F I R S T R E A D I N G Micah 6:1-8 Hear what the L says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the L, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the L has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 4 S E C O N D R E A D I N G 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. 9 Taking Faith Home CARING CONVERSATIONS Discuss in your home or small group: Tell about a me when you felt foolish or weak. Have you ever experienced God at work in your weaknesses or failings? Explain your answer. Read 1 Corinthians 1:28. This tells us that God uses what the world thinks is worthless, useless, and nothing at all to show God s power and save us. How do these words challenge you in your daily way of life? How is it a blessing that God s ways are not our ways? RITUALS AND TRADITIONS When we bless another person we are calling on God to show God s goodness and kindness to them, as well as demonstra ng our own care and concern. There are three basic elements to a personal blessing God s name, words, and touch (e.g., a hand on a shoulder, or making the sign of the cross on the forehead or palm). Blessings can be used at meal mes, bed mes, and at farewells (e.g., when a child goes to school or someone leaves on a trip). Use this week s A Blessing to Give with others. You can also use a telephone call or other form of social media to offer a blessing. A BLESSINGB TO GIVE May God bless you with a thirst for what is pure, right, and good. May the Lord make your life a blessing to others. This is an initiative of Madisonarea Urban Ministry (MUM), an interfaith social justice organization with a long history Tickets on Sale Feb. 5 Luncheon and Program will be Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30. Bring your dolls, daughters, sons and grandchildren for a whimsical gathering filled with doll stories, displays, favors and projects to make-and-take. Members of Messiah s musical family will entertain with Valentine s music and song. Lunch will include delicious salads, deviled eggs, homemade rolls, assorted bars, chocolate & white milk, coffee. The bakery effort provides 16 weeks of classroom and kitchen training. Students learn food safety, baker s math and job readiness. Proceeds from sales go back into the program.
