1 The Chimes MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ZION LUTHERAN OCTOBER 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, in the coming weeks, our congregation will be involved in an exciting stewardship emphasis titled Empowered by Grace! By God s grace, we are given life, and that same grace that makes life possible empowers us to live fruitful and productive lives. Grace motivates us to be loving, serving, and giving people. Growing in an intimate relationship with Jesus through Word and Sacrament, we are transformed more and more into his likeness, sharing the Joy so we can Worship, Love and Serve. Under the banner of Empowered by Grace!, you are invited to join us in both worship and Bible studies. The weekly themes are: Oct 11: Empowered by Grace to Serve ; Oct 18: Empowered by Grace to Give ; Oct 25: Empowered by Grace to Do Your Best (Your Estimate of Giving Cards for 2016 will be turned in that day...wear red!). During these three weeks, we will learn how God wants to use us as channels of love, grace, and mercy. We become God's hands, feet, and mouth. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can be the faithful people he has called us to be. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy (1 Cor. 4:2). What God entrusts to us, God asks us to manage faithfully. God lovingly grants most of us families, friends, church, work, and material blessings, and, most important, the Gospel. We demonstrate our faithfulness and trustworthiness by sharing the Gospel with those near and far. Looking forward to seeing you in worship and Bible Study on Sundays! Empowered by Grace!

2 COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS Page 2 After reviewing Committee reports, planning for staff evaluations and finding Zion in a good cash position, the Council toured the campus to see all the physical property needs that are needed. The shed between the two rental properties will be "fixed up" to have a better appearance, and the rest of the needs were prioritized and will be brought to members of Zion via forums, and then voted on by the membership at a meeting, time to be determined. REFORMATION SUNDAY IS OCT 25! Please wear something red! I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. Psalm 69:30 LITTLE LAMBS NEWS Did you see the Little Lambs Float in the Gillespie County Fair Parade? The teachers and parents built and decorated the float and rode with some of the children in the parade. Great Fun! The Little Lambs teachers and parents set-up and managed a children play and entertainment area at the Lutheran Fall Festival. This effort was to help raise awareness of the school in the community, as well as fund raising for Cross Trails Ministry. Approximately 100 kids enjoyed the activities at the booth. They raised and donated $435 to Cross Trails Ministry. Special thanks to Donna Oehler and her volunteer students that helped. Center for New Communities has approved and will pay for a part time Handy-Man to help maintain the school playground and be on call for minor maintenance and repairs...

3 PASTORAL ACTS Dot Dittmar passed away September 5, 2015 at the age of 74. Her memorial service was held on September 18, 2015 in Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Hartmann officiating. Page 3 YARN NEEDED The Prayer Shawl Ministry team is in need of more yarn (any color), and would appreciate any contributions. A collection container is located on the WELCA table in the Atrium. 4 Special Concern The Fredericksburg Meals on Wheels (MOW) program serves over 100 meals five days a week to local shut-ins. A paid staff prepares the meals at the Golden Hub at 1009 North Lincoln, but relies solely on volunteers to deliver the meals to the homebound of the community. Sometimes the volunteer driver is the only person the client sees all day. Meals on Wheels is an important program in our community. It enables the elderly and disabled to achieve or maintain self-sufficiency. It prevents or reduces institutional care. It prevents or remedies neglect, abuse, or exploitation of adults who are unable to protect their own interests. And best of all, the recipients and volunteers feel wanted, needed, loved, valued and appreciated. Page 4 A small part of their funding comes from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. The remainder comes from donations from the clients and donors like you. Won t you please consider contributing to this worthwhile cause? Jim and Diane Mayer have been delivering Meals on Wheels for the last seven years. They have found being a volunteer for MOW a most rewarding experience. The clients are so grateful for the hot meals delivered to their home as well as the short visits with them. Drivers are always needed for MOW. If you might like to become a volunteer you can contact Diane Mayer, or the Golden Hub director, Denise Usener at Upbring (formerly Lutheran Social Services) Golf Tournament, benefitting New Life Children's Center, will be held on October 26. Todd Huizinga, Brett Beyer, Robert Menking and Pastor Hartmann are playing, and you can support them by writing a check to Zion and putting "Upbring Golf" in the memo line. 5 LOST & FOUND LOST and FOUND, Michael Bridges and George Baum, have been traveling around the world performing concerts for nearly 30 years. Their music is infused with their faith, Lutheran heritage, and gift as storytellers. This year is their final tour and part of that tour brings them to Marble Falls, Texas on November 1st. Their concerts are interactive and driven by the audience so each show is different-always spontaneous, improvi- sational, musical, and funny. Be sure and sign-up for the special dates you wish to give the altar flowers. KOINONIA AGAIN We are attempting to organize groups for Koinonia again. These groups will meet once a month for a meal at a restaurant or in a member s home by invitation. Each group will determine when and where. The goal is to meet regularly to strengthen our church family as we enjoy good food in pleasant company. An important part of these meetings is to get to know each other better.
