2 August 2015 The Clarion Page 2 The Clarion Volume 20, Issue 8 is the independently edited, local monthly newsletter of Christ Episcopal Church, 409 East High Street, Springfield, OH, and published by Christ Episcopal Church upon authority of its Rector. Office: 937/ Fax: 937/ Christ Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southern Ohio!!! Bishop: The Rt Rev Thomas E Breidenthal Rector: The Rev Charlotte Collins Reed Deacon: The Rev Otto Anderson Organist: Dr. Christopher Durrenberger Summer Parish Administrator: Andi Logee Parish Life Coordinator: Rachel Stridsberg Facility Manager: Paul McAfee Bookkeeper: Gayle Culler Clarion Editor: Joyce Spangler Because the Clarion is posted online, we no longer list phone numbers or addresses for individuals. Dear Friends, On Christmas in July, we happened to have a number of visitors at both services. None of the visitors came because we were celebrating Christmas. We just happened to have a number of visitors that week. So, I had some explaining to do. We celebrate Christmas in July because the Christ Child comes among us when we least expect Him, not just when we have room on the calendar. We celebrate Christmas in July to remind us of our call to seek and serve Christ in all people. And we celebrate this special feast day because, as followers of the Word made Flesh, we are called make a gospel difference in this world. We gather to hear the Christmas story and sing the Christmas hymns, then we go into the world with cookies and socks and underwear to be the church in the world. As many of you know, Don and I spent two weeks in Salt Lake City at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church earlier this summer. At General Convention, the entire Episcopal Church gathers to figure out how the Church as a whole can best seek and serve Christ in all people and make a gospel difference in the world. The exhibit hall was filled with information and goods that support a variety of ministries around the world. Our legislative action was at times tedious to the point of mind numbing, but the focus was always on how we are called to be the church in the world. The focus of much of the preaching we heard was on how to be the church out in the changing world. At General Convention, the Church was gathered and the Church was sent. At Christ Church, we gather to be nourished and strengthened by worship, fellowship, and study. But then we are sent out into the world to be the church. Sometimes we have to go no further than our parking lot, where folks are gathered for the Food Pantry or the Neighborhood Fair. Sometimes we go to IHN or Rainbow Table, or to City Hall for Flash Compline. And sometimes, we go no further than our next conversation with a friend or stranger. In Salt Lake City, I had a number of great conversations out on the street with people who wondered who we are and what we were doing. To be the church, we are called to both gather and to go. One without the other is not the church. May we be a church that is faithful to the call to both gather and go! Faithfully, Charlotte

7 August 2015 The Clarion Project Women We are so grateful that the Outreach Ministry Team of Christ Episcopal Church has chosen to donate $250 to Project Women. Your gift will allow us to provide necessary services including emergency shelter and advocacy services for those who are seeking safety from domestic and intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Your generous support will help make an immediate difference in the lives of survivors in our community. Episcopal Community Services Foundation Please accept our sincere thanks for your wonderful gifts of $500 to the Episcopal Community Services Foundation. This year more than 40 churches had applied to ECSF for a total of $176,000 in grants for 44 ministries. At a time when an increasing proportion of Ohio families are struggling to make ends meet, your contribution will combine with the love and skill of hundreds of Episcopal volunteers, skilled staff and partner ministries to reach more than 100,000 Ohioans in need in the coming year. It will aid pantries in delivering hundreds of thousands of meals; keep families safe and together while working with them to overcome the problems that made them homeless; give hope for a better future for our children at risk by providing tutoring and homework help; and so much more. We cannot thank you enough for your support. Page 7 Dear People of Christ Church, Question: What should one do when people keep DOING THINGS to make her grateful? Answer (I think): KEEP THANKING THEM! So: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your warmth, support, generosity, enthusiasm, and encouragement as I have moved from lay participation to lay ministry to discernment to postulancy & candidacy and now the diaconate. The Eucharistic visitor kit is a precious gift, so very useful, but also a symbol of how we try to include all. It resounds so deeply for me, and, as I said, with experiences of being a Lay Eucharistic Visitor to Alzheimer s patients who have lost so much but who still reach for the cup. Thank you also for the generous check. I am savoring its potential. I haven t decided where to put it yet perhaps oil stock (a small thing to wear on my hand to leave oil for anointing)? a combo BCP/hymnal? Whatever I use the money on, I will cherish the gift and feel your support as I use it in my ministry. Which brings me to Answer #2 to my question. Q: What do I do with the fact that you keep supporting me & making me grateful? A: Take it forward into the world. What I ve learned in seminary and through the support I ve felt is that I need to take what I have been given beyond. I ve also learned that doing so means stepping out with uncertainty into a rather murky situation and world, and that doing so is contingent not just on training, but on community, support, love, and encouragement. I love that as we all move out into our world and ministries, we will carry each other in our hearts. Please know that I carry you in mine. Love, Jennifer Oldstone-Moore
8 August 2015 The Clarion Page 8 Outreachhelping to provide the physical, material, social, and spiritual needs in Springfield and beyond Kroger Community Rewards Program Christ Church receives a quarterly rebate based on purchases tied to Kroger Plus Cards enrolled in the program. If you have questions, or do not have a Kroger Plus Card, please call the church office. Christ Church has received a total of $ so far in These rebates are used to support our outreach Amazon Orders Support the Food Pantry!!! Here s an easy way to help raise funds for our Food Pantry! The Amazon Associates program allows Christ Church to earn 4% on all purchases originating from our web site. Go to and scroll down to the Amazon box. Select a category, enter a search term such as "toaster" or a book or movie title and then click the Go! button. After your search results are displayed, shop around for the best deal on the products you need and make your purchase. Christ Church received $ so far in PANTRY NEWS Thank you to all who have helped with this endeavor. July s food pantry was able to serve 142 families, representing 457 individuals! Anyone interested in helping with this mission is welcome. Help is needed from volunteers with loading or unloading food, donating toilet paper, bagging groceries, breaking down boxes, computer entry when interviewing clients, and snack serving. In August help is needed on August 12 picking up and unloading the first order of food and also on August 19, distribution day. Watch service bulletin for details. All prayers and support are appreciated. Toilet Paper Reminder!! Ours is one of the few food pantries to give out TP with the groceries. While toilet paper is something most of us take for granted, this necessity cannot be purchased with the SNAP card (AKA food stamps). A donation of a package of toilet paper is a great contribution to this amazing ministry, so we have changed from having a food- of- the- month to asking for donations of toilet paper every month. Donations can be put in (or near) the basket outside the elevator on the upper level of the church. Empties4Cash accepts empty cartridges, and reimburses Christ Church. If you have an empty printer cartridge, seal it in a zip-lip bag and place it in one of the baskets outside of each entrance to the sanctuary or bring it to the church office. So far in 2015 we have received $49.45 in rebates, which are used to support our outreach. Call the church office with questions.
