3 Page 3 Dear Friend in Christ, Life is so full of joy none of us likes to think much about death. It s an uncomfortable topic, but it is inevitable. At the request of many within our Catholic community, the Archdiocese of Detroit has expanded their resources to providing beer informaon about Catholic funeral rites and cemetery services. On October 22 nd and 23 rd 2016 representaves from the Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services (Holy Sepulchre Cemetery) and A.J. Desmond & Sons funeral home will be here at St. Hugo of the Hill Church to discuss the spiritual and praccal reasons for learning about Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services. Informaonal presentaons will be held in the hall aer the 5pm Mass on Saturday and the 8am, 10:00 am & 12:00 am Masses on Sunday. The session will include a short presentaon with queson and answer opportunies. Refreshments and light Hors d oeuvres will be served. Catholic Funeral & Cemeteries Services is an integral part of the Church and the Catholic community: Our Catholic Funeral tradion affirms our belief in the communion of saints and our trust in Jesus promise of everlasng life. Burying the dead is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy, incumbent upon every Chrisan. The Church s rituals enable us to honor our dearly departed with solemn and tender devoon. I take this opportunity to recommend that all Catholics explore the services offered by Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services to beer understand the spiritual and financial benefits of planning ahead for their funeral and cemetery needs. Most Reverend, Archbishop Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to beer understand the importance of a Catholic funeral and burial, your financial choices, and the Church s posion on alternaves such as cremaon. Cheers in the Lord, Msgr. Anthony M. Tocco The Joy of Love Passionate Love By Sr. Barbara Rund, OP At the end of Chapter Four, Pope Francis speaks about feelings and sexuality in marriage (The Joy of Love, par.142). The World of Emoons: Jesus experienced emoons just as we do. The Scriptures have numerous accounts of Jesus being open to others, in which he experienced hurts, sufferings sorrow, anger, joy and love. Pope Francis says: A family is mature when the emoonal life of its members becomes a form of sensivity that neither sfles nor obscures great decisions and values, but rather follows each one s freedom, springs from it, enriches, perfects and harmonizes it in the service of all (The Joy of Love, par.146). God Loves the Joy of His Children: Somemes it is necessary to set limits with our emoons. However, God wants us to be happy and experience great joy, especially when we mutually love one another. The Eroc Dimension of Love: Pope Francis states: God himself created sexuality, which is a marvelous gi to his creatures Sexual desire is not something to be looked down upon (The Joy of Love, par.150). St. John Paul II believed that human persons are called to full and mature spontaneity in their relaonship (The Joy of Love, par.151). Pope Francis defines sexuality as an interpersonal language wherein the other is taken seriously in his or her sacred and iviolable dignity the human person becomes a gi (The Joy of Love, par.151). Violence and Manipulaon: Pope Francis reminds us that within marriage itself, sex can become a source of suffering and manipulaon (The Joy of Love, par.154). True sex in marriage must involve communicaon between the spouses (The Joy of Love, par.154). Any form of sexual dominaon, escapism, submission or selfish individualism must be excluded in marriage. Rather Pope Frances encourages wives and husbands to be constantly mindful of others, especially to one another (The Joy of Love, par.156). Marriage and Virginity: Pope Francis idenfies marriage and virginity as different forms of love, each have value, each is a different calling that complements the other (The Joy of Love, par ). The Transformaon of Love: Nothing alive is stac. To be alive is to change. Married love changes throughout me. Pope Francis reflects on couples growing old and sharing love in a different way. He says sexual desire may fade, inmacy may deepen, forgiveness is exchanged and the body changes physically (The Joy of Love, par ). Yet, the couple daily reaffirm their decision to love, to belong to one another, to share their lives and to connue loving and forgiving (The Joy of Love, par.163). Love transforms the couple and the couple transforms their love. Next Week: The Joy of Love Love Made Fruiul

11 Celebrating Children at St. Hugo of the Hills Parish To the parents of our young children, may we suggest Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. Sit toward the front where it is easier to see and hear. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. If you need to leave Mass with your child, please feel free to do so. Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God and to Christ. Let them know that they are at home in the liturgical gathering. To the members of the parish A smile of encouragement is always welcome to parents with small, acve children. Cheers in the Lord, Fr. The widow in today's parable didn't give up. She kept "bothering" the judge by coming to him and asking for a decision in her favor. Ulmately, her persistence caught his aenon and influenced his behavior. Jesus seems to be teaching us today that this quality of faithful persistence is a good one to have. Thus, he advises us to call out to God not once, not twice, but "day and night." This is a fing image for the idea of connual prayer; it goes on all the me without ceasing. As this Gospel reading says in the opening line, Jesus wanted to teach his disciples how to "pray always without becoming weary." It's interesng that the method he used for this instrucon was to emphasize the reward of such persistent prayer. The parable's conclusion assures us that for those who pray without giving up, God "will see to it that jusce is done for them speedily." Perhaps this aracve promise is supposed to keep us from losing hope, from throwing in the towel, from becoming "weary" when our requests don't seem to be geng heard. Following the example of this determined widow, we need not fear to repeatedly make our requests known to God. In fact, we should make a point of it! If we only offer our prayers of peon haleartedly, without real convic- on, persistence, or sincerity, they are not as powerful as they could be. But when we truly commit to taking these requests before the Lord, day aer day (and night aer night!) then we are displaying a kind of profound faith in God's ability to act on our behalf. So, full of hope and trust, let's keep "bothering" this truly just Judge!
