3 BILL s BLACK BOOK Pastor Bill is on vacation this month. In his absence please enjoy this article from Matt Manry s online blog. He is the Director of Discipleship at Life Bible Church in Canton, Georgia. It is very relevant as we head in to summer. Prioritizing Church Attendance Let s just face the facts. Today, many Christians do not think attending church is that important. In the past, Christians believed that actively being a part of a church body was absolutely necessary to one s faith. There used to be an understanding in Christian families that unless one was deathly ill or there was a family emergency, you just never ever missed church. So what has changed and caused so many people to view the church as a disposable good instead of an intricate part of one s spiritual life? Why We Don t Attend Church: A 40-Hour a week job, but no time for God Pastor Kevin DeYoung is right. Our lives really are crazy busy. There is no doubt about it. Whether you are a college student, a newlywed couple, or have a family of seven, we live in a day and age where the mentality is simply: go, go, go! This is one of the main reasons why church attendance is viewed as optional. Most people work 40-hour a week jobs in the US, and so once the weekend hits the mindset of rest and recovery sets in. Trust me, I get it. Everybody wants some downtime. But why do we think that rest and recovery should take place outside the confines of the house of God? Recently, Trevin Wax wrote an article titled: Are You A Part-Time Church Goer? You May Be Surprised. Wax explains various reasons why people miss church in today s society. There are 52 Sundays a year. If you only attend Sunday services, you are a part-time church goer. Congratulations! Do you recognize what is clearly wrong with this? Our jobs, which of course we must have to be able to support ourselves and our families, are seen as absolute necessities, while church attendance is simply seen as a dispensable activity. Brothers and sisters, this is not how it should be. Of course, the mindset of just attending church, getting your church attendance ticket punched, is absolutely wrong as well. Pastors and church leaders should preach against this mentality as well. However, think about this for a second. Just like you gather with your biological family, shouldn t you also desire to gather with your spiritual family? Why We Need The Church: A Biblical Case I know the arguments that are going to be raised about what I have said thus far. People are going to say: Does he really believe that attending a local church, going to its building, and doing this once or twice a week is what the Bible is suggesting? Well yes and no. Kevin DeYoung explains, I know we are the church and don t go to church (blah, blah, blah), but being persnickety about our language doesn t change the exhortation of Hebrews 10:25. I couldn t agree more. Fellowship with your spiritual family is a sign of maturing faith as a disciple. Hebrews 10:25 says,...not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Have we really become so new-agey in our thought that we now think that we have matured past the need to attend church? Lord, let it not be so. Gospel-Motivated Church Attendance There is no doubt that what we need to recover in the life of Christians today is a gospel-motivated church attendance. What might this look like? Well, in my opinion it s demonstrating the fact that when the church gathers on the Lord s day, she proclaims the gospel, meditates on the gospel, and rehearses the gospel. By doing this, lives will begin to fundamentally change. It really is just that simple. When the gospel is at the center our focus shifts. We no longer view church attendance as something we just need to check off, but as an intricate part of our spiritual lives. Instead of serving the god of individuality, we will be serving the God of Scripture. The gospel changes everything. However, we must first let the gospel change our low views of the church, and recognize that the house of the Lord is absolutely vital to the Christian life - to the life of a mature disciple. Should not the good news of Jesus Christ dying for our sins motivate us enough to enter into God s house on Sundays? I would say so. We are all at different points in our spiritual walks with the Lord. No matter what point you are at on your journey, I hope that you will come to see the importance of attending church. Do not be so narcissistic and self-consumed to think that you do not need the body of Christ. That is simply a sign of spiritual immaturity and a straight-up lie from the Devil. I am not trying to guilt anyone into attending church regularly either. However, I am issuing a challenge to those who consider themselves Christians. If you consider yourself to be a part of the bride of Christ (Rev. 19:7-9,21:2), tell me why would you separate yourself from the body of Christ (Rom. 12:5; 1 Cor. 10:17)? Logically, that makes no sense at all. So Christians, live in light of the fact that you have been redeemed and do not have to earn your acceptance before God through your church attendance. The community of Christ needs you because it cannot function without all of its body parts. This is not condemnation, but rather an exhortation. Attending church is a blessing that should not be taken for granted. Hope to see you all at church on Sunday morning! 3

