For those of us sincerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We commit to spending more time with our kids, but that one project still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today's Gospel is a small, intriguing look at this process in the life of St. Peter. First, Jesus' questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: "You are the Christ." Eager faith characterizes Peter's relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It's the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, "Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him." Jesus' rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter's caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as he declares, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don't follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. "'Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.'" Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every defeat is transformed into redemptive grace. "Whoever loses his life for my sake? will save it." Liturgical Publications Inc.

It s a weekend retreat for high schoolers to deepen their relationship with Christ. The weekend is packed with faith filled events like guest speakers, praise and worship time, adoration, Mass and so much more. This was my second year going. I had a lot of fun as well as a lot of time to reflect on what it means to be a man of God and what God calls me to do as a Catholic in today s society. Every year I feel closer and closer to God, whether it is through prayer or listening to talks by the guest speakers. It is a whole lot of fun, thank you so much to the people who donated for us to encounter the grade and love of God at the Steubenville East Conference. 5 5 Theology at Tim s Theology at Tim s welcomes high school youth. It provides an opportunity for Catholic fellowship in a casual forum where high school youth gather for challenging and relevant presentations on our faith and how it applies to daily life. It gives high school youth the opportunity to network with one another and be part of the larger Catholic community that extends beyond their Parish and Youth Ministry setting. Each session will begin with a social followed by a presentation given by a guest speaker and time for an informal discussion and Q&A period. Participants are welcome to enjoy food and beverages during the session (bring own money). Our fall session will kick off at Tim Hortons in Caribou on Sunday, September 6 th at 6:30pm to 8:00pm "What Do You Stand For?" Deacon Luis SanClemente will present on how the decisions we make and the challenges we face to stand by our beliefs. Sometimes we are steadfast, sometimes we change. How reason and faith overlap in our lives to stay true to our faith. FAITH FORMATION Thank You! We re asking all parishioners to speak to their children and grandchildren about becoming active in this program by building their up faith through teaching and learning. It s not too late to register your soul will be glad you did! Call to get started. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED QUESTION: Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? ANSWER: The mission of the Church reflects the mission of Jesus to teach, preach, heal, and forgive. Through these acts, Jesus shares the good news of salvation and invites all people to share in the life and love of God. The church continues this mission in all its ministries, but especially, and perhaps most importantly, through catechesis. Catechetical Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September. The task of handing on the Gospel is entrusted to the whole community, who by word and example, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. Parish programs assist parents in teaching the basics of faith through liturgical experience, instruction, and faith formation. This ministry is essential for the parish to grow, for individuals to develop as believers, and for the ongoing spiritual formation of the whole community. It reminds the church that preaching the Gospel and growing in faith are essential to our sacramental practice and our liturgical prayer. On this Sunday, we recognize those who are called to be teachers and ask for God's blessing and grace.

6 A Stewardship Message Parish Financial Stewardship 6 CONSISTENCY To be consistent is to be reliable, meaning, to be able to maintain a particular standard or repeat a particular task with minimal variation. I know each of us gives as much as we are able each week as we give our tithing. I know for myself, I calculate how much I can afford each week based on my salary. I have committed to give that amount each week. If I am absent one week, I put that envelope, with the money aside for next week, then place it in the offering basket with this week s envelope. I trust in my church for spiritual, emotional, and physical support. I don t know what I would do if some Sunday I wouldn t be able to attend or I was told no when I came expecting support. I have my church family and I treasure seeing them each week to give and receive support, love, and care. There is no greater joy than gathering with my friends, neighbors, brothers and sisters in worship to our Savior. I know God is interested in His people being consistent in their love, commitment, service, tithing, sacrifice and obedience. I pray for God to guide each of us in being consistent in giving weekly to our beloved Savior.
