1 Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH July, 2018 FRIENDS OF THE ROAD, FRIENDS OF THE HEART. Our long-time dear friends from Covington, TN, Sam and Gwinn Stitt, and their son, Bennet, surprised Sandy and me at worship last Sunday while here in Pensacola on vacation. We d not seen them in years what a precious reunion! While reminiscing about our years at First Presbyterian Church Covington ( ) we shared with them joys of our Trinity family. You Girl Scouts used to sing, Make new friends, but keep the old; One is silver, the other is gold. Who are YOUR cherished friends who need a note or a phone call from you? Who might YOU bless with a surprise chat, update, , contact? Friends of the road connect because you travel the same road for a while, e.g., work place friends, classmates, college friends, church membership, community clubs and service organizations, etc. When the road ends, when you move, when you change jobs, many of those friendship end and are replaced with new friends. But friends of the heart are the people with whom you bond by sharing faith, sharing deep conversation, sharing grief or long periods of need, counseling one another, praying together, supporting one another, sharing deeply in service to family and community, etc. Friends of the heart are far fewer, but the bonds are so strong that you can move to new jobs or new towns, see each other infrequently, go months or years with talking, but you still connect, you still feel bonded. Part of church vitality hinges on helping acquaintances and friends of the road become friends of the heart; and helping people know Jesus as the ultimate friend of the heart. Cherish the folks in your life and help them to make church a vital part of their lives! Invite them to our church events and invite them into your heart, invite them into your life, invite them into faith in Jesus our Lord. YOUTH MUSICIANS HAVE BLESSED US IN WORSHIP. Thank you to the following Trinity Youth who have offered their musical gifts in worship, helping us to glorify God and to give God pleasure with the joy and beauty of our musical offerings. Thomas Prettyman joined Tom Mignerey in a violin duet of Pachelbel s Canon in D accompanied by Margie Sanders on piano. Mallory Lawrence (vocals) and Lindsey Lawrence (piano and vocals) joined Tasha Yount (guitar and vocals) in leading us in our opening hymn, Cornerstone, a contemporary arrangement of my Hope is Built on Nothing Less. I am so pleased to see our youth combining their talents with our adults in praising God with their musical talents.

2 Page 2 Trinity Tidings Notes from Brian Parents, Youth and Families: Last month I introduced a summer series that aims to help families initiate conversations about faith and the relationship we can have with God. I m drawing the content for these articles from the book Sticky Faith by Dr. Kara Powell and Dr. Chap Clark. For the authors, Sticky Faith has three important characteristics: Sticky Faith is both internal and external. What students think and believe should correspond to what students do. Sticky Faith involves the whole-person integration (22). Sticky Faith is both personal and communal. Students recognize their faith must be personal while at the same time recognizing they stand in a tradition that is far greater than them. Sticky Faith is both mature and maturing. Sticky Faith affirms that faith should develop into a greater level of maturity while also recognizing that students are in a process of development. Instilling a Sticky Faith in our students is a process we cannot do alone. No parent or youth leader alone can form a Sticky Faith in young people. It requires the entire church and most importantly the work of God. And a Sticky Faith will not emerge through a single practice or activity. It requires a robust and well-rounded experience that is shaped by parents, peers, pastoral staff and leaders, mentors, extended family, and whoever else has a vested interest in young peoples faith. Last month I focused on identity and how having a Christ-centered identity helps students navigate the confusion that often surrounds identity formation. This month I want to focus on the importance of faith conversations. The authors cite this statistic from the well-respected Search Institute, a research center devoted to helping families, schools, and kids make the world a better place for kids. According their nationwide study of 11,000 teenagers from 561 congregations across six denominations, 12 percent of youth have a regular dialogue with their mom on faith or life issues It s far lower for dads. One out of twenty kids, or 5 percent, has regular faith or life conversations with their dad (71). Research supports the claim that the more thorough and honest conversations parents and youth have about faith the greater faith those students will have as they mature. Where do you begin? The authors recommend several approaches, so I ll highlight those and pray that your family can begin or deepen your conversations about faith and our life as Christians. Learn to Listen and Ask Questions, Not Lecture. Create the Right Venue for Meaningful Conversation Don t Avoid Touchy Subjects. Television and Music Certainly Don t. Share Your Own Faith. Mistakes, Regrets, Joys. Develop Conversation Rituals. Grace & Peace, Brian

6 Page 6 Trinity Tidings GENEROSITY TEAM During July, we would like to highlight one of our newest Ministry Teams, the Generosity Team. You may have known the Generosity Team as the Stewardship Committee. Stewardship is based upon the principle that God created and owns everything and everyone. Psalm 24:1 tells us: The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it. We all are the stewards of God s gifts of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship does not focus on what I should do with my time, my talent and my treasure, but on what God wants me to do with His time, His talent and His treasure. Some have thought that stewardship may be too narrow and does not capture all the aspects of God s will. Generosity gives us an additional aspect to God s will. 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us: Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Cheerfulness and joy are two of the gifts that God blesses the generous giver with. 2 Corinthians 8:1-2 gave an excellent example of this blessing that come from the grace of God to the giver: We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. Generosity also describes one of the aspects of Christ. