1 October 2017 P.O. Box 26 Mesilla, NM Basilica de San Albino Council # New Mexico District 13 San Albino Knight Brothers, Ladies, Families & Friends, Praise God! Our beloved Basilica community has its Pastor and our Council has its Chaplain! Please join me in taking every opportunity to welcome Father Christopher Williams to our lives. Father Christopher joined our council last week at our regular monthly meeting and also agreed to become our chaplain, we are so very blessed. Father Christopher briefly addressed the brothers assembled and noted that he is a very active priest and is dedicated to working to activate the parish community in order to get as many of us to heaven as possible. This council has promised our support to Father Christopher and made it known that he should count on us as the strong right arm for the parish. I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your dedication and tireless support for the council and church during this past month. We held two fundraising events (the Sept 16 Taco Plato & the 50/50 Raffle), and also held two degree ceremonies (District-Wide Formation Degree on 9/20 and District-Wide Knighthood Degree on 9/24), not to mention the daily charitable works we all perform on our own. At the Taco Plato we sold around 330 plates and for the 50/50 raffle we ended up with 70 tickets sold. The council is now at a stable level in terms of its operating budget so we will turn our attention towards service, charity, and evangelization in the fall and winter. There are a few notable events coming up in October including the America Needs Fatima Rosary Rally on October 14th, a 5th Sunday Rosary and Recruiting Drive on October 28th and 29th, and the presentation of the Silver Rose to our council on October 31st. The Running of the Silver Rose is a decades old international tradition of the Knights of Columbus, and more information can be found at and en/columbia/detail/pilgrimage-silver-rose.html Please continue to pray for one another, there are a number of us that need the support and strength of prayer. Also, in this the month of the Most Holy Rosary please make a special effort to pray the rosary as often as possible. Vivat Jesus! 3 Knights of Columbus Insurance Corner A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner s Income While jobs may be safer in 2017, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage. Matthew Seltzer (575) matthew.seltzer@kofc.com matthewseltzer.com

4 The Holy Rosary "The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description." ~Archbishop Fulton Sheen~ LET US PRAY... Holy Father Pope Francis Most Rev. Bishop Oscar Cantu Most Rev. Ricardo Ramirez, Bishop Emeritus Very Rev. 7 From the Brothers Quarterly Council Activity Awards As a sign of the council officers appreciation for everybody s help we have started a quarterly raffle drawing to award council activity. If you have been active in the council during that quarter of the fraternal year (i.e. July to September is the first quarter), then your name will be put into the quarterly raffle. Activity means anything from prayer requests, meeting attendance, help at activities and service projects, to lumberjacking for trees-r-us. Each quarter we will draw three winners. At the council meeting last night we had our first drawing. It should be noted that there were 36 entries out of the 74 total members, which is an amazing 50% activity rate...great job! The winners last night were Kiki Vigil for an amazon gift card, Richard Lohmeyer for a caliche s gift card, and Victor Contreras for a caliche s gift card. All winners were also presented with a NM KofC state council pin of St. Teresa of Calcutta (pictured on the right). Our next quarterly activity drawing will be in December. Nuns in Chaparral in Need Brothers, through Assembly 3330, the local area councils are taking care of some of the material needs to a group on Nuns and Postulants in Chaparral. Their list of needs include: Fabric Softener, Ajax, Laundry Power Soap, Liquid Hand Soap, Dish Soap, Toilet Paper, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Facial Tissue, Cotton Swabs, Deodorant, Razors, Sanitary Napkins (normal), Knee Highs (sheer toe nude). We will be making a collection at our next council meeting on October 23rd. By the request of Mother Superior, please no unscheduled visits to the Nuns, all donations and support for them are being organized through the Assembly s Faithful Navigator Ricky Medina. Council Service Project Updates A few service projects are underway in the council, if you are interested in getting involved in any of them please feel free to contact Danny at dduffin@alumni.nd.edu. 1) Old Picacho Cemetery Cleanup on hold until the first frost of the year helps kill the large weeds in the area. 2) Recyling bins for Yannes Hall. 3) New TV and closed circuit camera for Basilica cry room. The Box Tops Story Brothers, just a quick note on the charitable strength of the Knights of Columbus. At the Organizational meeting in July, General Agent Jim McCabe noted that since its inception in 1996 the Box-Tops program has donated roughly 175 million to charity...compare that to what the Knights of Columbus donated just last year alone at 177 million. It s amazing what roughly 2 million brothers banded together can do...imagine the unstoppable force for good we d be if we had 5 or 10 million dedicated brothers! A rabbi, a priest and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says, "What is this, a joke?"

8 From the Brothers 40 Days for Life Vigil In Progress The Fall 2017 campaign will run from September 27 through November 5. Remember, the goal of our local 40 Days for Life vigils is to have at least 2 people praying peacefully on the public sidewalk outside our local abortion facilities in one-hour shifts to form an unbroken chain of prayer from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM each day for a period of 40 days. One vigil is being held at the notorious Hilltop abortion facility in El Paso TX, and a simultaneous vigil is being held just 20 minutes away in Santa Teresa NM. The two facilities belong to the same abortionist, who uses his second office to skirt abortion restrictions in the state of Texas by taking advantage of the lack of restrictions in New Mexico. This will be the first time he's ever experienced this amount of coordinated peaceful prayer from both sides of the state line! You can also sign up from home ahead of time and join one of our local prayer vigils at either 40daysforlife.com/elpaso or 40daysforlife.com/santateresa. Once you're logged in, simply click "Sign up for vigil hours" to see your local calendar and then sign up day by day, or better yet, click the link above the calendar that says "Create weekly calendar reservation" to sign up for the same hour each week between Sept 27 through Nov 5. ~Brother Mark Cavaliere~

9 From the Brothers Obituary: The Sad Passing of Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer asprin, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized that he was gone. Author Unknown
