In 1501, twentyfive years later, at the age of twentysix Michelangelo using the same piece of marble completed the statue of David within three years in Santa Trinita, Florence ( by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP Aer a quick breakfast in Siena, we departed by bus for Florence. Soon the city came into view and dominang the skyline was the Cathedral. Florence is the capital of Tuscany and famous for its culture, art, architecture, monuments and the Medici family. Our guide led us through the winding streets of the city to the Church of Santa Trinita (Trinity) for Mass. The church was built on the site of an eleventh century church between Once inside Santa Trinita Church, we discovered approximately twenty chapels each rich in artworks. Palazzo Vecchio, David ( Aer Mass, we walked toward the town hall of Florence or the Palazzo Vecchio (palace), which is in the Piazza della Signoria (town square). In front of the building there is a replica of Michelangelo s statue of David. In 1873, the original statue of David (17 feet high, 6 tons) was moved to the Accademia Gallery in Florence to protect it from damage. It is interesng to note, that twelve large statues of Old Testament figures were commissioned in 1410 for the buresses of the Cathedral. In 1463, the statue of David was begun by Pointe Vecchio Bridge, Florence ( We connued to the Ponte Vecchio Bridge (Old Bridge) on the Arno River. It was the first bridge built over the narrowest part of the Arno River in Florence. It has been rebuilt and renovated several mes due to floods or other disasters. A bridge at this point in the river is believed to have been in use since Roman mes. As I walked along the bridge with hundreds of people, I was fascinated by its architecture and it beauty. It also gives you the opportunity to contribute to first and/or second collecons if you are out of town, etc. Please consider this opon or connue to use the offertory enveloped you currently receive. You may also scan the QR code below with your smart phone to be directed to our website. The Scripture readings for today s Feast of Corpus Chris focus on the profound mystery of bread and wine consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ. The Book of Deuteronomy foreshadows the Eucharist with a retelling of the epic story of God s gi of manna to the Israelites, which nourishes them in the wilderness. Both St. Paul s First Leer to the Corinthians and St. John s Gospel emphasize the real, true, and substanal presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ in Holy Communion. Jesus especially brings this home for us in the Gospel: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. Our Lord promises eternal life, and His words bring great hope and comfort even in the most difficult of mes. Conversion of mind to heart occurs in faithful stewards who reflect on this beauful Gospel passage. To sasfy your thirst for Christ, accept His invitaon to aend the Sunday Eucharisc celebraon and receive Communion, as well as a weekday Mass when possible. 9 T M H B B C P 9 O D E C The theme of the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal, Opening Doors to Encounter Christ, reflects our Holy Father s invitaon to all Catholics to renew their personal relaonships with our Savior, as the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Gis to the CSA make possible a wealth of ministries, programs, and services that touch the lives of thousands throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit each day. No one parish could provide all of these blessings, which benefit so many. Our CSA is a pledge program, which allows you to spread your gi over several months. Please prayerfully consider the most generous gi possible to support the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal. We anxiously await the blessings that the contribuons to this campaign will bring. For informaon about CSA funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to You may pledge your gi online at hp://sthugo.aodcsa.org Our Goal: $424, 736 Current: $255,125 Pledging Families: 491 Pledging Families Goal: % of Pledging Families CSA P U as of 6/12/ % Every one shall give as they are able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which God has given you. (Deuteronomy 16:17) S The third element is that a commitment be made that requires us to go beyond our consumer behavior s comfort zone. The proporon of our gi becomes sacrificial when it causes us to cut back on other spending habits. When we give out of our need, like the Gospel story of the Widow s Mite, then we experience spiritual transformaon. Perhaps the most important lesson we can take from this third element is that if we can give our gi and not noce it, it is not a sacrificial gi. The element of sacrifice is present when something about our life has to change in order for us to be able to give the gi. We repriorize our spending habits, we reconsider our values. Then, every me we make our sacrificial gi, we are able to recall the reasons why we chose to give From AOD.org..

John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, Martyrs Friday: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Saturday: Navity of St. John the Bapst Next Sunday: 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time Liturgical Publicaons Inc S R The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ "The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'" From the beginning, the Eucharist has been a source of controversy. Some people have always found the teaching difficult to accept. But as Catholics, the Blessed Sacrament is at the heart of our worship and our spirituality; we go to Mass to share in the holy sacrifice of Jesus' body and blood, and we receive spiritual nourishment from partaking of this heavenly food. As Jesus himself tells us in today's Gospel, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." From this passage it is clear that Jesus intended the Eucharist to be a tremendous gi for us, for "whoever eats this bread will live forever." This of course is because the bread is Christ's "flesh for the life of the world." In other words, just as he gave his body on the cross to save us from our sins, so too this same flesh is given for us at every Mass to strengthen our weakness and unite us more deeply to our Savior. Receiving Communion isn't like taking a magic pill, however. We must beware of reducing this sacrament to an empty ritual or a foolproof guarantee of heaven. No, it is quite possible to receive Communion unworthily and reject its spiritual efficacy. Just like the benefits of a healthy meal can be undone by a habit of binging on junk food, so too we can prevent holy Communion from having its full benefits when we crowd our souls with vices and sins. If, on the other hand, we wish to let this sacrament of divine grace flourish, we should receive it with a sincere spirit of gratude and reverence, praying that we may be made worthy to receive such a gi.
