1 TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings JULY,, 2016 A BUSY SUMMER PREPING FOR AN EXCITING FALL LINEUP! Our Youth and Christian Education Ministry Teams are busy laying ground work for new ventures in Sunday School and Youth Fellowships this fall. Both teams are showing intentionality and thoroughness in planning and I look for solid results in our endeavors to help increase in others their love of God and one another. TEAM-UP for Youth Ministry. Using an older but still effective Presbyterian resource for youth ministry TEAMING UP: Shared Leadership in Youth Ministry by Ginny Ward Holderness and Robert S. Hay, we are expanding and defining two teams of adult leaders for 1) Mid High Team and 2) Senior High Team. Five to ten adults on each team will work with youth on each team to develop leadership skills and to engage those youth in owning, planning, and helping present their activities this year. Leah Harrison is the Youth Team Coordinator, Daniel and Robin Akerman will head the Senior High Team and Clayton and Stephanie Connors will head the Mid-High Team. Both teams will develop a purposeful plan, balancing their plans to cover five areas: 1) Worship, 2) Study/ Exploration, 3) Ministry within Congregation, 4) Service to Community, and 5) Fellowship. We are forming the two teams in July and the adults will attend four leadership training sessions led by Hugh Hamilton and Leah Harrison in July and August. August we will host a weekend retreat for the adults and youth for fun and silliness, faith sharing, building personal relationships, practicing various leadership skills, planning the annual calendar, assigning responsibilities and scheduling who s in charge when. My hope is that this intentional approach will foster such abiding relationships between youth and adults at Trinity that we will fulfill the Apostle Paul s celebration in I Thessalonians 2:8, So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us (NRSV). Our Mid Highs and Senior Highs are enjoying a summer of connections as they hear Trinity members share their life journeys with our youth in Sunday School. Love and faith are caught as much as taught, so let the interaction and relationship building continue! CREATIVE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING TO ENRICH YOUR SOULS. Laura Lawrence, chair of the CE Team, and I have been reviewing curriculum for a our elementary, Mid- High and Senior High Sunday School classes for the fall and are recommending some creative, right-brain, methodology resources to tap into the Bible stories and our youth s own experiences and perceptions to help them create a big picture of the Bible and to see how God is writing his story in their own lives as well. We are focusing on curriculum that bolster s youths spiritual development and awareness of God in their own lives and which creatively fosters conversation with their peers, their parents, and their Sunday School teachers. Tapping into resources suggested by Jenny Chapman, Director of Christian Education and Presbytery of South Alabama s resource center director, we have discovered some great new resources to share with our Trinity Christian Education team. On the adult side of CE, we are enjoying Jack Lurton s teaching an exploration of Parables this summer and our 40/50/60 s class has rejuvenated! Come join us! 8:45AM Sundays in the Activity Center, room 10. Hugh s class and the Serendipity Class both had such a great experience with John Ortberg s book Soul Keeping, that Pat Patterson, Hugh Hamilton, and Bob Palmer are undertaking plans for a congregation-wide, six-session, small group exploration of Soul Keeping: Caring for the Most Important Part of You from January to March We will secure and train small group leaders in November to host growth groups in their homes beginning in January. We are also exploring group study resources that we may offer this Fall to which you may invite your friends and community.
2 Page 2 Trinity Tidings Dear Members of TPC, Thank you so much for your continued prayers on behalf of my son, David Paul. He is still with us- not a lot better but not worse. Sincerely, Marcella Smith (San Diego, CA.) Dear Reverend Hamilton, Thank you and Trinity Presbyterian Church for your faithful support of Loaves and Fishes Transitional Housing Program. It never goes unnoticed! Blessings, Micah Danielson THP Director For Trinity Tidings: When my ancient microwave gave up the ghost, three people came to my aid in getting me fixed up with a replacement: First, Kathy Franz scouted out the stores and found a clone of my old oven which had given me good service. Then Dave Blodgett unpacked it, set it up in working order and hefted the old one out to the garage for disposal. Finaly, Gary Davidson worked long and hard putting in a new electrical box needed for better performance. All told, I d say the three of them gave not only helping hands but helping hearts. Jeanne Franz Dear Dr. Hamilton, The Board of Directors of MANNA would like to personally thank you for your generous donation given on April 6, As you know, MANNA Food Pantries is a community supported grassroots organization. We rely on groups and individuals for the donation of food and money to run our agency. We sincerely appreciate your gift. And recognize that your decision to help us is a vote of confidence in our organization and our efforts to Dear Trinity Friends, Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers! My knee replacement surgery went well. I m not quite ready to go walking with Carol & Wendy, but I m limping along. Sincerely, Kay Andrews The words, "Thank You", seem so inadequate when I think of the ways my church family came forward and supported Haley and me after Annette's passing. The food you brought, and the flowers! Several of you housed out-ofstate relatives. There were contributions to Annette's favorite charities - and some directly to the family. And the many beautiful cards we received, many with touching, handwritten messages! And your presence! Several of you spent those last days with me at Annette's house when it was evident the end was near. So many of you came to her "Celebration of Life" where some of you provided special music requested by the family and Pastor Hugh Hamilton conducted a beautiful service. I'll never forget all you did, and I like to think that Annette was watching it all, wearing that big smile that we knew so well. Martha Hauck Good afternoon Pastor Hugh and VBS volunteers, I wanted to share some happy words and expression of thankfulness to you and Trinity regarding VBS this year. Avery is attending VBS for the first time and her response has been very heart warming. I talked with her about VBS in preparation for Monday morning and she was a bit nervous and did not know what to expect about this new thing called vacation bible school. I told her that some of my happiest childhood memories are from attending VBS every year at my hometown Presbyterian church in Alabama. When I departed her TLC class Monday morning she said she didn't want to go because she wasn't sure what it would be like so I assured her it would be wonderful. I arrived to pick her up in the evening from TLC and she ran up to me, twirled around with excitement and said "vacation bible school was AMAZING - I loved it!" She talked about it all night and showed us all the dance moves she had learned, described the setting, talked about the nice people she saw and told us all about the "belt of truth" and that she was going to get to be in the play! It was a joyful thing to see her excitement and know that she is learning more about God's love through fun activities that will further ignite her love of Jesus. Thank you for your creative work and for including Avery's class in VBS. We will miss TLC greatly when Avery departs for kindergarten in August. You are making an important impact on this little light of mine! Warmest wishes, Libbie ~ The Eddins Family Calling all SUMMER Campers: Dogwood Acres summer camps give our 1st-5th graders an opportunity to embark on many Dogwood Acres traditions including Bible studies, archery, Ga-Ga Ball, the land swing, swimming, campfires and lots more! It's really fun when all the Trinity kids can go at the same time, and the kids have such a great time.
