3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 3 LENT AND ALMSGIVING by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The Gospel of Mahew provides three tools for us to use during Lent: prayer, fasng and almsgiving. Almsgiving is oen the least emphasized of these three disciplines. In the Sacred Scriptures, the Book of Tobit places emphasis on the importance of almsgiving: Prayer and fasng are good, but beer than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness It is beer to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life (Tobit 12:89). What is almsgiving all about? Catholic social teaching tells us of the importance to share with others in need, especially the poor and the most vulnerable of society. In 1971, Pope Paul VI said charity is not enough; there is something more than giving money: In teaching us charity, the Gospel instructs us in the preferenal respect due to the poor and the special situaon they have in society; the more fortunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place their good more generously at the service of others (A Call to Acon, par. 23). Chrisans have a moral responsibility to help improve the lives of people who are poor and most vulnerable. The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of almsgiving as a concrete way of being charitable: God blesses those who come to the aid of the poor and rebukes those who turn away from them giving alms to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of jusce pleasing to God (CCC, nos. 2443, 2447). Pope Francis echoes the same thoughts in his Lenten Message: we can help by acts of charity, reaching out to both those near and far through the Church s many charitable organizaons. Lent is a favorable me for showing this concern for others by small yet concrete signs of our belonging to the one human family. Almsgiving opens our hearts to others in need. Could you do more almsgiving? Do you know that 8% of your weekly contribuon goes for direct help to the poor and vulnerable in our local area? Throughout the year there are several ways to parcipate in almsgiving at St. Hugo: by caring for the homeless when we host the South Oakland Shelter (SOS) the first week of August; by teaching your children to donate cans of food at Mass for the hungry and by sorng through your closets and bringing goodcondion clothing or household items you no longer use to the Ladies of Charity. Reflect on one way you can do more for the poor and most vulnerable and do it this week. Next Week: Palm Sunday HELP NEEDED TO DECORATE THE CHURCH AND CHAPEL FOR HOLY WEEK AND EASTER Adults are needed to help transform the church and chapel for the liturgical services of Holy Week and Easter. GATHERING SPACE LENTEN CROSS by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The CROSS stands not as a sign of death, but of victory over sin. For believers, it is a sign of LOVE. God so loved the world so much that He sent us His Only Son. God s Son, JESUS, showed the depth of His love through His willingness to die on the cross for us. The large wooden cross in the Gathering Space reminds us of God s love. We invite you to write your individual crosses (troubles, pains, difficules) on the small slips of paper found on the table near the cross. Tack them to the cross where they will remain throughout Lent. On Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil ceremony, these paper slips will be burned in the New Easter Fire. 8 8 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS BLOOMFIELD HILLS FROM YOUR PASTOR by Msgr. Anthony M. Tocco Jesus is Lord: 3 Lent B The scriptures for the Third Sunday of Lent begin with a poron of the book of Exodus. The scene for this reading is Mount Sinai where Moses was given the Ten Commandments. The Chosen People brought by God out of slavery in Egypt are now pointed in a new, moral direcon. The Ten Commandments, important as they were, were not then and are not now to be seen as the ulmate test of faith for a believing person. They were established as a minimal guide allowing God s people to begin a new way of life. In the giving of these commandments as a part of the Covenant relaonship, God wanted a people who would remain faithful to a new and unchanging moral code. The code was solidified later, and reaffirmed by Jesus Himself, in the two great commandments, love of God and love of neighbor. Now consider the Gospel. The Temple had been taken over by people who forgot about this unchanging moral code and its purpose. Their thought was only of personal gain. Remember that the Temple was the most sacred place known to Israel. It was designed only for the worship of the One True God. Sadly, business had overtaken religion; and not just business, but nasty and crooked business. In that sacred place, dishonesty had taken place of the God who loved them. They should have known beer. Now the focus is on us. We have the Ten Commandments. We have the Two Great commandments. We have known for generaons the moral code passed on to us from the teaching of Jesus Himself. Today we have this Gospel showing us that, in the past, there were religious people who allowed other things to take the place of the God who loved and saved them. The important queson in our society today is clear. Are there signs out there, and are there signs in here that we have allowed other things to take the place of the God who loves us. As far as I can see, the answer is clearly yes. How many Catholics do you know are now casual about the Eucharist? How many people do you know who should be here praying with us in this church but are not. We have children in our school and in our religious educaon program aending class on a regular basis but who rarely come to church on the weekend. Sports has become the new God of Sunday and it is absurd. It is absurd to expose a child to such a wonderful faith as ours and then have parents teach them by their example of non aendance that our faith is really not so important. We are walking away from the God who loves us. We are walking away from the God who saves us. I cannot tell you how oen I have heard people complain about the secular culture to which we are all exposed. We live in an anchrisan and an ancatholic society. The aacks against the church, the aacks against our moral values and beliefs are more vicious than they have ever been. The aempts in recent years by our own government to force Catholic instuons to provide health services that are directly contrary to our deepest moral teachings and beliefs are just another example of the contempt so many have of our rights as Catholics. The truth is that nothing will change in our society out there unless we become much stronger in how we operate in here. The scriptures today remind us that there are false gods aplenty in our society. We in this church are called to know beer. Our knowledge, however, makes sense only if we have a personal relaonship with Jesus Christ. The queson for every Chrisan, every Catholic, is basic and fundamental. Are you in love with Jesus Christ? Do you know Jesus Christ or do you only know about Jesus. If Jesus is nothing more than an historical figure to you, change does not maer. If Jesus is someone you follow because you fell into this religion when you were born, then change does not maer. But if you believe that Jesus died on the Cross to save you from your sins; and if you believe that Jesus is the very Son of God and Lord of your life, then the courage of change has to exist in the very marrow of your bones. Jesus comes to us today. He comes to us in His Sacred Word and He comes to us in this Eucharist. He is here by our invitaon. We built this place to invite Him in on purpose. Today He is asking us to throw false values to the floor and to get on with His work. He wants us to know beer and He wants us to do beer. Think seriously of defending your faith and your values out loud today. The Gospel gives us the message. Jesus gives us the challenge. You and I have the power. May God give us the Grace. Cheers in the Lord Msgr. Anthony M. Tocco MARCH 11, 2018

