"In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar...and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee...and Lysanias was tetrach of..." Did you need to pinch yourself awake during the first few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and political leadership of the time period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and we believe that everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason. These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas story isn't a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible in a precise moment in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Baptist is also a historical event. "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to repentance and the forgiveness of sins happened in a particular time and place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Palestine! God continues to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and what we anticipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in concrete ways in time and space. He did that 2,000 years ago, and He continues to do so today! This Sunday, examine your own Christmas preparations. Is there anything you need to repent of before the Christmas season? Are there low points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are their mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"? Are you making decisions that have moved you away from God? This Advent season is the time for them to "be made straight and made smooth." Prepare the way in your heart for Christ today! 4 4 Mission Diaper Brigade! YOUTH MINISTRY Diaper Mission Brigade The PPB Youth Ministry is on a mission, a SERVICE MISSION, during the month of December. We need your help to successfully complete this mission. The PPB Youth Ministry is collecting items for the Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook County. This Pregnancy Care Center life affirming ministry serving the pregnancy related concerns and educational needs of women and teens. The PCC offers emotional, spiritual, and material support to both our clients and their families. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to help PPB Youth Ministry collect size 5 & 6 diapers, wipes, desitin and baby wash. Donations can be dropped off at all Worship Sites as well as the Holy Rosary and St Mary s Rectory offices by December 30th. PPB Youth Ministry Happenings: Youth Masses are held at 9am at St. Mary s December 16 January 20 February 10** (second Sunday due to school vacation week) March 17 April 14 ** (second Sunday due to school vacation week) May 5 ( last Youth Mass for academic year) PPB Youth Ministry is selling magnets. Cost is $5 per magnet. Great way to share the faith and help out our youth! CHURCH & FAMILY LIFE COMMISSION ADVENT FAITH SHARING GROUPS The season of Advent is here and the Church begins a new Liturgical year. The season offers the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah and to be alert for his Second Coming. How will you prepare? I encourage everyone to prepare by participating in Small Christian Communities during the 4 weeks of Advent. Please contact the Parish office at for more information. Fr. Dave THE GIVING TREE is up at the front/side entrance at Holy Rosary Church, it is decorated with gift tags. Please take a tag, purchase a gift and return it wrapped with tag attached no later than Friday, December 14th. The gifts will be distributed with food baskets. The Caribou Choral Society presents its 42nd annual Christmas Concerts REJOICE & SING Saturday, Dec. 8, 7:00 at Holy Rosary Church, Caribou Sunday, Dec. 9, 3:00 at St. Mary s Church, Presque Isle. All are welcome to attend the free concerts; donations will be appreciated. Golden Age Turkey Dinner is Sunday December 16 th in the Parish Center at 2 PM. Special musical guests and great food. This event is open to all members of our parish 50 years of age or better. The Parish Cemetery Commission would like to thank the 20 youth from all over Northern Aroostook, Fort Kent, Van Buren, Presque Isle, Caribou, Madawaska, and Fort Fairfield who helped adults Herm Lagassie and some Knights of Columbus clean up St. Mary s North Main cemetery. They moved brush, racked, weeded and general clean up on Sunday afternoon, September 30, The committee would like to give a special thank you to Theresa Bonner for coordinating the work and Herm Lagassie for preparing the brush detail the week before. Children s Christmas Eve St. Denis Rehearsals will be held for the next three Sundays; Dec. 9, 16, and 23 at 10:00 AM in the Church basement at St. Denis in Ft. Fairfield to prepare for the Christmas Eve Children s Mass at St. Denis. We need Lectors, Choir members, Altar Servers, Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and children to carry up manger pieces during the Offertory procession. Visiting children are welcome to participate.
