With that in mind, I am happy to announce that there is no shortage of good-work opportunities to be had this month :) I would just like to take a few moments here highlighting some of our projects this month. The Parish food drive that we ve been running for the past several years is expanding. Starting this weekend, and continuing indefinitely, our monthly food drive will now become a WEEKLY FOOD DRIVE! The Knights will have their cart outside of every weekend Mass, so please feel to bring non-perishable foods any/every weekend. All of this food goes towards assisting our local food banks. 3 Knights of Columbus Insurance Corner Knights Stand Strong On Ethical Ground Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don t make it. We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life. In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. But don t just take our word for it. 7 From the Brothers V8 s for Vocations (excerpts from kofc.org story by Carl Bunderson) When a parishioner donated a beat up 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS in 2014, Father Matthew Keller saw it as a way to build fraternity among parishioners, mechanics and local car guys, many of whom are Knights. Father Keller, who is the New Mexico state chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, has been restoring hot rods for several years now. When he isn t celebrating Mass or hearing confessions, the best place to look for him tends to be the garage of Gallup s Sacred Heart Cathedral, fixing up a classic muscle car. This past summer, it was a carousel red 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible. The cars are raffled off to support the education of seminarians of the Diocese of Gallup, which is the poorest in the nation. The project, called V8s for Vocations, is a fruit of Father Keller s lifelong love of cars. God gave us gifts and talents, and growing up this was a big part of my life, he said. He was also inspired to use the opportunity to help support the diocese s seminarians. The initial project netted $140,000 in 2016, and this past year, the refurbished Firebird raised an additional $107,000 for seminarian tuition. Father Keller already has a car ready for next summer s raffle: a black 1978 Pontiac Trans Am with a K of C license plate on the nose. Three more cars have already been donated to the project as well: a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, a 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury, and a 1966 Chevrolet Caprice. People love the idea and want to participate in it, said Father Keller. God planted the seed and blessed it, and that s why it has grown so much on its own. We have to work God doesn t take that part away, but he really has blessed the results. 8 From the Brothers Cemetery Cleanup Community Service Project The Knights of Columbus Basilica de San Albino Council is organizing community event to remove weeds and brush from the cemetery in the village of Old Picacho. A local family has requested assistance in this project. The cleanup will take place on Saturday February 17, 2018 beginning at 10:00 am. and all are invited to assist with this project. The directions to the ½ acre cemetery are; North on Shalem Colony Trail into Old Picacho Village, left on Ladera Ave., right on Trucha Rd. to the dead end (across the road from the Water Works). Rakes, hoes, saws, gloves, and volunteers to use them will be greatly welcomed. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM prayer and medication to follow. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. is done. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance. The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new campaign slogan last Sunday: 'I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours.

The pictures above show how overgrown the plots and markers are and just how desperately this hallowed ground needs some maintenance and repairs. 12 Basilica de San Albino Council Dues Payment Giveaway!!! Brothers, your dues are critical to our council operating and charitable budget each year. We ve taken efforts this past year to lessen the dues burden on the membership and have reduced the annual dues from $60 to $40. Additionally, we now have the ability to charge your dues to your credit card (this must be done in person with the physical credit card in hand). As a bonus for 2018, we d like to say thank you to our loyal dues payers and appeal to the entire membership to pay your dues early.
