1 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAY 2016 ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH The Chimes Congratulations Jarris Hawkins will be confirmed on May 15, He is the son of Grover and Denise Hawkins, grandson of Doris Schneider, cousin of Destiny Vela and brother of Shailey and Kaston Hawkins. His confirmation verse is Isaiah 41:13. Cole Bourgeois and Kaitlin Huizinga are our High School graduates. Cole is the son of Jeff and Dawn Bourgeois, grandson of Sandy Lehne, nephew of Brian and Shawn Lehne, and brother of Lainey and Anna Grace Bourgeois. Kaitlin is the daughter of Todd and Natasha Huizinga and sister of Kendall Huizinga. Lucylle Kunze will celebrate her 96 th Birthday on May 3. Linvill and Connie Crenwelge will celebrate 45 years of marriage on May 15. Dennis and Betty Jo Schmidt will celebrate 45 years of marriage on May 30. 2 Council Voted to support the American Church in Berlin, Germany internship program. Voted to give Thrivent Choice Dollars as the offering for the Synod Assembly. Voted to support the National Day of Prayer event financially. Voted to allow 100% of Endowment Fund Earnings toward the Helen Weiss Scholarship Fund to continue (normally a new fund receives 100% earnings for 5 years). 3 May Special Concern Zion Women of the ELCA As a member of Zion, ALL WOMEN are part of our organization. Our purpose statement defines us As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. We gather monthly for Bible Study on the first Thursday of the month at 1:30pm in the Sewing Room. Other ways we serve are on Altar Guild, cheer visits to shut-ins, food for bereaved families at funerals, distribution of Altar Flowers, and Laborers of Love (making quilts and gathering kit materials for Lutheran World Relief and supporting special charitable projects.) 4 Zion WELCA News All women are invited to attend our monthly Bible Study and fellowship on Thursday, May 5 at 1:30pm in the Sewing Room. Our study is entitled MARY AND ELIZABETH...Sisters across the generations, and the text is from Luke 1: Please come join us...all are welcome! Enjoy the wonderful fellowship among sisters in Christ. Light refreshments will be served. Many thanks to the Laborers of Love and the many donations of school, and personal care kit supplies. When the items were counted and the boxes packed, it resulted in 58 quilts, 41 personal care kits, 73 school backpacks, 17 pounds of soap and 1 tied blanket shipped to Lutheran World Relief from our congregation. Our prayer is that the recipients of these gifts will know that there are people in far away places that care enough to share and send help to people in need. A few dates to remember: May 5 is National Day of Prayer. May 15 during the Sunday School hour, we will be honoring our confirmand, Jarris Hawkins and our two high school graduates: Cole Bourgeois and Kaitlin Huizinga. 5 Little Lamb News The Easter Egg Hunt was a great success! We had a strong family turnout from Zion Church members and Little Lamb parents. We think we had close to 100 kids, but it was impossible to get a good headcount since they all ran around as fast as possible picking up eggs and putting them in their baskets! Many thanks to everyone who helped that morning as well for all the donations of Easter eggs, candy, Library Note Have you stopped by the Library lately? If not, please come by anytime, any day and pick up a book, a magazine or newspaper and sit in one of the comfy chairs and enjoy some quiet time. It is a very comfortable space. You will find many books that are ready for someone to pick up, read and enjoy. Check out a book by simply writing your name, the title of the book and date on the sheet of paper located on top of one of the bookcases. ALL ARE WELCOME! and the wonderful food for lunch for all who came. A special thanks to Pastor Hartmann for the Easter message he gave to the children before we started the activities, and we especially thank the Lord for the nice weather that morning. Members of the Little Lambs Advisory Board attended a Noon Rotary Club meeting during April to listen to a report on the Rotary Literacy Program. In addition there was a discussion of our Early Head Start School Program. Last year the Rotary Club donated over $1,000 to our school, plus bookshelves to all our children s families, and gifts of books to the school. We expressed our thanks for their support of our school. Welcome Adriane Hoffman transferred her membership to Zion on April 24, 2016 from Holy Comforter Lutheran Church in Kingwood, Texas. Page 5
