3 THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD 3 CHRISTMAS DAY by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP Christmas was first celebrated in Rome on December 25th, in the year 336 AD. Although, we do not know the exact date of the birth of Jesus, December 25th was chosen for the following three reasons. First, in the Northern Hemisphere at the winter solsce around December 22, the days slowly begin to lengthen. Our experience of the growing light from the sun is an echo of the Gospel of John: Jesus must grow greater; I, John the Bapst must grow smaller. (John 3:30) Second, the church hoped to overcome the pagan fesvals of sun worship which were celebrated around December 25th, and replace them with a celebraon of the birth of the real light of the world, Jesus the Son of God. Third, the church dated Christmas on December 25th because it was nine months from the tradional date of his concepon on March 25 th or the feast of the Annunciaon of Mary. Whatever the exact historical inspiraon, December 25th provided the most convenient day to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is this day that we celebrate the incarnaon, by the power of the Holy Spirit Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, and became human. It is this day that, we drive away the darkness with the light of Christ. It is this day that we gather around the Christmas tree lights and remember that Jesus is the light of the world. It is this day that we open our homes to every guest and remember that Jesus welcomes us to the Eucharisc banquet and dwells among us. In the Alternave Opening Prayer from the Mass During the Day we pray: God of love, the darkness that covered the earth has given way to the bright dawn of your Word made flesh. Make us a people of this light. Make us faithful to your Word, that we may bring your life to the waing world. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (1985 Sacramentary, p44) In the Opening Prayer from At the Mass at Dawn we pray: Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, as we are bathed in the new radiance of your incarnate Word, the light of faith, which illumines our minds, may also shine through in our deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (2011 The Roman Missal, p37) Welcome to St. Hugo of the Hills Whether you come to us from across the street or across the country, we are honored that you have chosen to spend part of Christmas with us. Welcome! Visitors are welcome to any of our Masses and acvies. We hope you enjoy your visit and encourage you to return oen! When people ask a priest what life in his parish is like, he is somemes tempted to count off numbers. Thinking of the work involved, he can enumerate how many weddings, funerals, bapsms, communions and reconciliaons are done in the period of a year. A thinking pastor tries to not give into such a temptaon because counng is always a mistake. Numbers mean very lile. They rarely give a true and certain picture of the real quality of life in a given parish. A pastor would do beer to reflect on a parish's willingness to be life giving... to be transformed into the kind of community that reflects the call of Jesus in the Gospel. I am most pleased to tell you that St. Hugos is that kind of parish. I believe that a parish today is called to be open, honest, loving, caring, sharing, celebrang, communicang, forgiving and understanding. We have such a parish because we have such people. Buildings can be beauful and grounds can be resul. However, a lifegiving parish cannot be known for the beauty of its structures alone. A parish must be known for a direcon the community of believers is taking. Above all, a parish should be recognized for the Gospel challenges her people willingly accepts... challenges to be less prejudiced, more loving, more dedicated to jusce, more interested in peace, more generous to those in need and more aware of her responsibilies to the whole of society and to the whole of the church. As a pastor, I am proud of the physical condion of this parish plant. I am proud to call the community to worship in such a beauful church. But I am most proud of the way our people connue to serve the Gospel. When visitors compliment our community as being warm and loving as a parish, I feel the greatest sense of accomplishment. When I see so many volunteers in acon, generous and giving, unselfish and concerned for others, reaching out to so many who are in need and becoming directly involved in addressing the problems of people who live on the margins of society, I feel most jusfied in my ministry. Cheers in the Lord, Rev. Msgr. Anthony M. Tocco, Pastor

13 THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD 13 STEWARDSHIP/ CSA STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTSCYCLE B Christmas (Navity of the Lord) (December 25, 2017) The Prophet Isaiah s ancient prophecy speaks of the Christchild as WonderCounselor, GodHero, Father Forever, and Prince of Peace. On this Christmas Day, let us, as faithful stewards, stand in awe and total gratude for God s gi of His Son, Jesus. He is our path to eternal salvaon. As Jesus was born in humble surroundings, let us offer a prayer and be mindful of our brothers and sisters in need among us. Archdiocese of Detroit

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED AT ST. JOSEPH MERCY Being in the hospital is not something most of us would choose, and yet, somemes, that is where our path leads. Many paents have no one, and oen, even the best of us must bale loneliness, fear, and worry when we are sick. A Eucharisc Minister in the hospital plays a very special role in connecng persons who are ill with the Church and with the presence of Christ. The Body of Christ has special meaning to those who are sick or anxious. No special training is needed, other than training as a Eucharisc Minister which is done in your parish. Beyond that, our St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) chaplains will teach you what you need to know to minister in the hospital. Perhaps you, or someone you know, might be called to this ministry? Typically our Eucharisc Ministers volunteer one morning per week. If you might like to learn more, please call Michael Harning ( ) in the SJMO Spiritual Care Department or Beverly Beltramo, Chief Mission Officer at EXPERIENCE A MORE MEANINGFUL GIFT THIS CHRISTMAS Presents under the Christmas tree are truly wonderful, but they can t heal a hurng marriage. Transforming your marriage into a mutually sasfying relaonship is the "gi that keeps on giving." With the help of Retrouvaille, it can be done. Retrouvaille is a Chrisan peer ministry designed to help heal troubled marriages. This quite possibly could be the best Christmas gi you could ever give yourself, your spouse, your children, your family and your friends!! Please pass this informaon on to anyone who you suspect might be a hurng couple The next Retrouvaille program will begin on Friday, January 19, in Romulus, Michigan. 18 18 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS BLOOMFIELD HILLS GOSPEL MT 1: 1825 "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relaons with her unl she bore a son, and he named him Jesus. Today is the last Sunday of the Advent season, and we hear in the Gospel the ancipaon of the feast we will celebrate in just one day. Christmas is coming! Jesus is on his way! We have had weeks to prepare for this momentous occasion, and now we are on the very verge of its arrival. The children in our midst can hardly contain their excitement as they wait to wake up on Christmas morning. The thrill of this coming moment is meant to remind us of the joy and ancipaon we should all feel as we await the coming of Christ. Yes, Christmas is a great feast, but there is more here than a remembrance of the past or a fabulous party in the present. There is a looking ahead as well. We celebrate as we ancipate. Much as Mary must have waited in wonder during the nine months of her pregnancy, we wait in hopeful expectaon as Chrisans looking forward to being reunited with our Savior. Our future is full of hope. The deflang melancholy that afflicts many people aer a holiday runs its course need not be the experience of the Chrisan waing for Christ. We are always looking forward to something! There is never a moment when we have no cause for joy. Our lives are lived in a kind of unending advent as we stand in watchful wain0g. Let us remember this as we enter into our Christmas Eve gatherings and fesvies. As we join with family and friends to share in the good things of this life, may we carry with us the joy of knowing that even beer things lie in store for us who welcome the infant Jesus into our hearts and homes.
