1 J 4, 2017 P S P S P 1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God." Acts 2: 1-11 R P S P 7 P S by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP Aer two delighul days in Assisi, we traveled north by bus for about three hours to Siena in the Tuscan countryside. Siena is a medieval city, situated atop three hills, founded 3,000 year ago by the Etruscans. Chian vineyards, olive trees and Tuscan villages surround the ancient city. Siena is known for its 17 districts that have horse race compeons twice a year, on July 2 and August 16. These races take place in the center of the city at the Piazza II Campo (a shellshape medieval square). A charming place that is surrounded by cafes and restaurants. 3 P S P 3 P 1 We arrived at the hotel and le for Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis in the northern part of the old city of Siena. Aer Mass, we walk in heavy rain toward the Campo for lunch. Aer about fieen minutes, the neverending winding streets suddenly opened before us into the huge Campo. Quickly we scaered and took shelter in the many restaurants surrounding the plaza and ate lunch as the rain poured down upon the red brick pavement. Aer lunch, the rain stopped and we gathered together for a guided walking tour of Siena. Of all the many sites, three le a deep impression on me, the Siena Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumpon (Duomo), the Basilica of St. Dominic and the home and chapel of St. Catherine of Siena. (Basilica of St. Francis) The Siena Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumpon or the Duomo was built between 1215 and 1263, decorated in white and greenishblack marble in alternang stripes. It was truly spectacular, especially the facades, stained glass, marble mosaic floors, library of illuminated choir books and stunning frescoes and the bapstry. (Siena Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumpon [Duomo]) The Basilica of St. Dominic was begun by the Dominicans in 1226 on the hill of Camporegio near the home of St. Catherine. This is where Catherine prayed and members of her family are buried in the crypt. On the right side of the church is a small chapel with a relic of St. Catherine (her mummified head). Her body is buried in Rome at St. Mary above Minerva. (Basilica of St. Dominic) The home and chapel of St. Catherine have been adapted into a series of chapels which occupy the site where she was born on March 25, Next Week: Pilgrimage St. Catherine of Siena (Home and Chapel of St. Catherine)..

7 P S P 7 P by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The Easter season is the oldest liturgical season of the Church Year with its roots grounded in the Jewish feasts of Passover and Pentecost. Passover celebrates the freedom of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. It is a feast of conversion and remembering the acons of God. Pentecost celebrates the giving of the law or Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. It is a feast of thanksgiving and commitment to the covenant made with God. Pentecost takes place fiy days aer the celebraon of the Passover. The gis of the Holy Spirit are to bring results. As St. Mahew reminds us: Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a roen tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a roen tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them (Mahew 7:1720). The tradional twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit are: love or charity, generosity, joy, gentleness, peace, faithfulness, paence, modesty, kindness, selfcontrol, goodness, chasty. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are signs that I have allowed the Holy Spirit to be effecve, acve and visible in our lives. How do others observe these fruits of the Holy Spirit in my behavior? In Chrisan life, there is a close relaonship between the feasts of Easter and Pentecost. Easter recalls our freedom from sin and death. Pentecost recalls our recepon of the gis of the Holy Spirit and our identy in Christ as the people of God the Church. As we sang Alleluia throughout these fiy days of joy, we remember that we are members of God s family, who have been adopted by God. Pentecost completes what Easter began. Our mission is to act in a new way as God s chosen people. As the Pentecost Sunday preface states: For, bringing your Paschal Mystery to compleon, you bestowed the Holy Spirit today on those you made your adopted children by uning them to your only Begoen Son. This same Spirit, as the Church came to birth, opened to all peoples the knowledge of God and brought together the many languages of the earth in profession of the one faith (2011 Roman Missal p.309). On Pentecost Sunday, we remember the gis of the Holy Spirit given at Confirmaon: wisdom, understanding, right judgement, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder and awe in God s presence. It is important to recall that these gis are given for the common good. How am I using these gis of the Holy Spirit for others?..

