3 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD 3 EPIPHANY by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord has a complicated beginning. The story begins differently in the east and the west churches. In the early fourth century, Rome and the churches in the west did not celebrate Epiphany, instead they celebrated the birthday of Jesus or the Incarnaon on December 25 th. The feast affirmed the two natures of Christ as both human and divine. It also celebrated the appearance or manifestaon of God through Christ to the whole world. In the early fourth century, the churches in the east did not celebrate the western Christmas, instead they celebrated Epiphany. The eastern Epiphany celebrated several events that revealed God in Jesus: The Incarnaon, the Birth of the Lord, the Adoraon of the Wise Men, Jesus Bapsm by John and the Miracle at Cana. The eastern Epiphany was more concerned about celebrang the appearance of God to the world, rather than historical events. By the middle of the fourth century, the west and east churches began celebrang both days. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus or the Incarnaon. Preface II for Christmas states: For on the feast of this awe filled mystery, though invisible in his own divine nature, he has appeared visibly in ours; and begoen before all ages, he has begun to exist in me; so that, raising up in himself all that was cast down, he might restore unity to all creaon and call straying humanity back to the heavenly Kingdom (2011 Roman Missal, p392). Epiphany celebrates the entrance of Christ into the world. The Preface for the Epiphany states: For today you have revealed the mystery of our salvaon in Christ as a light for the naons (2011 Roman Missal, p396). Tradionally, Epiphany is the day for blessing homes. Family members gather at the main door of the house (inside or outside) and the following prayer is read by whomever the family chooses. Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begoen Son to every naon by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill them with the light of Christ, that their concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Blessings, p685). Amen (Book of In Germany, when the prayer is finished, the following inscripon is wrien with chalk above the door (20+C+M+B+18), while another reads the corresponding words: The leers are Lan Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same me the leers are the first leers of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar (Twelve Days of Christmas, Elsa Chaney, The Liturgical Press, 1955). Annual Volunteer Appreciation The St. Hugo Parish staff is honored to invite you to a special evening of appreciaon on Friday, January 12, 2018 All volunteers in every ministry and commiee are invited to aend. The evening will begin with Mass at 6:30 PM in the church, and dinner will follow in the parish hall. We look forward to this opportunity to thank you for all that you do for our parish. You are the St. Hugo STARS! Please join the Parish Council and Parish Staff for our opportunity to say Thank You

6 6 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS BLOOMFIELD HILLS THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The Christmas Season concludes on the feast of The Bapsm of the Lord, which is celebrated this year on Monday, January 8. Ordinary Time begins aer the celebraon of the Bapsm of the Lord. The Bapsm of Jesus and the wedding at Cana were originally part of the feast of Epiphany. Aer Vacan II, the liturgical calendar was revised and expanded to a threeyear cycle (Cycle A, B and C). This meant that in Cycle A the Sunday Gospel is from Mahew, in Cycle B the Sunday Gospel is from Mark, in Cycle C the Sunday Gospel is from Luke; and every year the Gospel of John is read for special feasts or at other mes. So, in the present liturgical calendar of the church, the theme of Bapsm is highlighted in all three cycles (A, B, and C). This year the church is using the readings from Cycle B which uses the Gospel of Mark. The church assigns a very important place to the event of the Bapsm of Jesus. There is a threefold significance to this feast. First, God reveals the Divine Sonship of Jesus through the voice from heaven: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased (Mt. 3:17). Second, the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus as a sign of the anoinng and appointment of Jesus to his role as Messiah at the start of his public life. Third, the water of bapsm has the power to forgive sin and elevates believers to the status of daughters and sons of God. Let us take this week to ponder our own Bapsm into Christ Jesus. Through our bapsm, we put on Christ and become part of the family of God. Through our Bapsm we become God s beloved sons or daughters. Through our bapsm, we become disciples of the Risen Lord. Through our bapsm, we profess belief in the Father Creator, the SonRedeemer and the Holy SpiritSancfier. The opening prayer for the Bapsm of the Lord summarizes the meaning of our bapsm: When Christ had been bapzed in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adopon, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you (2011 Roman Missal p64). 11 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD 11 STEWARDSHIP/ CSA STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTSCYCLE B The Epiphany of the Lord (January 6/7, 2018) Today s Gospel from St. Mahew narrates the story of the Magi who visit the Christchild, the newborn King. So overwhelmed during their inial encounter, they adore Jesus by prostrang themselves, face down, then offer Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gis prefigure Christ s royalty, divinity, and suffering. The Scripture readings from Isaiah and St. Paul further express how the Good News of salvaon is to be professed to all people. Do we, as Chrisan stewards, follow the example the Magi set in offering adoraon, praise, and glory to God? Do we gratefully honor Him by living the Good News, making Him personal in our lives, and then spreading His joy, peace, and message of salvaon to everyone we meet? To deepen your life in Christ, aend Alpha or a similar evangelizaon event at your parish. Archdiocese of Detroit

Aer their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, unl it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gis of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a ny babe. Pung their own posion out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gis. Tradionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anoinng he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gis are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gis in our lives.
