1 The Clarion Volume 23, Issue 6, June 2018 A Monthly Publication PIMIL Sunday is June 3rd! On Sunday, June 3 rd, Christ Church will celebrate Partners in Ministry in Liberia (PIMIL) Sunday. Mother Abeoseh (Abby) Flemister will preach at both worship services, and will share updates on the important work of PIMIL amongst Ebola orphans and students in need in her home country of Liberia. She will be available to answer any questions during coffee hour, and our loose offering for the day will support PIMIL S ministries! Christ Church currently sponsors two students at one of the Episcopal elementary schools in Liberia. On PIMIL Sunday, Mother Abby will share information about PIMIL's recent six-person mission trip to Liberia, and give us a preview of PIMIL's 9th annual International Luncheon & Silent Auction event coming up on Saturday, July 21st in Columbus. If you'd like to learn more in advance of Mother Abby's visit to Christ Church, please visit PIMIL's website at and/or the Liberian Episcopal Community in the United States at
2 June 2018 The Clarion Page 2 The Clarion Volume 23, Issue 6 is the independently edited, local monthly newsletter of Christ Episcopal Church, 409 East High Street, Springfield, OH, and published by Christ Episcopal Church upon authority of its Rector. Office: 937/ Christ Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southern Ohio Bishop: The Rt. Rev. Thomas E Breidenthal Priest: The Rev. Maggie Leidheiser- Stoddard Deacon: The Rev. Rick Incorvati Senior Warden: Dawn Ivy Junior Warden: John Richardson Music Director: Dr. Christopher Durrenberger Parish Administrator/Program Coordinator: Kelly Zeller Facility Manager: Paul McAfee Bookkeeper: Gayle Culler Clarion Editor: Joyce Spangler Dear wonderful people of Christ Church, Summer is upon us, and what a blessing it is, after such a long winter! I'm feeling joyful for many reasons Mother Abby Flemister's visit for "PIMIL Sunday" on June 3rd, upcoming fun events for children and youth here at Christ Church, serving as a chaplain at Procter Camp later this month, the Faces of our Faith summer formation group starting up -- but most all, I'm joyful because as of June 1st, my family and I are officially residents of Springfield! I've been commuting from the east side of Columbus since I joined you as your priest in late January, and now I no longer have to drive 50 minutes twice each workday or get up at 5:45 on Sunday mornings. But that's not the main reason I'm excited about our move. I'm excited because now I can be completely "at home" not only in this parish but also in the wider community. This feels like an important step in solidifying a new chapter in our lives and a still-somewhat-new ministry partnership. I give thanks to God for a place to call home and for a flock of God's people to love, serve, and shepherd as best I can. I look forward to walking through my first summer in Springfield with all of you! Blessings & love, Rev. Maggie L-S :) {RevMaggieLS@gmail.com}
3 June 2018 The Clarion Page 3 Worship Offering meaningful, relevant, and welcoming worship in the Episcopal tradition for people of all ages. The Altar Guild has made arrangement for gluten free wafers. Since some visitors need to avoid cross-contamination with the wheat wafers, the gluten-free wafers are being kept in a separate container. Let Rev. Maggie know if you need one when she approaches you with the wafers. Thank you to the Altar Guild for this generous act of hospitality. Activity Bags for Children Quiet activity bags, books, and coloring sheets are on a cart in the sanctuary. We know that children are excellent multitaskers, and in fact often absorb more of the liturgy when their hands are busy. So, they are welcome to choose an activity bag to use during the service. Please return it to the cart after the service. Thank you! During busy summer months ahead, please remember to check the ministry schedules. If you are unable to serve, please find a sub and Kelly at zellerk0611@gmail.com. It takes all ministers working together to coordinate our worship each Sunday! Thanks! 4 June 2018 The Clarion Page 4 Most Sundays at the 10 o clock service, prayers for healing are available to the right of the lectern. Any and all worshippers are welcome to come to the station either before or after receiving Holy Communion. If no one is present, remain after worship and Rev. Maggie will pray with you. If you desire prayer for any reason, simply state your concern. You will be anointed with Holy Oil and the Trinitarian blessing followed by prayer. You will receive a card during the week with the message that you will continue to be remembered in prayer. Currently, it is my honor and privilege to offer this blessed ministry. I am a retired social worker and former ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). I have attended Christ Episcopal Church since In 2005, the Holy Spirit called me to become a Registered Nurse. I welcome your questions and prayer requests anytime. Blessings, Myra Dean Banion (937) The next Taize service will be held at St. Raphael s Church on June 24 th at 5 PM. Taize is a quiet, peaceful service of readings, songs, prayers, and candlelight. The name Taize comes from an ecumenical religious community in France. After WWII, young adults from all over Europe flocked to it, looking for healing and reconciliation. To help these people of many different languages worship together, the monks of Taize wrote simple, beautiful, moving chants, which are easily learned. Taize continues to be a pilgrimage destination for young people now from all over the world and their simple, quiet worship is held all over the world, as well. 6 June 2018 The Clarion Page 6 Outreach helping to provide the physical, material, social, and spiritual needs in Springfield and beyond. Kroger Community Rewards Program Christ Church participates in the Kroger Community Rewards program. We receive a rebate quarterly based on purchases tied to Kroger Plus Cards enrolled in the program. These rebates are used to support our outreach. If you have questions, or do not have a Kroger Plus Card, call the office. These rebates are used to support our outreach. The Next Pantry Day is June 20 th from 11 2! Thank you to those who helped with May s Food Pantry. We gave out chicken, pork, turkey, beef stew, chili, eggs, pizza, fresh produce, and the extras of soap, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Pantry volunteers come from Covenant Presbyterian Church, Christ Episcopal Church, and other faith communities. Volunteers help pick up, unload, and, pack food and help with customer service. Contact either Ann Chitkara at ann@nova.pcc.com or Anne Randolph at annejrand@aol.com to volunteer. Toilet Paper Reminder Our pantry is one of the few to give out toilet paper. While most of us take T.P. for granted, this necessity cannot be purchased with the SNAP card. A donation of a package of toilet paper helps support this amazing ministry! Donations can be put in (or near) the basket outside the elevator on the upper level of the church. Amazon Orders Support the Food Pantry! You can help raise funds for our Food Pantry. The Amazon Smile program allows us to earn 0.05% on all purchases originating from our web site. Here are two ways to do it: (1) Go to Scroll down to Quick Links. Click on Amazon Smile Program. As you shop, you can see the amount you are earning for the Pantry. (2) Go to Amazon.com, and in the search bar enter Amazon Smiles, then enter Christ Episcopal Church Springfield Ohio as your charity of choice. Supporting the Food Pantry could not be simpler! Keep saving those pennies! The pennies collected help support the Warder Literacy Center. Once the pennies total $25, a check is sent to the center to help support literacy in Clark County. What an easy way to help someone learn to read! If you have any questions please contact Dodi Holmes at Lay Weeders Christ Church is looking for volunteers to weed the grounds and flowerbeds throughout the year. If you re interested please contact the Jr. Warden, John Richardson at richardsonjohnd@gmail.com. Thank you!

Rick Incorvati Senior Warden: Dawn Ivy Junior Warden: John Richardson Treasurer: Ken Bladh Vestry at Large: Ann Chitkara Marilyn Howat Chris Oldstone-Moore Kathleen Schubert Brian Shelburne Chris Wells Don Wheeler Youth Representative: Emily Hasecke Interfaith Hospitality Network Every 7 8 weeks, teams of Christ Church parishioners provide two evening meals at IHN. Our next opportunity to serve the guests is Sunday, June 10 th and Saturday, June 16 th. What is IHN? IHN is a vital ministry in Springfield that provides housing, meals, and employment assistance to homeless individuals and families. For many years, clients lived in churches and moved from church to church each week. Now, clients live at Norm s Place and no longer have to change locations each week. IHN is not simply a shelter where people without a home can stay. IHN is a program that helps the clients find affordable housing, learn the skills they need to live independently, and find employment. How does Christ Church help? Monetary support is provided through our outreach budget. Parishioners participate in IHN fundraisers throughout the year. Parishioners donate household goods that are used to help people get set up in their new homes. Parishioners provide the evening meal every 7 8 weeks on Sunday and Saturday night. How can you help? Form a team of 2 or 3 people and sign up for a meal. Plan a simple menu that is enjoyable by people of all ages. Cook! Deliver the meal to IHN on the assigned evening. It s that easy! Lori Swafford is our IHN coordinator. Contact her at lori.swafford67@gmail.com with questions.