It also gives you the opportunity to contribute to first and/or second collecons if you are out of town, etc. Please consider this opon or connue to use the offertory enveloped you currently receive. If you do not get envelopes but wish to, contact the Parish office at For more informaon or to sign up for Online Giving, visit our website at and click on the Give Online link. You may also scan the QR code below with your smart phone to be directed to our website. Unleash the Gospel, Grow Your Faith! S T Today s Scripture readings for Pentecost fingly focus on the Father s gi of the Holy Spirit and the grace and strength He brings to the Apostles and the early Church. In his First Leer to the Corinthians, St. Paul proclaims all spiritual gis (charisms), forms of service, and works come from the same Trinitarian God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What a powerful stewardship message for us even today! We, as Chrisan stewards, realize that all members of the Body of Christ, through God s grace, are abundantly blessed with unique talents for building up our parish communies. What special gis can we offer each week at the altar of the Lord in gratude for our many blessings? Pray and reflect on how you can serve your parish, perhaps as a catechist, lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, altar server, choir member, school volunteer, or as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, or Stewardship Commission. God will truly bless your efforts. So they started out in a boat by themselves to a lonely place. (Mark 6:31-32) T C S M T P From Part One: Considering a Life of Chrisan Stewardship The early Chrisan community made a habit of constant and persevering prayer. Indeed, Luke ends his Gospel story with a picture of the apostles connually in the temple praising God (Luke 24:53). Today s Chrisan emulates the early apostolic community and makes specific commitments to daily prayer, pausing during each day to glorify God. The Chrisan disciple s prayer is joined with that of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit Who is praying with us. Making me to pray is not only a reminder of God s divine presence, but also a means of expressing the divine life, with all that this implies about the fullness of me and Jesus Christ drawing near and calling into our hearts. By taking me out for prayer, we are following Christ not only learning to be His disciples, but also sharing our experience of God. If you are already a person who spends me each day devoted to prayer, you understand why it is vitally important that those who are to be invited to Chrisan stewardship must first learn the fundamental importance of taking me to pray and bless God for all that we have and all that we are. "The revoluon taking place in communicaons media and in informaon technologies represents a great and thrilling challenge; may we respond to that challenge with fresh energy and imaginaon as we seek to share with others the beauty of God." Social Media is fundamentally changing how people communicate. Our Church can not ignore it; in fact, it is our responsibility as Catholics to bring the Church's teachings into the "digital connent." At the Archdiocese of Detroit, we see Social Media as a way for us to make disciples by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. You can connect with our various Social Media channels to engage in and receive informaon about different Archdiocesan events, Saints, Feast Days, and relevant Catholic news in and around Detroit. #ResurgetDetroit As we work to Unleash the Gospel throughout our Archdiocese, we look to one of the original missionaries in Detroit for inspiraon. Fr. Gabriel Richard came to Detroit in 1798 aer fleeing from France during the French Revoluon. He became the pastor of Ste. Anne de Detroit and started the city's first newspaper aer bringing a prinng press to the city. Richard also cofounded the University of Michigan. But Richard is best known for his ministry preaching the gospel to others and assisng the sick during a cholera epidemic. He passed away during the epidemic, but he le us the words that would later become the moo of the city of Detroit: SPERAMUS MELIORA RESURGET CINERIBUS"We hope for beer things. It will rise again from the ashes" #ResurgetDetroit brings the words of Fr. Gabriel Richard back into relevance. We use this hashtag as we connue to unleash the Gospel and watch Detroit "rise again". Then, he said it again. And then, "he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" Jesus brings peace, and he brings the Holy Spirit. Peace, in fact, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Today, on this feast of Pentecost, we remember the dramac outpouring of the Holy Spirit that came upon those first apostles and the peace that came along with it. But we do more than remember. We also celebrate the presence of this same Spirit in our midst. Through the sacrament of bapsm, every Chrisan receives the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in his or her soul. Thus, the gi of peace is already ours! The queson is whether or not we have really begun to appreciate and ulize this most precious gi. Like the apostles who had locked themselves up "for fear of the Jews," we too are capable of imprisoning ourselves in our own anxiees. We fret and worry about the future, about our sufferings or our disappointments, and too oen let these concerns sfle the true peace that Jesus offers us. But the Church today urges us to rejoice and to step out in faith like the apostles who le their fears behind them. Peace not only alleviates our fears, it also frees us to live our faith to the fullest, to have the courage to take risks, and to leave our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel. This is what we are called and, not only that, empowered to do. Anything less is a kind of spiritual poverty we bring upon ourselves. God has given us the gi of himself, present and available in every moment, every place, and every situaon. May we recognize this most wonderful gi and give thanks with grateful hearts. Flowers are blooming. And Christian stewards are reminding themselves that stewardship continues as we head into the days of vacation, family reunions and trips to the beach. We need to be especially mindful of our commitment to giving to our parish and our local church, the diocese. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that November and December are the biggest months for giving in the United States. But for those lazy days of summer? Not so much. Just think about the giving impetus during the holiday season. Every school classroom has a charitable project. Offices sprout giving trees and shelters are inundated with donations. The Christmas spirit inspires us to share the bounty. But often, charities tell us that the shelves are not quite so full in the summer. Agencies scramble to fill the roster of helpers who are out on vacation, and sometimes people forget to call and ask how they might fill a need. On a practical level, this can mean involving your whole family in a summer project at a shelter or soup kitchen. With kids out of school, there s a great opportunity to fill some idle hours with some eye-opening charitable ventures to a part of town they ve never seen. The Christian steward can offer to pick up the slack for a day or two when an agency is short on helpers. Remember to make that special monetary gift that equals our holiday giving. We can use spring cleaning, not as an excuse to have a garage sale, but instead as a chance to visit a charity with our surplus. We should, of course, not forget our parish when we go away. Summer offers a chance to have fun and adventures. Your summer stewardship plan can be as unique and beneficial as the season itself. Vicariate Stewardship Commission

23 South Oakland Vicariate Page 3 Immigration is a hot issue right now. Last month we explored the First Principle of Immigration from the US Catholic Bishops: First Principle: People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families. This month we will explore the Second Principle. Second Principle A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration. The overriding principle of all Catholic social teaching is that individuals must make economic, political, and social decisions not out of shortsighted self-interest, but with regard for the common good. That means that a moral person cannot consider only what is good for his or her own self and family, but must act with the good of all people as his or her guiding principle. While individuals have the right to move in search of a safe and humane life, no country is bound to accept all those who wish to resettle there. By this principle the Church recognizes that most immigration is ultimately not something to celebrate. Ordinarily, people do not leave the security of their own land and culture just to seek adventure in a new place or merely to enhance their standard of living. Instead, they migrate because they are desperate and the opportunity for a safe and secure life does not exist in their own land. Immigrants and refugees endure many hardships and often long for the homes they left behind. As Americans we should cherish and celebrate the contributions of immigrants and their cultures; however, we should work to make it unnecessary for people to leave their own land. Next month we will explore Third Principle on immigration from the US Catholic Bishops: A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy.
