Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH May, 2018 MINSTRY ARCHITECTS CONSULTATION UNDERWAY Your Renovation Team and Session met with consultants Stephen Ingram and Drew Hulse Monday Wednesday, April 23-25, for a Quick Start Summit and we are underway in our efforts to enhance our effectiveness and efficiency here at Trinity. As we look at the big picture at Trinity, we encourage all ministry teams to continue their good work and not to stop their working or planning, as if Ministry Architects replaces our activities. We identified those matters to address this summer and mapped out the timeline of further matters to be explored and developed for the next 18 months. We have designated the next 18 months (through July of 2019) a time of developing the culture and mindset for our church operations, revitalizing our growth, and building the infrastructure for Trinity Presbyterian that will sustain our momentum for years. The scope of our work will be intentional and incremental, the momentum will be cumulative, with some immediate results and some results down the road. We aim to build sustainable and repeating successes and to develop a new culture at Trinity for how we work together as Session, teams, task forces, staffers, volunteers, and members. Members of the Renovation Team are Pat Patterson, Eileen Mignerey, Jason Jones, Jack Lurton, and Stephanie Peterson. Leah McCreary and pastors Hugh and Brian are ex-officio members. Some salient points from the Elders discussion: We need to TRAIN our volunteers for the tasks/ministries to which we call them. We do a poor job of setting people up to succeed at their tasks and, hence, encourage burnout. Elders need to transition from being workers handling tasks to become worker/managers of volunteers who assist and share the myriad tasks/responsibilities. Team chairs need training in how to lead groups/teams and how to share with the congregation stories of our workings and successes. We need better communication practices in place. What we are targeting this summer: Three deliverables: Mission Statement for the Church: Specific and reflective of who we are. Values: How do we go about doing our ministry here? Ministry Goals: Define 1, 3 and 5-year goals. Overhaul of Trinity Website and church membership data management system. Website updated with a clean sweep of the entire site for accurate and useful information, programming, calendar, and contact information. Church membership rolls will be updated; systems to track members attendance, visitors, and follow-ups will be evaluated for gaps, and procedures created to remedy those gaps. Worship Visioning: What do people desire our worship to look like, contain, express? How do we plan and conduct worship to be more seamless with intention, integrity, and integration of our musical styles? What is our desired purpose for Wednesday Night supper and programming at Trinity? We continue our competing agendas and constituencies. Depending on who you talk to, we contradict each other as to whether Wednesday night is about education, adult small groups, youth/children music, youth/children discipleship, intergenerational fellowship, featured speakers about local community initiatives or about in-house church initiatives. Staffing and Committee structures and operations: How do we structure to become more effective and efficient? How do we better assimilate people s talents, passions, abilities into the ministries of Trinity? A written game plan for internal communication to the Trinity Presbyterian family. Online giving and payment options have been researched and we plan to offer this by June. Communicating at least monthly about the progress of the renovation of the church. We anticipate a busy summer with you involving lots of interaction and discoveries, leading to lasting benefits. The Prayer Team will support us and seek God s Holy Spirit to bless us all in our endeavors. Thank you for your support and participation in this arduous but exciting enterprise! Your servant in Christ,
Page 2 Trinity Tidings Notes from Brian The school year is drawing to a close; summer is fast approaching but that doesn t mean any let up for our youth. We re extremely grateful that our youth can participate in several trips this summer. It will mean some serious hours in passenger vans and several nights sleeping on church floors but what awaits us this summer is well worth it. Like previous summers, the Mid Highs will travel to Mo-Ranch for the Jr. High Jubilee, and the Senior Highs will attend the Montreat Youth Conference. Our new trip will take us to eastern Kentucky a mission trip with a fantastic organization, Leader Treks. Mo-Ranch and Montreat are familiar to many of you, so I d like to tell you about the mission trip and our partnership with Leader Treks. Leader Treks design their mission trips with two goals in mind: Help youth develop and sharpen leadership skills and characteristics. Nurture spiritual formation and help youth identify the ways God has equipped them to serve God s Kingdom. Our mission site is located in Manchester, Kentucky. We ll partner with a local church and a Leader Treks representative to serve the local community of Manchester, KY. We ll be involved in a service project, run VBS for community kids, and learn about the issues that plague this community. The youth participants will not simply follow directions but will be charged with key leadership roles and decisions. There will be lots to do and build, but throughout the trip the youth will take time to study scripture and discuss what they re learning. Each morning we will spend 45 minutes in a devotional and end each night with worship and a group conversation about what we learned during devotions and how we see God working in and through the group. Leader Treks wants every part of the trip to be an intentional effort to equip youth not just for short-term mission trips but to equip them to be disciples every day, whether at school, the athletic field, or at home. These summer trips are the fruit of an incredible amount of hard work and sacrifice. It requires a lot from parents and youth to make the trips possible, so thank you to all who have worked the Rummage Sale and contributed financially to the trips. As our youth prepare for these trips I hope you can find an opportunity to talk with them about their trip and speak with them when they return. Ask them what they hope to get out of the experience and how you can pray for them during the trip. Parents, talk with your child about the purpose of summer trips and why you think it s important they have this wonderful, enriching opportunity. We can t wait to share with the congregation all that was experienced and learned this summer! Grace & Peace, Brian Class of 2018 Congratulations to our Senior Ryan Obray! Ryan will be attending the University of West Florida this fall.
