Isabella Oblander will receive her First Communion at St. Timothy s. She has been excited about this for a long time. We will invite her to share a few words about what this means to her, and show the banner she has made in honor of the occasion. Perhaps this is an opportunity for you to recall your first communion, and consider how your understanding of this Sacrament has grown over the years. We have a few small booklets with illustrations and information about the Lord s Supper (just outside Pastor s office door) should anyone like to review the Lutheran understanding of this source of forgiveness, nurture, and grace. BENEFITS OF CHURCH CAMPS & REPORT ON SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT LUTHERIDGE Michael Williams will give a brief "sample of his internship at Lutheridge Camp in NC, during worship on September 23 rd. You are invited to remain a few minutes following worship for a more complete presentation and question session. Information is also available regarding the programs for families and adults at other times of the year. Ask Pastor Linda to recommend one you might like! We remember all members in our church family who serve in the military: Matthew Holland, Joseph Jordan, Robert C. McKenzie, Jr., Isaac Ryan. If we have left out someone who is in the military, please contact the church office.

Pastor s Report: Included were her pleasure with the Bible Study, and a desire to participate in home communion visits as she has with Karen Tester. Pastor met with the Worship and Music Committee and will be looking at the worship settings. Lutheran Family Services will soon contact St. Timothy s and the publication Seeds for the Parish was discussed. Pastor also expressed appreciation for the congregational condolences and concern for her step-son s death. Committee Reports: Worship and Music: Concerns have been reviewed. A couple of different settings will be used with a slight rearrangement of prayer requests and praise time. Evangelism: Spirit Sunday will be September 9 th. Stewardship: Reading and research about Stewardship is ongoing. Service: Because there were very few signups for the Mammography Van, the visit will be cancelled. Mutual Ministry: Comments regarding the pastor search have indicated a preference for a man with a family and children. Finance: Financial reports indicated a total income of $95,686 and total expenses of $91,358 year to date. (Cont d on next page)

5 Page 5 (Cont d from page 4) Property: The Fall Clean -up is tentatively scheduled for October 20 th. A bid was received to clean up the bamboo behind the church. The motion passed to remove the bamboo for no more than $950. After discussion, the motion to have the hedges trimmed for a charge not to exceed $400 also passed. Movie nights, which may possibly include dinner, are being considered. Movies are being researched. Old Business: The possibility of a Council Retreat was discussed with the suggestion of meeting for a day and a half at some point. Pastor asked that a Saturday, perhaps including a Friday night, be scheduled. A Synod Social Statement has been received and is available to be reviewed. Dan Cox is still examining improvements for the parking lot. New Business: None Council s next meeting will be Thursday, September 13 th. Kay Kinard, Council Secretary Update to Congregation of St. Timothy s about Pastor s Family Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, It was August 23 rd when our son Aaron was shot and killed. Five weeks later we were finally able to set a date for the funeral: October 13 th. It has been a long period of uncertainty and upheaval, and in some ways will be even more difficult when the rest of the family joins us for the week of the funeral. As of this writing, we expect our daughter-in-law, Lyz, to be released from the hospital within a day or two. Although she will still have external hardware to keep her jaw together, she will be able to live with a friend who can provide a home and care as she continues to heal. For this we give thanks to God! For our ability to provide grandson Keith with a loving home while his mother recovers, we also give thanks to God! However, because of the ongoing investigation into our son Aaron s death, she will not be allowed to take Keith back with her at this time. He remains in our care for an indefinite time, though we understand it likely will be years rather than months. Obviously this change in our household means many changes for Brian and me! Keith begins preschool this fall in Irmo, and Brian and I are hoping that this, along with some babysitter time, will provide enough relief for us each to continue in (Cont d on next page)

6 Page 6 (Cont d from page 5) our work. It still amazes us that a three year old can keep going at breakneck speed from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm without a nap or quiet time! We certainly cannot! Many thanks for the loving concern expressed by all of you at St. Timothy s, and for the many offers of help with Keith!! Unfortunately, the most difficult part of all this continues to be the emotional turmoil in family relationships since the shooting and for that there is little you can do to help right now beyond the wonderful, life-sustaining support of your prayers for us all. If you will continue with those prayers, and can be patient as I muddle through this time of grief and adjustment, I will forever be grateful to God for your grace!! In gratitude for all you mean to me and my family, Pastor Linda Anderson Spirit Sunday Spirit Sunday, September 9, will bring Funlympics to St. Timothy s. The celebration begins immediately after worship with an International Lunch. Each family is asked to bring one or two dishes with flavors from another country (France, Mexico, China, United States.). Then the games begin. Each nation (an auxiliary of our congregation) will provide information about its activities and present its athletes (whoever chooses to compete). The events will be a modified cornhole toss, plastic drink cup stack, yoyo endurance, egg in spoon relay, hula hoop twist, and knee ball race. A description of the events with a sign-up sheet is in the narthex. Nations are looking for athletes. Gold medals will be awarded. Our new members will be our special guests for the celebration. Everyone is encouraged to be an athlete or a spirited spectator. Through our nations presentations, we will all learn about activities in our congregation.
