3 BILL s BLACK BOOK Is there hope? That s one of the fundamental questions of life. It s asked everyday by thousands of people in thousands of different ways. When you re sitting in the doctor s office awaiting tests, you hear the question, Is there hope? When you re standing by the bedside at the hospital, you hear the question, Is there hope? When a couple who ve put months and months into marriage counselors, sitting there and getting nowhere, they re thinking in their minds, Is there hope? When a couple or a family hears that their child is missing, they ask the police, Is there hope? It s said that you can go forty days without food and three days without water and you can go eight minutes without air. But you can t go a single second without hope. Hope is one of the essentials of life. When hope is gone, life is over. You need hope. Is there any place that I can get hope that I can depend on, that I can count on for the crises of life, the things that are going to come into my life that I don t plan but blow me over? Are there any things like that that I can count on? Where do I find that kind of hope? The Bible tells us that you find it in God. God is the source of hope. May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in him. Then you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (GWT) In other words, as you put your faith in God, He gives you peace, joy and hope. And He says, Then you will overflow with hope The acid test of faith and hope is how you handle the difficulties in life. Anyone can have great faith when things are going great. But how do you handle the problems. I have been there and looked in people s eyes who did not have hope and seen the despair in their eyes at a funeral. On the other hand, I have been at many, many funerals of believers where there were actually celebrations. When a Christian dies, we rejoice for that person because we know where they re going. We grieve. But we re not grieving for that person. We re grieving for ourselves because we re going to miss them. When a Christian dies, we don t grieve for them. They get to be in a better place. They get to be in a place where we re all going eventually so we don t grieve for them. There s no more problems for them. We grieve for ourselves. And the Bible says, Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. Not once in scripture does it say, Grieve not or weep not or sorrow not. It does say fear not. Because it s fear that paralyzes us. But we don t grieve as one who has no hope. Because we know where we re going when we die. If you are feeling hopeless about something in your life, you have forgotten how much God cares about you. Look at these verses. 1 Peter 1:4-6 (TLB) God has reserved for his children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you And God, in his mighty power, will make sure that you get there safely to receive it because you are trusting Him So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though the going is rough for a while down here. Isaiah 46:3-5 (NIV & NCV) Listen! I have upheld you since you were conceived and I have taken care of you from your birth. Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you. I will carry you and save you. Can you compare Me to anyone? No one is equal to Me or like Me! If you ve just been barely hanging on you need to do this. First you need to remember the presence of God. He is always with you. He is aware. He cares. He can help. You will never go through anything alone. Two, you need to receive from God s people. Let other people support you. That s why you need a church family. That s why you need to be in a growth group. That s why you need to be more than just a spectator. You need to be a participator. When I am in a crisis, my church family stands with me. You need a family who will be there when the crisis comes on and the heat is there so you can receive from God s people and you can remember God s presence and then you can rely on God s promise. There are a lot of things in life that are uncertain but these three things you can count on. They are certainties of life. No matter what happens, God s presence will always be watching over me, God s purpose will always be working in me and God s place is always waiting for me. When I have hope what happens? Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. 4 James 1:26-27 (NIV) reads, Those who of God. 9 Thank you to the Swaim family for opening their beautifully remodeled home to the Women s Ministry for the team s afternoon of Christmas Fellowship and Ornament Exchange on December 9th. The special time of sharing, the wonderful food, and the opportunity to visit with some of the amazing ladies of FBC was truly a great way to usher in the Christmas season. 10 God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family. Principle 2: Every Christian needs a laboratory for life.
