1 wellington square November 9, 2014 I VE BEEN THINKING of the important and varied benefits of observing Remembrance Day. We have a combined service this Sunday, so that we can all be together for the special messages around Nov 11 th. What themes or messages? Honouring past sacrifice- The several wars of the last century called on multiple generations to sacrifice normal life for years of hardship, suffering and loss. We who have come after we remember, and we are grateful. Service and sacrifice today. We have seen recent attacks on soldiers, for no other reason than they were in uniform. We grieve for them and their families. The ongoing strain of serving in the world s trouble-spots is still taking a toll. This week, one of my ministry colleagues The Transforming Power of Jesus Christ We believe Jesus Christ can bring real change in the human heart through grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We believe God s Holy Spirit is available and active in our world, our church and our lives, leading us in unity and propelling us with divine power. (continued on back page)

As With Silent Hearts Words of Commemoration We gather here today to remember before God all those who laid down their lives for us, for our country and for the freedom and spiritual values challenged and imperiled. In sorrow and yet with pride and thankfulness we remember them in the faith of him who said: Be faithful unto death and I will give you a crown of life. Before God, then let us call to remembrance those who for the sake of peace and justice served their country: sailors in the Navy and Merchant Marine, soldiers, airmen, members of the women s divisions of the navy, army and air force, physicians, nurses, chaplains, civilian personnel, especially those whose names are written deep within our own hearts, who we now present to God in grateful remembrance and praise. 6 New Challenge for Wellington Square: Sermon Small Groups For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. - Matt 18:20 Jesus promised us that although He would not be present with us in body, he would leave us with the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us. Each Sunday, we have a wonderful message! NOW, here's the challenge: Let s have 30 Sermon Small Groups by Christmas! How it Works: Ask a minimum of 2 people (maximum 6) to meet with you for a conversation about Sunday s message. This creates a small group! You may want to meet in a coffee shop, in your home, at the church, or in a restaurant. Also, you may want to meet weekly or bi-weekly. That is up to you! (If you want to meet at the church at any time, be sure you book a room through the office.) The Time Keeper By Mitch Albom In this story, Mitch Albom inspires us to appreciate the time given to us. Dor, known as Father Time, is the first person to measure time, leading people to great misery as they constantly yearn for more of it. As punishment, he is banished to a cave for centuries where he does not age but must listen to people's constant cries for more time. Eventually he is given a chance to redeem himself by helping two people: a dying, wealthy businessman and a desperately sad teenager. He gives them a glimpse of their future, leading them to an understanding of the true meaning of time. We will have a list of general questions available at the Connection Table for you. 7 Having reached our 5th year anniversary, we reflect on how we began and where we hope to go in supporting friends in our community. In the summer of 2009, a small group of men from Wellington Square organized dinners as a men's ministry initiative, to offer a meal and fellowship to friends in the community. From there other faith groups joined in to support the dinners. We were blessed by the support from Partnership West Food Bank that kept us afloat in the beginning years. Our numbers continued to grow, but even more importantly relationships grew stronger and new partnerships formed. We are now blessed to partner with over 15 different faith groups, a number of organizations, as well as some amazing folks in our community. It takes the hands of so many to do God's work in our community. When folks come through the doors they come for so much more than a meal. Many are looking for a community, friendship, someone who cares and someone to share a meal with. We have formed a community of people who are sharing life by leaning on each other, supporting one another through loss, and celebrating successes together. We welcome and encourage you to share your life with us as we journey in faith together. We provide opportunities for study, serving and growing deeper in our relationship with God. We believe that by working together, sharing our faith and our lives, we can accomplish much more than we could individually. With God s help and the power of the Holy Spirit, we believe we can transform our community and our world as the hands and feet of Jesus on earth. 9 PREPARE TO SHARE OUR CHRISTMAS JOY! Our opportunity to share with partners near and far is upon us again. With our offerings each week we support our many Outreach initiatives and try to understand their gifts, their culture, their faith and assist with their needs as we are able. It is our call as Christ followers and we do so, generously. Our Christmas Joy program is our chance to share Our Joy in giving, as we ve been so richly given by God. Our opportunities to share will be with Local Angel Wings Project, Support for the Wellington Orphanage in Sierre Leone, reaching out to the lost boys in Malawai through Prison Fellowship Ministry and celebrating with our family of faith at our Friday Night Community through filling of Christmas Stockings for their Christmas Dinner. Please watch for the insert in next week s bulletin and keep your ears and hearts open for where you could be nudged to help. In big and small ways Our Lord will use our gifts when they are given sincerely, joyfully and in LOVE. Thank you, Angel Wings What is Angel Wings? Angel Wings is one of Wellington Square s largest local Outreach project that has been in action for many years. We sponsor children and their families in need within Burlington..our Angels. When you sponsor an Angel you make your Angel selection from the posted list in St. Paul s Hall and buy them a selection of gifts from their Christmas Wish List. If you choose to donate cash, the money is used to buy food vouchers for the families that we support. This year we are supporting 90 Angels in the Burlington area. O God, have mercy upon his wounded spirit. Working and Praying for Peace For we as Christ-followers, (who serve the Prince of Peace), we live in an active tension between the dream of a world without violence and war, and the present reality of violent evil and oppression. For many decades, Canada s military were known as Peacekeepers. It is a very honourable role. However in more recent years, our military have had to confront evil with force. Jesus followers are always called on to seek peace and avoid violence. However, there are times when, in seeking the common good, evil must be confronted. So today and every year, while we remember, and honour the heroic service and sacrifice of so many, we also pray for wisdom, for fortitude, for compassion.
