1 TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings MARCH,, 2016 Happy Easter, Dear Friends! UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS As a child, Annie Dillard used to hide a precious penny for someone to find. She hid them just for the fun of surprising someone. Sometimes she would draw directional arrows on the sidewalk to lead someone to their discovery, then she would hide and watch as some unknown passerby found her free gift from the universe. Annie Dillard believed, The world is fairly studded and strewn with lucky pennies flung everywhere from God s generous hand. I agree. I believe in God s providential care that can bring blessings out of life s curses and pains. We may only see the hidden treasures in retrospect, so as you reflect on your life during Lent, don t look just for your downfalls, look also for the hidden blessings in your past and present life, signs of God s wide-flung blessings! Easter s blessing of life after death was unexpected. Our community is putting the pieces back together after last week s February 23, 2016 tornadoes. Families sifting through the debris are reclaiming lost treasures and precious memorabilia. They are describing hidden blessings they did not appreciate until after the fact, blessings they had taken for granted, and new blessings of people coming to help and to comfort them. Russell Queen described to me today the elderly woman who stopped her car, hobbled up their driveway and to their destroyed house, just to give them a hug. A hug and her prayer were all she had to offer, but what a precious offering it was to them! If you never look for the unexpected, you will find only the expected and predictable, but if you are open to God s grace in Jesus Christ and the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit, you will discover God doing a new thing in you and you will find many, many, pennies from heaven! Don t worry if you don t have life figured out, buttoned down, organized, and neatly packaged. Enjoy the gifts of God s unexpected ways and turns in the unfathomable, joyful, precious, mystery of life. 2 Page 2 Trinity Tidings My beautiful wife Patricia L. Myers passed away on the 14th of January. I always showed her the signatures you all sent her each month. Thank you, Bob Myers, loving husband Dear Trinity Church, Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality and providing us such a nice place to stay. Thanks for inviting us to your church dinner. We greatly enjoyed meeting members of your congregation. We have had a great time staying here in Pensacola. Thanks for the work you do with Habitat for Humanity. Thanks again, Concordia College Habitat for Humanity. SLIPPER DRIVE: Lindsey Lawrence and her 4 th grade class are collecting slippers for the children of Sacred Heart Hospital. For more information call Mrs. Armentrout at by March 11. HELPING HANDS MINISTRY: If you could use a hand with a project around your home or you're able to lend a hand, please contact Dave Blodgett at or Easter Lilies! Please sign up in the narthex on Sunday mornings if you would like to contribute toward the decorations for Easter Sunday and purchase a lily in loving memory of or in honor of someone. OUR FLOWERING CROSS Holy Week, the last week of Lent, immediately preceding Easter/Resurrection Sunday, is observed to commemorate and enact the suffering (Passion) and death of Jesus. Maundy Thursday (Mandare, to command ) observes Jesus commandment to love one another as He loves us. Good Friday commemorates Jesus arrest, trial, suffering, crucifixion, death and burial. Our cross is draped in black, mourning the death of Jesus. On Easter Sunday, the black drape is removed, the top draped in white and the cross is covered with real flowers to symbolize the new life that God brings out of the death of Good Friday. PLEASE BRING FLOWERS as you arrive at church on Easter, March 27 and place them on the cross, adding to our striking, beautiful symbol of Resurrection, Victory and Joy! UNITED MINISTRIES is looking for volunteers for telephone intake. If you are interested, or need more information, please call or director@united-ministries.com. LIBRARY NOTES - Your Library Board has been trying to make it easier for you to find new and interesting books for you to read. There is a section near the front door which has several suggestions, and we have here two new books recommended: 1. "ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCEELLO'S LIBRARY" by Chris Grabenstein. (An Advanced Youth book) Kyle Keeley is a dedicated board game player - often against his two older brothers. When he was lucky enough to be chosen to compete in a brand new, invitation only, lock in game by the world's most famous game maker, he finds that getting in is easy. Getting out of the Library will take a lot more effort and expertise, and the stakes have never been higher! Can you figure it out? 2."SOMEWHERE SAFE WITH SOMEBODY GOOD" is the twelfth book in Jan Karon's "At Home in Mitford" series. Fans of these books will be glad to learn that the main characters Father Tim Kavanagh and his wife have returned home to Mitford after their travels to Ireland. This is a "feel good" story which will leave readers wishing for more. For those who have not read the previous books, it is still worth reading and you might wish that you also lived in Mitford. "Somewhere Safe" in the Trinity Library is in large print. Enjoy! Art in the Library - Starting March 6th through April 10! Look for our wondrous Children's Art works blessing the Library walls.

6 CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICE PROJECTS Plan: March 13th: Meal Baskets for Home bound members April: Appreciation Cards for Foster Parents August 7th: Muffins for Teachers August November: Christmas Shoe boxes Page 6 Trinity Tidings The Children & Youth Sunday School classes join together 4 times per year for a service project. This time together will offer an opportunity to express their love and care for one another while serving other sheep of His flock. Each year the Christian Education Team looks at projects that benefit locally, nationally, globally and within our own congregation. During one Sunday school hour the children and youth will work together to complete a project in which they can identify with the need and the lesson learned through Biblical teachings. Each project will be led by a different team of volunteers who have a passion for the project s cause. We ask for the parent s support with these projects. The children & youth will receive a list of items they will supply for each project. Only one class period will be used for each project so attendance will be essential. If anyone wishes to help with any of the four projects, please contact Colette Obray. Many will benefit from your assistance. Past Projects include: Appreciation Cards for Foster Care Parents in Tri-County Area Back Packs full of school Supplies for Foster Children Parlor Snacks for the Congregation Muffins for Cordova Park Elementary Staff on First Day of School Baby Kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes Meal Baskets for Home Bound members of Trinity And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 Thursday March 17 There are many ways that you can help our presbytery s Outdoors Ministry, and for the rest of the fall and winter there will be one day a month set aside for folks who enjoy getting out into nature and helping with hands-on projects. These will be supervised work days planned for individuals and/or small groups. Activities will range from trail blazing to painting, to carpentry projects, landscaping and gardening, and general maintenance. Whether you have a teen that needs to put in volunteer hours, a Sunday school class that loves to get out and do things together, or are an individual that just wants to support our ministry, please consider signing up for a day at Dogwood Acres. James Vance, DWA Ministry Team Chair will supervise on the following days. Please him at jvance49@comcast.net to let him know the kinds of things you feel comfortable helping with. He keeps a list of a variety of projects and will customize the day s work to fit your abilities.
