3 BILL s BLACK BOOK You can look at life a couple of ways. You can look at it as being futile and it s all just going to end in death; so you cling to life just dying to have a good one. OR You can look at life as temporary and inevitably it will end in death. However you look at it, you discover that to really live life, you have to die first. Literally we know that scenario as heaven. (Pain-free; disease-free; sin-free) But for right here and right now, I want to challenge you to consider what the Bible calls dying to self in order to experience the abundant life. In other words, you only really live when you understand God s perspective on this life. Romans 8 describes the ultimate lifestyle. It s like you re winding your way up I-5 towards the Oregon border. You re coming up to some incredible mountains, some incredible scenery. It s beautiful. That s what the book of Romans is like, like this mountain that you re going through. But those of you who have driven up that way know that all of a sudden in the midst of those mountains is this huge mountain that rises above all the others, Mount Shasta. It s not that the others aren t grand it s just that there s something about this one mountain that catches your attention. It almost takes your breath away when you come around the corner and you see it. Romans 8 is something like that. Romans 8 helps us to know how God can change our lives because He s a God that loves us and doesn t condemn us. This chapter has God s life-changing answers to four condemning statements that we ve probably all made about ourselves at one time or another. We feel God says We have I m no good No condemnation Liberty I m never going to change No domination Victory My life is falling apart No desperation Expectancy There is no future for me No separation Security Have you ever said to yourself I m no good because of something you ve done or something you ve not done. You just want to kick yourself. You say, I m just no good! Romans 8 has the answer. It reminds us that God has no condemnation for us. It reminds us that we can have liberty because of what Christ has done for us. What about a condemning statement like, I m never going to change. I ve prayed about it. I ve wanted to change this, wanted to change the way I do this or that or say that or think that but I m never going to change. Romans 8 says that because of God s grace we have no domination of sin in our lives any more. We can have victory. Then there is the feeling that all of us have had sometimes: My life is falling apart. I don t know if it s anything I ve done but lately the wheels are coming off. Who hasn t felt that way sometimes? Romans 8 has the answer. It reminds us that we have a life of no desperation. It reminds us that we can have expectancy in our life always. Then Romans 8 ends with the highest peak. Do you ever feel like, There s no future for me. Romans 8 ends by reminding us that we can live a life of no separation, no separation from God. We can live a life of security. Romans 8 goes from no condemnation to no separation. It s one of the most assuring chapters in the entire Bible. Take some time this month and read through this great passage. You will not regret it. Until Next Time, God Bless You! Pastor Bill 3

4 Earlier this year in July I reached 15 years on staff here at FBC. After a late April graduation from undergraduate college and returning to California in early May, my first day on staff was July 7, What you will see below are excerpts from my weekly journaling from the first four weeks I was back in California. All of these excerpts are related to what God was revealing to me about His ways. (Note: Several of the entries have portions that are directed towards God as You. ) 5/4/03 5/11/03 The Lord s way is to keep those who trust in Him safe. 5/11/03 5/18/03 God s way is to shape and form each of us uniquely. We are all children of His, but are formed uniquely. You have prepared good works in advance for us which we are shaped and being shaped for. Your way is to not allow any of us to be self-sufficient. We not only need You, but we need Your church as well. You have created us as Your church. Your way is to accomplish Your purposes through the church. You use people who are working together because we all have a call to be ministers. We become a part [of] and co-owners of Your mission. 5/18/03 5/25/03 The Lord s way is to make examples of His grace and mercy. Paul/Saul himself realizes himself (in 1 Timothy 1) to be a display of Jesus unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. The Lord s way is to show His mighty love, power, and grace in people as He changes their lives. These changed lives are wonderful testimonies of God s power and tools of encouragement and/or object lessons for fellow and future believers. 5/25/03 6/1/03 The Lord s way is to mold us over time. He does have the power to and at times gives us immediate release from sin that is evident to all. However, the Lord s way is for us to take up our cross daily and to be transformed into His likeness day by day. The Lord accomplishes His purposes in our lives through all we go through including, maybe even especially (see 2 Cor. 1:3-6; James 1:29), the trials and sufferings. God s work in our life is progressive and continual (although our actions can sometimes thwart/delay the process). It is our hope and prayer that among the other amazing things God does as we engage with the 40 Days of Prayer, that we will also come to a fuller understanding of His ways. 4

10 Heart to Heart Women s Ministry Upcoming Events God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family. Principle 2: Every Christian needs a laboratory for life.
