3 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 ST. ANTHONY By Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The celebraon of St. Anthony will take place on January 17. St. Anthony was born in Egypt around 250 AD. At twentyone years of age, aer his parents died, Anthony distributed his property to the poor. He began a life of penance, withdrew into solitude, and sought out an ascec man to be his teacher of prayer. At thirty five years of age, Anthony decided to go out into the desert to connue his solitude in prayer and penance. He became a hermit and was the early founder of religious life. At 105 years of age, Anthony died in 356 AD. The life of Anthony is important because he aracted disciples, worked on behalf of the Church, gave support to believers during the Dioclean persecuon and assisted St. Athanasius. The disciples of Anthony tried to imitate his way of life, and they established selements or communies in the Egypan desert. One selement was located at Nitria and 6,000 monks lived in community. Another selement was located at Cellia and 600 monks lived in community. These selements were designed with individual dwellings for hermits, bakeries, a Church, and a guest house, so people from the cies could come for a week of prayer and penance (like our experience of a retreat). The monks would seek employment to support themselves. Today, people are sll living in community in some of these ancient selements. The celebraon of this feast day provides an opportunity for us to consider going on a retreat. A retreat is a me set apart from usual pursuits to give aenon to one s spiritual wellbeing. A retreat is an opportunity to deepen our faith. A retreat may focus on specific needs such as preparaon for marriage or discernment in making an important decision. A retreat is usually conducted at centers established expressly for that purpose. A retreat may be made with a group or by yourself with an aid of a spiritual director. If you are interested in making a retreat, you may wish to contact one of the following Retreat Centers: Capuchin Retreat in Washington ( ) Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills ( ) Visitaon North in Bloomfield Hills ( ) Weber Center in Adrian ( ) On January 17, let us pray to St. Anthony for growth in our own spiritual life of prayer: O God, who brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve you by a wondrous way of life in the desert, grant, through his intercession, that, denying ourselves, we may always love you above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 11 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 11 STEWARDSHIP/ CSA STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Today s Scripture readings from the Book of Samuel and St. John s Gospel share a common theme of accepng our Lord s will by answering His call. Our vocaon is His plan for our lives. St. Paul, in his First Leer to the Corinthians, proclaims we are all members of the Body of Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit, that you are not your own. Through the Holy Spirit, we obtain special charisms unique gis with which we serve the Lord and carry out His divine plan. Prayer, meditaon, and contemplaon lead to conversion of mind and heart, and help Chrisan stewards discern their vocaonal call from the Lord. This call may be to the priesthood or religious life, marriage, or single life. Are we, like Eli, Samuel, John, Peter, and Andrew, open to the Lord s call in our lives? If you believe God is calling you to the priesthood, the Office of Priestly Vocaons, (313) or detroitpriest.com, can assist you with discernment. Women interested in religious life may contact the Office of Consecrated Life at (313) Men seeking informaon about the permanent diaconate should also call that office, but at (313) Archdiocese of Detroit

22 22 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS BLOOMFIELD HILLS GOSPEL JN 1: John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them," What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" which translated means Teacher, "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the aernoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" which is translated Christ. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, " You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas" which is translated Peter. Aer spending the day in the company of Christ, Andrew took acon. He shared the good news! Instead of keeping his newfound friendship with Jesus all to himself, Andrew invited his brother into the fold. Andrew found Simon and "brought him to Jesus." This was no small maer because Simon would become Peter, the first pope! How important it is to bring others along with us to meet Christ! Yet, how oen do we reach out with the kind of confidence that Andrew had? Are we ready and willing to share our faith with our family and friends? Do we consider our relaonship with Jesus a gi to be shared, or a fact to be safely hidden away in our personal prayer corner? Part of our call as Chrisans is to evangelize others, to share with them the good news of salvaon. Loving Jesus and following his moral commands is essenal, of course, but it is not the end of the story. The Gospel message is meant for all people, and we are meant to be its messengers. Somemes this requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It may mean speaking up when we'd rather be silent. It may mean inving someone to Mass when they might say no. But it might also mean a conversion for someone we care about. It might mean a new minister for the Church. Ulmately, it might mean another saint in heaven. None of that is up to us, however. What we can control is only whether we share our faith joyfully and extend the invitaon to others to experience the peace that comes from knowing Christ. Liturgical Publicaons Inc JANUARY 14, 2018
