At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction. When the disciples question Jesus' teaching, he confirms its truth. "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life." For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt? Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R., is a Redemptorist priest form Woburn, Massachusetts, about ten miles north of Boston. He entered the Redemptorist missionary order after attending Boston College and playing seven years of professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and overseas in Holland and Australia. He is a member of the Boston College Hall of Fame. Ordained in 1991, he has worked as a parish priest in Dominica, New York, Boston, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands. He is currently assigned to the Redemptorist Community in New Smyrna Beach, Fl. He is greatly looking forward to spending time with us. 5 5 FAITH FORMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY Catechists Needed This year HOLY ROSARY is in need of Catechists (teachers) for our Pre-K to Grade 5 Faith Formation Program for the following age levels: Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grade 3. Please contact Jeanine at or jeanine.morneault@portlanddiocese.org. Classes begin on September 9th! Faith Formation is in immediate need of two volunteers to be site coordinators for s and St. Denis K-5 program. The duties of this position have been streamlined, making it more manageable time wise and other wise. If you are interested in helping this program, please contact Stella Carlstrom at for more info. PS: you do not need a degree in theology! Bequeath Your Bottles!! PPB Youth Ministry Bottle Drive continues year round. You can donate your bottles to PPB Youth Ministry at: Rick s Redemption Center in Presque Isle and Bennett Drive Redemption in Caribou. Theology at Tim s Theology at Tim s welcomes high school youth. It provides an opportunity for Catholic fellowship in a casual forum where high school youth gather for challenging and relevant presentations on our faith and how it applies to daily life. It gives high school youth the opportunity to network with one another and be part of the larger Catholic community that extends beyond their Parish and Youth Ministry setting. Each session will begin with a social followed by a presentation given by a guest speaker and time for an informal discussion and Q&A period. Participants are welcome to enjoy food and beverages during the session (bring own money). Our fall session will kick off at Tim Hortons in Caribou on Sunday, September 16th at 6:30pm to 8:00pm "What Do You Stand For?" Deacon Luis SanClemente will present on how the decisions we make and the challenges we face to stand by our beliefs. Sometimes we are steadfast, sometimes we change. How reason and faith overlap in our lives to stay true to our faith. The Build a Disciple Fundraiser helped support several students to attend the Steubenville East Conference this July. Here are a few excerpts from a few students who attended the conference: Steubenville East Confernce a few words from our youth: Steubenville East is weekend event for high-school teens, hosted by the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, together with Lifeteen. They host conferences throughout the country, from Steubenville West in California, to Steubenville East in Lowell, Massachusetts, which is the retreat my group attended in July. It is filled with energetic live music, deep and challenging talks, and powerful hours of Eucharistic adoration. At the Steubenville East conference, the University of Massachusetts in Lowell hosts the weekend, with much of the sessions held in the Tsongas Center stadium. I had heard a lot especially about the power of the music and the holy hours, as well as the inspirational sight of so many Faith-filled youth on one campus, so I had high hopes for a great weekend. I definitely felt that, throughout the weekend, our whole group became more comfortable with sharing their experiences with Christ in their everyday lives versus their personal encounters with Him at this retreat. I think we all agreed to challenge ourselves to live our Faith more fully every day, even when we were in a far different setting from the spiritual setting of a retreat like Steubenville. I came out of this retreat with a more personal relationship with Christ, which I credit mostly to the outstanding night of Adoration which was held on Saturday, an experience which I encourage anyone, especially teens, to experience for themselves. I think now, that regardless of the expectations I had, God s love was revealed to me throughout the weekend in a way I couldn t plan for or expect, and it s so refreshing to be able to let go sometimes and give it all over to God, and I think that Steubenville East is a great opportunity to do just that.