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9. Ona and Bobby Gilbert have been long time members of Trinity. Please listen to Ona reflect on God s calling to her. When I look back on the 43 years I have been a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church I can t help but wonder how different my life might have been had we chosen to attend another church. The reason I say this is the way God seemed to have had my life here all mapped out. There were so many church members and pastors who were there to mentor me and give me opportunities to grow in my faith and serve the Lord. These were people who believed in me and the mission of our church. They taught me that all things were possible for those who trust in the Lord. I wish that I could list them all but a few really stand out. Frank Johnson asked me to join the Service Outreach Committee. At the time I had two young boys and was very involved in their activities, it just wasn t the right time in my life. However, I could not say no to Frank. Frank was a man of strong faith and a passion for missions. I learned very quickly that anything was possible for Frank. Many times a need was brought before our committee when our funds were very low. Never do I remember having to turn down a need. Frank would say the money will come and money always did. Anne and Morgan Bunch are two people I give great credit to for never wavering in their beliefs, even when they may not have been on the same track as some other church members. Their strong convictions often gave me courage to speak out when otherwise I wouldn t have. Last but not least Rebekah Maul, our Associate Pastor and Service committee advisor, was a huge role model for me. As many of you know Rebekah was known to have an opportunity for everyone and she was another one you could not say no to. Nothing was impossible and she loved challenges more than anything. When some new idea or need was presented to our committee, she would just say yes we can do that- -- now---today, and she would put us to work. United Ministries is a prime example of that. God has truly blessed me and my family during our years here. I will be eternally grateful to all the church members and pastors who have inspired me along the way. ART IN THE LIBRARY: Sonny Ridlehoover, is the featured artist in the library. A talented photographer, Sonny has an interesting display for your enjoyment. 7 Page 7 Trinity Tidings Do you watch HGTV, that TV network of home and garden remodeling shows, creating new spaces out of old, reclaiming the rich beauty hidden within the structure, improving the effectiveness of spaces when needs have changed or outgrown spaces? The common factor of each renovation project is that it is completed in the minute airtime. Oh, should that be REALITY! If you have done remodeling or construction projects, you know that TIME is a fluid factor in moving toward a completed project. We are renovating and updating at Trinity. Working with Ministry Architects church consultants, our five-member Renovation Team has been contracting our Session teams and subcontracting team members to address identified needs and explore desired outcomes of our ministries and missions. Construction done well takes time and attention to details, and the beginning work doesn't show glamorous results immediately. We are in that phase now. The members of the Renovation Team, our pastors, and our staff have been meeting to assess, discover, design, and lay the foundation for building a strong mission for Trinity's congregation. They have reviewed policies and procedures, operational methods, and organizational structures. They and our Session Teams are now visioning what God has in mind for us. You will be invited to join the visioning in August. Unlike HGTV reality shows, our projects won t be completed in one episode. But stay tuned, changes are beginning to emerge, will soon be evident, and YOU may be that special craftsman needed to complete our work! On behalf of the Renovation Team, Eileen Mignerey RENOVATION TEAM REPORT TO SESSION 2 6/28/2018 IMPORTANT DATES Renovation Team Meeting with Ministry Architects 7/30 Vision Summit 8/27-29 Children s Summit November ACTIVE INITIATIVES RESPONSIBLE Website and Data Management Leah McCreary, Hugh Hamilton The Legacy Team has approved funding for the website and data management resources; a separate report will be presented this meeting. UPDATE MEMBERSHIP ROLLS Leah McCreary, W&D Team The protocol presented to the Session last meeting regarding non participating members is being executed by W&D; those appropriate for removal from the membership roll will be presented to the Session as appropriate. SURVEY OF CHILDREN S MINISTRY Eileen Mignerey, Brian Yount Children s Ministry survey has been collected and we are in the process of developing a master calendar that will highlight upcoming Children Ministry event events for Trinity. This will receive further exploration at the upcoming Children and Youth Summit in November, but our goal is to begin implementing changes now to meet the spiritual needs our children and families. We are approaching the fall as a trial run and will clarify our approach throughout the year. WORSHIP VISIONING SUMMIT Stephanie Peterson The Worship Visioning summit was held 6/18 with 20 members participating. There was a very supportive family feel in the meeting. A concern has been expressed that those preferring a more traditional worship experience were not well represented. A summary by Ministry Architects regarding nest steps is forthcoming. Hugh to decide if a Worship Development Team is needed. PRAYER TEAM Jack Lurton The Prayer Team has been formed and is active. SESSION TEAM RESTRUCTURING Hugh Hamilton, Jack Lurton Session Teams are requested to review their write-ups in the Trinity Operations Manual with recommendations for updating, and to prepare a comprehensive list of volunteers needed to execute their mission. This is needed prior to the August Vision Summit. A process for writing job descriptions for all volunteers is being developed. Hugh and Jack Lurton will visit Teams to help. FACILITIES USE POLICY Pat Patterson Interviews to define the issues with our policy are being conducted with the Facilities Team, staff, and those (we know) who have expressed concern over the policy. ANNUAL EVENTS CALENDAR Hugh Hamilton A draft calendar has been prepared to include all the major events for the next year. This is to be a moving calendar updated each month. We need at least two teachers in each class and would like to have teaching teams for each class. We also need substitutes. Please contact Steve Takeuchi, Laura Lawrence, Kathryn Hendrix or Patty Hightower if you can help. A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.