Page 3 Trinity Tidings Two Special Events on Mothers Day Trinity Presbyterian Women plan Celebrations Mothers Day will be even more special than usual with two events on tap at Trinity on May 13th. During Sunday worship services, a special someone will receive the 2018 Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership award. The annual award is given to a member who has demonstrated outstanding service in our church and community. After worship services, the entire congregation is invited to greet the recipient in the Trinity parlor, and enjoy birthday cake and refreshments. Birthday cake??? Why, of course! Birthday cake will be served to celebrate the 2018 Birthday Offering of Presbyterian Women. The offering supports several missions in critical need, chosen by a select committee. Here's a glimpse of the 2018 grant recipients: Cottage Village, in Cottage Grove, Oregon: Cottage Village will provide quality, affordable housing in a safe community for families with very low incomes. The offering will help build 13 tiny houses for vulnerable, rural citizens. Village of Grace Center for Physical and Spiritual Health, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras: The grant will assist the Honduras Presbytery to buy this center, established by Presbyterian mission workers. The center will provide international hospitality for retreats, workshops and teams from PCUSA. The Dwelling Place, in Minnesota: This center, established in 1998, offers a safe shelter for women and children suffering from domestic violence in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area. The shelter serves the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of victims, by offering support services, food, clothing, and mentoring. The Dwelling Place will use the grant to buy a vacant lot to construct a multi-use building for safe shelter, large and small group programs, staff offices, along with client education and counseling. The new building will help even more women and children seeking safety. We sincerely hope you will join us for these celebratory moments at Trinity, and consider contributing to the Birthday Offering special missions program.
Page 4 Trinity Tidings Thank you so much for your continued prayers. Within about the next 10 days, I will meet with two surgeons to discuss further surgery for these legs. Hopefully this further surgery will help cut down the swelling problems that have occurred since all this happened. Thank you again for your continued prayers. I look forward to the day I can travel again. Love, Rosemary Mika I d like to thank everyone for their prayers. Even though my cancer is in remission I still need your prayers. The cancer still could come back, but I hope not. My next test for cancer will be in October. The Lord hears us and answers our prayers. My faith is strong and if it is His will, I will be here a while longer to serve Him. God s Love, Peace and Blessings to you. Marianne Fortuna (John s mom) Many heartfelt thanks to everyone at Trinity who has prayed for me this past 19 months. The power of prayer has truly saved my life. In August I was told that there was a mass in my heart and was undergoing further testing when it miraculously disappeared. The only explanation is divine intervention. The other was on the day of my latest surgery when I had a post-op hemorrhage and was transfused with 9 units of blood and/or blood products. I felt calm and knew I was in the Lord's hands and that he was taking care of me. I am cancer free and there is no reason that I will not stay that way. I cannot thank you adequately for all your love and prayers. Also I want to thank Libby McWilliams for restarting the Cancer Support Group. Marge Shimmin Please continue to be in prayer for the family of Brett Norman. Brett passed away on April 21, and we grieve with his mother Jean, his wife Kate, and their sons Everett and Owen. There will be a burial service on Saturday, May 12th at 11:00 am at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens, 1985 W. 9 Mile Road, Pensacola, Florida. 6 Page 6 Trinity Tidings Do You Believe In Miracles? GOD IS AT WORK IN OUR WORLD! Every morning when I awake, I know intellectually that God is and has been at work in our lives. However, sometimes like the disciple Thomas, I desire visible proof. At these times, the Lord gives me a slap on the forehead as a reminder to trust him and to pay attention. The following is such an example of his glorious work and a reminder to trust him to act in grand ways. The Trinity Service Committee has been reviewing, investigating, and advocating for a Legacy Grant for Pastor Inga Scott of Women with Clear Vision (WCV), to enable the purchase of a van replacing one that is out of service to assist clients of her women and children s shelter to get to education, job training, and health appointments. While