Autumn Clean Thank you to everyone who came to help clean All Saints at the beginning of November. Windows were dusted, pews and brasses polished and resident spiders removed, while the churchyard was divested of its leaves (if only for a short time before the wind blew again!). Particular thanks to Norman and Anne Carlisle for all their work in the churchyard all year round and to Dries for organising the Mowing Rota. Thanks also to everyone who cleans All Saints on a regular basis throughout the year. If anyone would care to join our church Cleaning Rota next year, please let us know the more the merrier! Remembrance Sunday Although All Saints Church was not attended by the Royal British Legion this year, there was no less emotion felt by the congregation who came to remember those who have died to give us freedom. As many of you will know the Revd Denise Brown has badly broken her arm and was unable to take the service. However, Alexandra and Ian calmly and capably stepped into the breach. The collection of 229 has been sent to our local British Legion. Safari Supper Although we were away and unable to attend, we understand that everyone who did had a particularly enjoyable evening with people they had perhaps not mingled with before. As far as we know, no-one got lost on their way back to the village hall for the final part of the evening, although some were rather later than planned! When everyone finally wended their way home in

4 the early hours, Alan, who with Avice was delighted about winning the raffle, was last seen meandering down Main Street, swinging the basket of goodies from the crook of his arm! Comments such as a great village bonder and a gloriously refreshing event were received by our ever hard-working crew Alexandra, Rosanne and Sue (with strong backing from their other halves). So, many thanks to them for organising such a riotous evening and to all who participated, especially the wonderful hosts, without whom the evening would not have been such an overwhelming success. Just over 1,000 was made for church funds, which is around 10% of All Saints annual expenses. Christmas Services On a more sober note, as in other years there are services at All Saints Church for everyone over Christmastide. So, join us at the Carol service and afterwards enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie next door at The Old Rectory, (thank you to James and Lucy for offering their home!). The church collection will be donated to our local Air Ambulance. In addition, let the children remind you of the Christmas story at the Crib service on Christmas Eve (4pm) before celebrating Midnight Communion (11.30pm) here with us. As All Saints is hosting the Midnight Communion this year, there will be no service here on Christmas Day. However, there are numerous other services throughout the benefice and these will be posted on the notice board at All Saints, as well as on the website. ( At all of the Christmas services we will be accepting unwrapped gifts, in particular toiletries and socks, primarily for men. These will then be sent to Loose Ends, the charity that meets the practical needs of the homeless in the Newbury area. Tree of Remembrance From 1 st December there will be a small Tree of Remembrance in church in addition to the traditional Christmas tree, with a supply of labels. The church is generally open most days and everyone is welcome to come in, fill in a label for, or in memory of, a loved one and attach it to the tree. They will then be remembered in our prayers at services over Christmas. New Year The first service of 2012 to be held in the benefice will be at St Mary s Church, Chieveley on Sunday 1 st January at 11.00am. Date for your Diary: Saturday 4 th February 2012 Winter Warmer make a note in your new diaries and keep the evening free. Contacts: If you have anyone or anything specific you would like mentioned in church prayers at services throughout the year, do speak to either Ian (281625) or Alexandra (281306). If you would like to organise a baptism, wedding or funeral or would like to talk to a member of the clergy for any other reason, ring Revd John Toogood (our Rector) on or him on cwando@btinternet.com We would like to wish everyone in West Ilsley a very Happy Christmas. VILLAGE FIREWORKS The Village Hall Committee would like to thank lots of people who made Bonfire Night possible. This year it was a real team effort so Thanks to The Village Trust, Fete, Cricket Club and The Harrow for donating funds for the fireworks. Thanks to Richard for the use of his field, organising the bonfire and more. Thanks to Angela, Alison, Marnie and their team for the fantastic barbecue and Mulled Wine. Pete for setting up the barbecues and organising the lights. Thanks to Tony for buying the fireworks, Tony and Neil for all the preps on the day and Tony, Phil, Hugh and Neil for lighting up. It was a great show. Thanks to Alan and Amanda for fantastic bucket shaking. Finally thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed! Neil has stepped down after 2 years on the job. The role includes taking minutes etc for the meetings which are held three or four times a year and looking after the paperwork that goes with the hall. Please contact him for more details (281325, neil@westilsley.com ) Some extra volunteers on the committee would also be much appreciated so please think carefully if you could spend some time to help this valuable village resource. Also, the committee would like to be able to run Christmas Bingo but in order to do so will need some extra help. 5 PARISH PLAN UPDATE Very many thanks to all who have returned their Questionnaires, we have had a fantastic response rate at nearly 60% of all households completing Questionnaires and if it is still sitting on your kitchen table, it is not too late to return it to Anna Sugden (but is too late for the prize draw!). The three lucky winners of 50 vouchers for The Harrow were: Ian Fewtrell-Smith, Juliet Lamb and Tony Elliot. The next stage is collating all the data and analysing the results (volunteers needed please), we will then put forward an Action Plan and present this to the Village. If anyone has any free time in mid January and would like to be involved in the next stage, please contact Anna Sugden annasugden@btconnect.com or Remember this is our Plan for our Village. Aldworth Saturday Market (ASM) WINTER OPENING HOURS Please note that in January, February and March 2012 ASM will open every Saturday, for just two hours, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. You may, however, wish to preorder your fruit and vegetables, cakes, bread, papers etc. for 24 th December on Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2012 to all our customers, supporters and friends. Contact: Kathy Neville Update for November Here is the latest update for the Downlands Area from PCSO C8851 Andrew Whitaker. The latest crime statistics can be found by visiting which provides helpful information about crime and policing in your area. It shows the crime figures for your area by entering your location in the search box on the main screen. This allows instant access to street-level crime maps and data, as well as details of the neighbourhood team and providing useful crime prevention advice. From the 14th November 2011 there will be a new national single non-emergency number to call the police which will replace the current number. The new national number is 101 and will cost just 15p for the entire call. In an emergency you should still dial 999. Don't worry if you forget the change in number as both numbers will run side by side until the end of March Rural crime has seen a large increase during October, especially around the Brightwalton area. We are following any leads that we have but if you have seen anything suspicious that may help please call it in as it may have significance. Between the 19th October and the 1st November there have been 4 rural thefts recorded in the Downlands that has seen garages broken in to and specific equipment stolen. If you would like crime prevention advice in regards to your property then please get in touch. There have been reports of livestock thefts in the early hours of the morning in the Beedon area. Should you see something suspicious please call it in if it turns out that all is in order the land owners are always happy that we have come out to check. Hare coursing has been prevalent across the Downlands area in October. Offenders from all over the country have been coming into the area to commit hare coursing and poaching offences. In the process they commit criminal damage and public order offences against land owners and gamekeepers. One of our priorities is to deter offenders from coming into the area and bring them to justice. Three offenders attended court on 1st November in relation to hare coursing offences from April. They have all received fines which amounted to over 1,500 and have received restraining orders. In October we made 9 arrests of offenders who were caught on the area. These had travelled from Wales and Southampton to commit offences. Our Rural Text Alert scheme has been working very effectively of late to allow land owners to

