3 BILL s BLACK BOOK A few thoughts and insights from the book Ten Great Ideas from Church History by Mark Shaw. A Vision for the Lost Ten Great Ideas from Church History William Carey Great Idea #8: Faith in the Word of God is the great means by which Christ advances his kingdom through human instrumentality. Shaw points out that Carey became incensed by Christian indifference to the lost around the world (154). This idea deals specifically with world missions. Carey was one who took the Great Commission seriously. Most of the world is not Christian. Shaw cites the two biggest groups of non-christians as 430 million pagans and 130 million Muslims (154). Carey saw the importance of reaching all people groups. Their salvation occurs as the Word of God is rooted into their culture. Rooting the Word of God in human cultures by the applications of seven principles: Principle #1 Effective mission is based on a biblical theology that produces both prayer and action. Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God. Principle #2 Effective mission is facilitated by parachurch agencies committed to the Word of God. These organizations were invented to meet a need rather than for any theological reason. Principle #3 Effective mission must focus on the translation and dissemination of the Word of God. The translation and spread of God s Word in the language of the culture helps establish Christianity in that culture. Principle #4 Effective mission is furthered by a visible unity among believers in the Word of God. Cooperation is important for the effective spread of the gospel. Principle #5 Effective mission depends on national churches and indigenous leaders discipled in the Word of God. Leadership in these churches should be raised up from among the people of the culture. Principle #6 Effective mission must display a cultural sensitivity consistent with the Word of God. Learn all you can about the culture. Interject Christ into their culture. Don t simply make them a picture of yourself. Principle #7 Effective mission flows out of a lifestyle modeled on the incarnate Word of God. The lifestyle of those sharing the gospel should demonstrate deep devotion and spiritual commitment to God and his Word. How to put Carey s model to work: Use #1: Review Carey s principles periodically. Use #2: Cultivate world Christians in your home, church, or organization. Use #3: Rebuild the theological foundations of mission. Use #4: Formulate a mission vision and strategy for your church. Use #5: Send your people around the world. Use #6: Promote mission-focused prayer. Until Next Time, God Bless You! Pastor Bill 3

6 All Stars is getting close to wrapping up their season coming up in May. It s hard to believe that we have almost completed another successful season. Even though our enrollment is lower, the kids still come ready to have fun, ready to learn, and ready to give their best each Wednesday evening. As a leader it s such a blessing to see how much the kids have grown since they first began the program in Kindergarten, and it s super exciting to see the Kinders come and have a blast for their first year. Our current enrollment consists of Sarai Ybarra, Zachary Valenzuela, Ileanna Rosales, Isaac Rosales, Isabella Rosales, and Issabella Valenzuela. Our team consists of Hollie Boyer, Ellen Boyer, Issac Valenzuela, and Samantha Guynes. This team loves the opportunity to make a positive impact for Christ in the lives of these children. The evening is filled with tons of love, fun, games, music, memorizing Scripture, building relationships, and drawing closer to God as they draw closer to each other. It s a blessing to be a witness to these young lives and seeing how they love God. Don t forget to invite your friends and family to the CHAMPs Easter Celebration on April 1st. The Sunday morning team has great plans for all of the students at both the 9:30 & 11:00 am services. 7 Youth Group B-SiDE Tuesday 6:30-8PM: 7th 12th Grade Small Groups Sunday 9:30AM Only Club 78 9th-12th Grade Continental Breakfast Easter Sunday April 1st {in between the services} Hosted by B-SiDE Youth April 2018 Tues., April 3rd: 6-8PM Permission Slip & $12 Bring a Friend Tues., April 10th: 6:30-8PM Bring a Friend Tues., April 17th: 6:30-8PM Below is a continuation (from last month) of an article about the importance of youth group attendance and can be found at: www. By, Mark Boyd 4. Other people seem to miss it too This excuse was as bad as but he started it. What better way to encourage others to come every week than for them to see you there each week. You can show people you care when they re not there by sending them an SMS - not to make them feel guilty but to let them know you missed them and are looking forward to encouraging them next time you re meeting. 5. I had school events that were on I didn t need to go to the school dance. I didn t need to go to band night. Events like these seem to come up all the time and because they were one offs, I felt they were important. They weren t. It seemed like I had to go but I was a lot more responsible for my priorities than I realized. I had bought a season pass to a football team and then wanted to go each Friday night. I had decided to sign up for an indoor sports team that played at different times each Friday. In reality I just viewed youth group as less important than it really was. 6. Life will get less busy once I get out of high school, I ll be regular at church then If anyone reading this is out of high school they ll know how silly I was to think this. Ask your youth group leaders if life gets any less busy after high school. Life only gets busier! So now is the best time to get into good habits for consistent attendance at youth group and getting into a habit of saying no to things and selecting a better thing over a good thing. 7. I ve got a few other Christian things on that week so I won t forget about God. The legalist in me was asking "what is the least number of times I could go to youth group and still remain a Christian?". I should have been asking," what is the most amount of times I can 7 Walking to Dairy Queen Bring $$$ Bring a Friend Tues., April 24th: 6:30-8PM Bring a Friend go?". I didn t realize that youth group wasn t for my benefit but for others. Hebrews 10:24-25 Let us consider how we may spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together as many are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as we see the day approaching.

10 God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family. Principle 2: Every Christian needs a laboratory for life. Heart to Heart Women s Ministry Upcoming Events Women s Bible Study FBC Please contact Judy Rooze for more info.