awaiting approval for funding, Pastor Scott has worked with a salesman at Pete Moore Chevrolet to hold various vans for 3-4 days to see if the funding had come through and then release them for sale if not. On Friday 4/20/18, we were able to assure her that the grant had been approved and the check was coming in 3 days. To her disappointment, the reserved van had been sold. Pastor Scott then went to the auto dealership and, seeing that her usual salesman was with a client, she began to walk around the car lot. She spotted a salesman who was not busy, introduced herself to him and explained her shelter s needs. The salesman, first confirming where the shelter was located, appeared amazed! He then shared with her that his sister had been a resident of the WCV shelter during a bad time of her life, troubled with divorce, drug dependency and homelessness. Your shelter turned her life around and she is now a totally different person, employed and living in a home of her own, drug free! I am going to find you a van, he assured. They did find a more expensive, newer van than the grant allowed with some additional features that helped access with disabled clients. He checked with his manager and came back with a bill of sale for the Grant amount and gave her the keys! The purchase funds were given to Pete Moore Chevrolet on Monday 4/23/18 and the van is now in use at the shelter. Praise to the Lord for his completing the good work begun by Pastor Scott, our Trinity Community, and Iris Suber s legacy! We all need to trust Him to not only act but act grandly in our world for good! William B. Blanchard Chairman, Trinity Service Committee
MEET OUR NEW GENERAL PRESBYTER The Rev. Dr. Roy A. Martin, Jr. has accepted the position of General Presbyter for our Presbytery of Florida. Roy began his work March 1 and will be installed at the May 19 th presbytery meeting at First Presbyterian of Marianna. His phone number is (850) , ext. 1, and address is rmartin@presbyteryofflorida.com Biography: Roy s father was an elder in the Disciples of Christ Church and his mother was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Roy grew up attending worship and other functions in both churches until age 11, when he went through Communicant s Class at and joined The Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, VA. Page 7 Trinity Tidings As a high school student Roy served on his church s Christian Education committee and went on a presbytery youth mission trip to Mexico. The minister who led that trip saw something in Roy which led him to nominate Roy to be a Youth Advisory Delegate to the PCUS General Assembly. That experience awakened in Roy a deep interest in how the Church did its work, and at the request of the Moderator of the Assembly Roy served as one of two youth members of an ad interim committee to study whether or not Synods were a needed part of our denominational structure. Roy shares that, The adult members of that committee were a veritable who s who of Presbyterian leaders at both the presbytery and synod level, and what I learned from them about the functions of the various councils of the church was priceless. During his high school and college summers Roy was a counselor at Camp Massanetta, Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where he later served as Camp Director while attending Union Seminary. Education: 1979, B.A., Religion, The University of Mary Washington. 1983, D.Min., Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA Student Minister Intern, Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC. Prior Service to the Church: Associate Pastor, St. Mark s Presbyterian Church, Bayonet Point, FL Pastor, Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Lake City, FL Transitional presbyter for Shenandoah VA Presbytery Roy writes: During my 35 years in ministry, I have had the honor of serving the Church in a variety of ways: camp ministry, campus ministry, Synod commissioner, commissioner to two General Assemblies, chairing COM and CPM, serving on church-related agency boards, and a PJC. I am grateful for the variety of service I have been permitted to render over the years. As I look back on my life, I can see clearly the hand of God guiding me. I am thankful to God for the many men and women in the Church who mentored me and modeled for me what it means to be a faithful Christian in service to Christ through the Church. Through family and Church, my life has been richly blessed. Family: Two adult children, Caroline, who lives with her family in Lake City, and Sam, who lives in St. Augustine. Grandfather to two young ladies, Rachel and Mary Elizabeth. August 2017 Roy married the Rev. Lisa Wilson, who serves as pastor of Woodstock Presbyterian Church in VA. Meet Roy May 6, 2pm at First Presbyterian Church as our west district churches gather for a presbytery planning workshop.