4 revered by Christians. One of the formats of Bible Study I use has a section that prompts students to identify how Christ is seen in the studied passage. Each of the paragraphs below are my answers to how Christ is seen as I engaged with 1 Peter and 2 Peter. Christ is seen as having suffered when in the body so as to enable others to live by the will of God as He did. Christ is seen as suffering so the grace of God will restore, support, strengthen, and establish those who are in Christ. Christ is seen as suffering so that glory might arrive. Christ is seen as a lamb without defect or blemish. Christ s blood is seen as precious and imperishable. Christ is seen as providing [His people] an imperishable inheritance through His resurrection. Christ is seen as He who will be revealed (return). Christ is seen as the chosen and precious cornerstone. Christ is seen as suffering for humanity despite not committing sin. Christ is seen as healing [His people] by His wounds. Christ is seen as the shepherd and guardian of [His people s] souls. Christ is seen as the righteous One who dies for sins once for all on behalf of the unrighteous. Christ is seen as being made alive once again by the Spirit. Christ is now seated at the right hand of God with authority. Christ is to be Christ is seen as [His people s] righteousness. Christ is seen as giving [His people] divine power enabling living a godly life. Christ Jesus is seen as the confirmed Son of God. Christ is seen as a contrast to the false prophets. Christ speaks true words that free [His people] from sin and enable [them] to be slaves of righteousness. Christ is seen as rescuing the godly and punishing the unrighteous. Christ is seen as being patient due to desiring all to come to repentance. His patience is so as many will come to salvation as possible. Christ is seen as communicating the Word to the apostles to deliver to His people. Christ s return is seen as imminent even if much waiting is required. Christ is seen as worthy of glory always. 7 Youth Group B-SiDE Tuesday 6:30-8PM: 7th 12th Grade Small Groups Sunday 9:30AM Only Club 78 7th & 8th Grade A2J Addicted to Jesus 9th-12th Grade 5 Ways to Stay Strong in Your Faith During the Summer The school year is officially over for some and finally coming to a close for others. We are finally catching a glimpse of the promised land we had been waiting for since the first few days of school summertime! The time for hanging out with friends, vegging out on the couch, taking cool trips, and of course bingeing on all the shows and movies that homework/studying prevented you from watching. But when it comes to our spiritual lives, summertime can be a time of spiritual dryness a time when we fall off our spiritual path. During the school year, youth groups serve as places where we can reenergize and rest from the many spiritual battles of the week a place where we can talk spiritual strategy, encourage one another, and learn from our mistakes so that we can jump back into the battle, armed and ready for whatever weekly challenges lie ahead. This is why B-SiDE Youth is important all year round. Here is a survival guide for the best ways to prevent a summer vacation from turning into a temporary vacation from God, so that we can be prepared for the months ahead. 1. Shoot for the Moon This may sound like a DIY self-improvement book, but one of the keys to accomplishing anything in this case staying spiritually fit during the summer is setting goals for yourself. And just like heading to the gym, learning a new language, or mastering the art of Kung fu, you have to set objectives or resolutions for your spiritual life in order to make/continue any progress. Set reasonable goals for yourself, like making a commitment to pray at a certain time or reading a small part of the Bible every morning, and be creative. I once had a friend who made entering the bathroom a reminder for her to pray. Although this might sound strange, designating a space (i.e. bathroom, the car, a classroom) you use daily to remind yourself of your goals (i.e. praying) is not only creative, but extremely effective. 2. Gather One of the most important parts of youth group is the support that the members provide one another throughout the spiritual highs and lows we encounter. This network of support acts like a harness that keeps us from flying away during the twists and turns we so often face on a daily basis. A great way to continue and deepen in our faith journey during the summer is to form a community of friends with whom we can build trust and establish relationships (including Youth Group). In this way we can create a group of people (or even just one person) that can hold one another accountable, support one another, pray together, have fun and enjoy each other s company. As Jesus said, For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20) 3. Answer the Call to Serve By living out our faith it can grow tremendously. As stated in James 2:14-26, faith without works is dead, so to serve others is the very embodiment of our faith put into action. Jesus calls on us to be His hands and feet to our neighbors and local communities by completing the Spiritual and Physical acts of mercy. With no school, summer is a great time to meet Christ face to face out in the community through various volunteering opportunities like helping out at our Vacation Bible School, or volunteering at the Hope Pantry that serves the less fortunate in our communities. In any case find a cause or service you are passionate about and pursue it, not for the service hours, but for the greater glory of God 4. Read Books for the Soul Reading the Word of God is an essential part in any Christian s spiritual journey, and thankfully it is the most widely available book in the world. But for many of us, we treat the Bible more as a paperweight than as the inspired Word of God, and it sits on a counter or bookshelf, untouched, unread, and unused. Make this the summer that changes that. Reading the Bible can seem like an insurmountable task. Its sheer length and complexity are enough to scare of any determined soul and many times it is this seeming difficulty that prevents us from peeking into the book s contents. That s why you need to find an approach that 7 June 2017 Tues., June 6th: NO B-SiDE Tues., June 13th: 6:30-8PM What B-SiDE Stands For! Bring a Friend Tues., June 20th: NO B-SiDE Vacation Bible School If you want to help; Sign up on our FBC Family website Tues., June 27th: 6:30-8PM June s Event Night *Details to come Bring a Friend works best for you, whether that s finding an app/website that gives you the Bible verse of the day, or setting a time or place where you commit yourself to reading a chapter of one of the Gospels anything, even the slightest steps, that gets you into the Word every day. But you don t have to stop there. Because Christianity has been around for 2,000 years, there have been countless books written by amazing Christians who have gone before us. Gove one of them a try. 5. Stay Connected We, undeniably, live in a highly connected world in which we are bombarded 24/7 with status updates, posts, and news feeds on social media but this doesn t necessarily have to be a bad thing. There are also countless websites, apps, and Facebook pages that can shine the light of the Good News while you surf or scroll in the heat of the summer. Congratulations to our B-SiDE Youth Graduates & Their Families

Look to the left for the Small Group list. FBC Mid-Year Temperature Check-Up by Randolph Romero, Jr. As you and I approach summer, we can find value in slowing down and giving ourselves a check-up inspired by our church s mission, purpose, and slogan statements. Am I inviting others to an intimate loving relationship with God? Am I connecting in healthy loving relationships with other believers? Am I allowing myself to be guided towards a Christ-like lifestyle? Am I serving in life-changing ministry and mission locally and elsewhere? Am I honoring God s Name in the way I live and think? In what ways have I grown in my love of God and love for others so far this year? In what ways have I been obedient in sharing the gospel with others? In what ways have I grown in showing mercy and compassion to the people I come across? In what ways am I contributing to FBC becoming a healthier church? What will I do in the near future to promote unity with my church family? What will I do in the near future to cultivate love in my life? What will I do in the near future to choose progress and promote spiritual growth in my life? What will I do in the near future to illustrate my commitment to cherishing civility? 9

10 God never intended for his followers to live the Christian life separated from the rest of the body of Christ. The church must provide an environment where people can share the real stuff of life and find support, encouragement, honesty, openness, grace, and biblical trust. The most effective way to do this is through small groups. Principle 1: Every Christian needs a spiritual family.
