3 BILL s BLACK BOOK A few thoughts and insights from the book Ten Great Ideas from Church History by Mark Shaw. A Vision for Justice William Wilberforce Great Idea #9: Vital Christianity fights for the personal freedom and betterment of those who suffer using the weapons of persuasion, education and legislation. Wilberforce actively emphasized that two concepts need to be rejected in working for justice, radicalism and reactionary conservatism. When dealing with social action he emphasized that extremism is not effective and in fact leads to chaos. (Wise words for today s culture.) Mark Shaw, in his evaluation, recommended that we work for reformation rather than revolution. He writes, Revolutions are quick and dirty. Reformation is not nearly as popular a word or concept as revolution. Yet the slow and patient work of reformation is far more effective over time than revolution (185). Lasting change is a slow process. The word that best describes a person working for social justice is persistence. Take stands for what is right and work on changing the attitudes of those in opposition. Justice is achieved through many long battles. It is more important to focus on spiritual renewal. A heart turning towards God is the best instrument for establishing justice. Reality tells us we must suffer before we experience the joys of reform. We are obligated, as followers of Christ, to work for the oppressed. Wilberforce s Model of Christian Social Action: Feature #1 Reject radicalism. Wilberforce rejected all utopian solutions largely because he believed the sin fulness of humankind renders all such schemes impossible. Feature #2 Reject reactionary conservatism. Extremism leads to chaos. Feature #3 Stress the practical nature of true Christianity and the new birth. The chief business of the believer while on earth is not to meditate, but to act. Feature #4 Use the means of persuasion, education and legislation. Political and charitable action can accomplish much good. Feature #5 Display patience and persistence in promoting justice. These qualities lead to permanent change and eventual victory. Feature #6 Rely on Christian community and voluntary societies. Receive encouragement and support from the Christian community. Feature #7 Identify the practices that obscure humanity s God-given dignity and contradict the gospel, and then oppose them with all your might. Social action is based on the biblical view of humanity that we are created in the image of God. God has established the worth of humanity. Applying Wilberforce s Model: Use #1: Fight for justice from the inside. Use #2: Work for reformation rather than revolution. Use #3: Work through the sodalities of voluntary societies. Use #4: Remember the pattern of the cross win through losing. Use #5: Witness to the coming kingdom; don t try to build it. Use #6: Recognize that spiritual renewal and social action are necessary partners. Until Next Time, God Bless You! Pastor Bill Ten Great Ideas from Church History 3

4 It has been great to receive the challenging yet inspiring messages that have been part of the Unshakeable Faith series. What a blessing it is to be reminded that we can build our lives on the solid foundation of commitment to Jesus Christ and what He has done. We can indeed praise God when we are able to stand strong even when things are going wrong. I have a confession to make: I can easily be tempted. I have a confession to make: I sometimes succumb to temptation. I have a confession to make: I can easily make excuses for my disobedience. I have a confession to make: I sometimes succumb to the barriers that prevent godly living. I also have an aspiration: To live a life worthy of the calling I have received without growing weary of doing good. We will close out the month of May with what we will be calling the epilogue to Unshakeable Faith. During these two additional weeks we will explore how we can face temptation with unshakeable faith and overcome some common barriers or excuses to expressing unshakeable faith. You may be in a season in which you are overcoming the obstacles life is bringing your way. Conversely, you may be in a season in which you feel overcome by the challenges of life. Either way, continue to allow yourself to be transformed by the renewing of the mind. Let us begin praying now regarding how God will strengthen us in the near future as we face the temptations and other challenges of life that come our way. I look forward to exploring our epilogue to the Unshakeable Faith series with you as we continue to submit as a church family to God s process of molding us into His fully developed and devoted followers. Congratulations To: Laura Bryant Katreena Rybchinskiy Julie Paschal Sandra Starinieri Upon Your Completion of Class 201: Exploring My Spiritual Maturity Next Class 101:Exploring FBC Membersip on May 20th. 5 Thank you to Cynthia Stonehouse for inviting Leslie Riley to speak at the April luncheon. Leslie provided some incredibly valuable information regarding the importance of having a will and/or a trust. She also provided the steps needed in order to undertake the task of creating one or the other, or both. Great information! Another round of thanks goes to the Young At Heart team for providing such a warm, fun, and festive atmosphere for everyone to enjoy a great lunch and great conversation. The next lunch is May 9th. We always want to ensure that there is plenty of food for everyone to enjoy. With that in mind, if you are planning on attending please make certain to bring a main dish or a side dish to share with approximately 25 to 35 people. Also, remember to invite your friends and encourage them to bring a dish to share as well. FBC is always happy to provide the drinks and some yummy desserts. Please let Cay Wenning or Diane Armbruster know if you will be attending as well as what dish you ll be bringing. Thanks so much! Next Lunch May 11:30 am You are cordially invited to attend the Women s Ministry Tea Saturday May 5th 1:00 FBC Tickets: $15 per The Community Center 5

The team will host a Sports Day, Luau, Water Day, Family Movie Night, Craft Day, Bon Fire Event, and surprise We are so excited to offer this alternative to VBS. Be on the lookout this month for ways that you can help and for information on how to sign up your student and their friends. The whole community is invited to attend. Some events are geared to focus on family, while some of the events provide an opportunity for parents to leave their kids with us while they enjoy some free time. 10 God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family. Principle 2: Every Christian needs a laboratory for life.
