1 Chimes The MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH JUNE 2016 HELPING SOME OF OUR OWN Kayla Leigh Reitenga is the 25 year old daughter of Douglas and Nerissa Reitenga. The Reitengas are members of Zion who normally worship at the 10:30am service. Kayla moved to Fredericksburg in December of 2015 to accept employment at Paws and Claws Pet Resort. On February 15, 2016 after feeling sick for a few days and having unexplained bruising all over her body for over two weeks, she was diagnosed with Leukemia and taken to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio where she has been for most of the last 3 1/2 months. The type of leukemia she has is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with the Philadelphia Gene. The good news is that after almost 3 1/2 months she is finally in remission. She is going to have a bone marrow transplant this summer and her sister Briana Reitenga will be the donor. After the transplant, Kayla, Nerissa and Doug will have to live in San Antonio for three months as Kayla has to be no more than 35 minutes from the hospital after the transplant. On June 11, 2016, there will be a fundraiser for Kayla at the California Pizza Kitchen in San Antonio. 20% of every check with a flyer or who mentions Kayla, will be donated to the Reitenga s. Kayla's grandmother, Emma Jane nee Klaerner grew up at Zion. Jane's brother is the late Homer Klaerner. You may also wish to help the Reitengas directly. The tax code does not allow for deductions that are given through Zion to a specific person. Thank you for your consideration in this difficult time.

2 ZION WELCA NEWS Please join us for Bible Study at 1:30pm Thursday, June 2. The lesson is entitled "Treasure in clay jars." In this study we will deal with love, forgiveness and reconciliation in light of the fact that we are earthen vessels or Clay Jars. Scripture references are 1 John 4: 7-21 and Romans 7: Carolyn Smith will lead us in the study and Emma Stotz will be the hostess. Come join us! CROSS TRAILS The Chapel Dedication & Picnic Sat, May 28, 10am 2pm at Ebert Ranch Camp (752 Ebert Lane, Harper) Arrive at 10am for social time & activities. The dedication service will begin at 11am with a picnic lunch to follow. RSVP by May 25 to Please call the church office if you would like a ride. LITTLE LAMBS GARAGE SALE The Little Lambs Parents are going to have a garage sale at the church as a fund raiser for several improvements planned for their outdoor playground. The garage sale will be in the Church Fellowship Hall on Saturday, June 11 from 8am until 3pm. We will receive any item donations for the garage sale after noon on Friday, June 10. 3 SPECIAL CONCERN The Special Concern for the month of June is the Gillespie Literacy Council. We are urged by God s Word to love the foreigners and sojourners who live among us and to treat them as we would treat our brothers and sisters. Sharing our language by teaching someone to read, speak or write English is a priceless gift that opens many doors for them. The Literacy Council strives to increase literacy in Fredericksburg by offering classes in Basic Literacy, ESL, and Citizenship Preparation. Twelve week sessions are held every Tuesday from 9-10:30am and 6:30-8pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall. This past year approximately 56 students in the fall and 47 during the spring who came from Mexico, Honduras, Peru, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Lithuania, Guatemala, Russia, China and Poland registered for classes. The Literacy Council relies on funding from community churches, civic groups, and individuals. Want to make a difference in someone s life? Accept this invitation to share in this community ministry.
