Which parable do you find useful in more fully understanding the mystery of the kingdom of heaven? Wisdom 12:13, According to the Jewish sage who wrote Wisdom, what are some of the attributes of God? Romans 8:26-27 Paul writes of the Spirit aiding us in our weaknesses. In this regard, where do you see the Spirit at work in your life today? LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Today we are presented with the parable of the weeds and the wheat. We struggle with the imperfection that exists in our world. This imperfection shows itself in human sinfulness with its consequences--disease, natural disasters, suffering, and even death. We wonder why God did not simply make everything perfect right from the beginning so that harmony, peace, and tranquility would be the norm. God builds free will into us and into our world so that we can learn to freely love him. Anything less than this would not provide the freedom to choose to acknowledge and develop our relationship with our Creator. For now, the weeds and the wheat must coexist. Our faith teaches us that we live and walk in hope that when the harvest comes only the

3 Parish Life cont... CALLING ALL TEENAGERS! Its not too late to register!! Teen ACTS retreat is being held July at the Christian Life Center in Frenchville. Cost is $100 for the whole weekend including room & board, all the meals and materials for the retreat! All incoming freshman to high school seniors are invited to attend. Come join other youth from across the county for a retreat like no other, you will be glad you did! First Friday Masses at Mizpah: Masses will be held on the following dates: August 4 th, September 1 st, and October 6 th. Congratulations to the winners. Your donations help your local organizations donate to our Church, Walk Around the Pond at Mizpah: A walk-athon around the pond will be held on August 20th at Mizpah. For every $5 donated a lighted bag in memory of a survivor or lost love one of Cancer will be placed around the pond. The monies from such events goes toward the continued care of the Mizpah foundation which in turn keeps Mizpah s dreams to come to pass. The next dream is to have a house that was donated moved on the grounds for Cancer patients to utilize as a retreat house for a day or two. I'd also like to let you know that we are thankful to the kids, too, for their fantastic attitudes of caring for each other--and for us adults as well. We had an incentive for them that allowed them to also express their concern for less fortunate people in our world: for each time a child demonstrated an extraordinary example of caring for each other, the volunteers, or the environment, they received a "You're Good Stuff" Card. Each card was valued at fifty cents, and they earned nearly 200 cards. So, we were able to donate $100. in their name to the Oxfam America organization to help them provide food and care for people starving in unprecedented famines in parts of Africa. We're really proud of these Kids! ~Fr. Community Events Aroostook Retired Senior Volunteer Program: is seeking a volunteer to pick up the Meals on Wheels at the Borderview Nursing Home and deliver to individual Van Buren residents, as well as to the Van Buren Community Center meal site for seniors. This would take about 1.5 hours each week day (M-F). This is a volunteer position but you would be reimbursed for your mileage. The Meals on Wheels program has been a successful in providing meals for the home bound and low-income. 5 WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: July 26 is the feast of Joachim and Anna. Who are they and what do we know about them? Answer: Joachim and Anna are the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus, yet there is absolutely no biblical reference to them whatsoever. So where do we get their names, and what is their story? Their names are found in an apocryphal gospel known as "The Infancy Gospel of James." Apocryphal, or hidden, gospels consist of accounts of Jesus' life that were ultimately not accepted as inspired works, and thus were not included in the Bible. However, they sometimes captured the Christian imagination, spilling into the devotional dimension of the community. James' infancy gospel begins with the parents of Mary and their desire for a child. In their prayer and petitions to God, they are heard and given the blessings of a child, whom they named Mary. The fact that we celebrate the feast of Joachim and Anna indicates that the bond of family love is important in the Christian life. Long before Grandparents' Day was established, the church had a feast that honored the presumed grandparents of Jesus. While their names are part of noninspired apocryphal legends, the Savior's human ancestry is not. Christ, the incarnate Word, dwelt among us in the flesh in a human family. In honoring the grandparents of Jesus we really proclaim our faith in the Incarnation--God becoming human!