6 know when suspicious and offending vehicles are around the area. The scheme is free of charge and can be a great assistance to both police and the rural community alike. If you would like to know more or sign up to the scheme please contact deborah.morton@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk Near to the Downlands Area there have been reports of numerous thefts of dogs. The offenders have been targeting rural locations and have been telling members of the public that they are out looking for their lost dog as a diversion tactic. A silver VW Golf has recently been recovered which the offenders were thought to be using and is currently undergoing forensic examination. A rave took place on The Ridgeway close to West Ilsley in October. Several arrests were made in relation to drug offences. Although some litter may have been left most was cleared up by offenders before they left. Reports of anti-social behaviour have decreased across the Downlands. Despite this there has been a report of quad bikes being driven antisocially on the Ridgeway. We will continue to patrol these large rural areas regularly and if you see vehicles being driven anti-socially please contact the police so we can deal with the problem. Anti Social Behaviour will remain a priority across the area. As the local PCSO I spend as much time as possible across the Downlands, whether this is engaging with the community, dealing with crime enquiries or helping to deter crime from happening. Should you have any concerns or would like to see me please do not hesitate to get in touch my address is Andrew.Whitaker@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk. If a crime is taking place call 999, or to officially report a non-emergency crime please call (or 101 from November 14th 2011). A great deal of information can be found on the Thames Valley Police website under the Crime Prevention tab. This includes information on Animal and Rural Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour, Vehicle Crime, Domestic Abuse, Personal Safety and much more. I am working hard to promote community messaging and the benefits it has for our community. It is a free service that provides information to subscribers about crime and police activity in their area via phone or . It also includes information on what we and our partner services are doing to bring offenders to justice or combat anti-social behaviour, and information on opportunities for local residents to raise concerns with their local policing teams. More information can be obtained directly from me or via our website, and you can sign up here too: rtal/startup.aspx ILSLEY UNDER FIVES This term has certainly been about sheltering as the weather changes outside and is starting to get cold We have welcomed a few new families also to the group which is great, especially the new families who have moved to the village and surrounding villages. Hopefully giving them a new activity on a Wednesday morning as well as meeting new people who are more than likely to be near neighbours! Having seen a few big brothers and sisters starting school this term, we did welcome them back for a busy half term under 7's session which was a lot of fun for them. Also we have been very spoilt recently with a few mums baking special treats for snack time, seems like the competition for best baker has begun!! For all you dads out there don't be shy in bringing your children along if mum s not around, as a few brave dad's have ventured to the playgroup this term and have ( I'm sure...) quite enjoyed it! As a group we are all looking forward to Christmas with a few special treats planned at our annual Christmas party happening in mid December. Ilsley Under 5's is a well established parent and carer playgroup which in partnership with Surestart provides a great place to play in a friendly safe atmosphere and fun environment. We meet every week in West Ilsley village hall between 10am and 11.30am. The children have a snack and drink half way through the session, with tea and coffee available for mums dads and carers. Every week we offer a new activity table; painting, drawing, play dough etc, not forgetting the regular toys that are available and suit all ages of toddler or baby. And we finish the session with a group sing along. If you are planning a party or event remember the small tables and chairs as well as our toys are available for hire throughout the year for a donation of 10. Call myself for more details. Kate Storrar AUTUMN GROUP The Autumn Group is now in its 3rd year catering in the main for the over 60 s meeting in West Ilsley Village Hall on alternate Tuesdays between 2pm and 4pm. The afternoon revolves around pleasant company, tea, sandwiches, fresh cakes and a general chat and of course a raffle. It is good that we are well attended with people coming from all the local villages. We have speakers to all sessions. To date we have had talk from a local author, Esther Fairfax who brought along copies of her book. Other topics covered have been Well Being, Beekeeping, Astrology, Citizens Advice, the Samaritans, the East Ilsley History Society (local pubs & breweries), Fire Officer, a Hearing Therapist from the Royal Berkshire Hospital, by

7 Sovereign Housing about their Care Alarm System, Lucy Samara on Wills and Power of Attorney, Ray Prior on birds of prey and he brought along many of his birds. All this for only 2 per session. The group is open to all ages and all from the Ilsleys and neighbouring villages.