9 Holy Land Pilgrimage with Fr. Tim Wezner Dear Friends, Now that I have returned from my pilgrimage, I wanted to share with you a few highlights and reflecons on my me in the Holy Land. Over these next few weeks, I hope to write a few comments here in the bullen. This won t be a full travelogue of everywhere I ve visited, and it won t be presented in the order I visited them; you can visit my blog for that. This will simply be some short reflecons on some of the holy sites that impacted me the most, and how this pilgrimage has affected my spiritual life. As anyone who has visited my office from November January knows, I have a great love for Christmas, and a devoon to our infant Lord. So it was a real blessing to visit so many sites associated with the Navity (See my blog entries on Ein Kerem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth for more details on those places). There were two of these holy places in parcular that really hit me. First was in Nazareth, at the Basilica of the Annunciaon. This church was built on the site that tradion holds was the locaon of the house of Joachim, Anne, and Mary, and which the early Church venerated as the place of the Annunciaon. Inside the Church, the cave that would have served as the lower level of this house is sll present, and you can go up close to it to pray. It was not very busy when my group visited, and I lingered towards the back of the group, so when my turn came to pray by the cave I had a few extra moments by myself there. Inside this cave is an altar that displays the famous verse from John s Gospel, Verbum caro factum est; The Word was made flesh. But there is one addional word added: Verbum caro hic factum est; The Word was made flesh HERE. As I knelt and prayed by myself in front of this holy place, I became overwhelmed with emoons and with the realizaon of what this statement actually means. That this really and truly is the place in FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 9 which our Lord was conceived, in which the Creator entered creaon, in which God took on human flesh and became one of us. This was one of the most spiritually powerful and consoling moments I had on this pilgrimage. The second place that I will menon today was in Bethlehem, at the Church of the Navity. This Church was built in the 4 th century over the cave in which our Lord was born, and just like at the site of the Annunciaon, I had a very powerful few moments of prayer reflecng on the fact that Jesus was born in this very place. Added to this spiritual experience was the grace that I was able to be the main celebrant of Mass for our group on this day. There is something special that they do liturgically in the Holy Land. When you celebrate Mass at any of these holy places, instead of celebrang the regular daily Mass, you celebrate a special vove Mass for that parcular place. So in the midst of our Lenten season, I celebrated Christmas Mass at the very place where our Lord was born. We sang Christmas carols, and we heard the Navity story proclaimed in the readings, that Jesus Christ was born here. It was such a joyful and holy experience for me, and I am sure that I will never be able to celebrate Christmas again without calling to mind this incredible experience. Next week I will share some reflecons from Galilee. Please feel free to visit my blog for more informaon on these and other places that I visited: hp://frmwezner.wordpress.com/ Fr. Tim

We will not be able to automacally change your donaon for you. If you are a managed giver (the office set up your account for you) you should call Cathy Seifert at and she will make any necessary changes to your account. As a reminder, access Online Giving from the St. Hugo home page The link is on the right side of the page below the Parish Calendar items. There is also a QR code at the boom of this page as well, Thank you! STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS In his Gospel, St. John describes the common link in today s Scripture passages that is also a significant theme throughout the Bible: God s infinite love for us. For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life (John 3:16). The Second Book of Chronicles illustrates how God, following the Israelites exile to Babylon due to grave sin, mercifully invites them home through an edict of King Cyrus of Persia. In St. Paul s Leer to the Ephesians, he reminds us of God s love and mercy through Christ even when we are dead in our transgressions. No sin is too great that it cannot be forgiven by our Lord through the sacrament of Reconciliaon. If you have not been to confession in a while, return with a contrite heart during Lent for forgiveness that will rekindle your discipleship in the Lord and give you peace. Archdiocese of Detroit

We live in a society where Catholic Educaon for our children is more important than ever before. This year we will be using profits of the aucon to invesgate and provide the best security and safety measures we can provide for our children and for our school. 22 22 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS BLOOMFIELD HILLS GOSPEL JN 3: 1421 Jesus said to Nicodemus: Just as Moses lied up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lied up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. We all wonder that from me to me. Each successive generaon projects rose hued longing on the past and casts furve glances at the impending future. We see forces beyond our control in nature and in the newspaper. The world is changing and we're being pulled out with the de. In the face of this confusion, today's Gospel features one of the most oquoted Scripture verses of all me: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." But if Christ has come, why is the world so challenging? Why is the world sll to our eyes being carried off in a proverbial hand basket? Jesus' response is a deeply personal one. "This is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light." Paerns arise, habits are formed, and systems become engrained, but each is the result of an interconnected web of human choices. Where do we stand? Our answers, perhaps, vary from week to week, hour to hour, missed traffic light to spilled coffee to teenage child's rebellion. The world isn't perfect because we aren't perfect. Our parish is flawed because we're flawed. Our families need work because every one of us needs to be converted. Chrisanity is a process, not a desnaon! This Sunday, Jesus invites us to consider our own lives. Where in our own lives do we prefer darkness to light? What flaws are we trying to hide? Humbly acknowledge those places today. Ask God for the grace to be transformed. Share with your spouse or a friend where you'd like to improve this week. "Whoever loves truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God." Liturgical Publicaons Inc MARCH 11, 2018
